Linux: Any recommendations?

Now that I have a new main machine, I am left with an extra desktop with which I do whatever I want. It currently is running Vista, but I was thinking it might be kinda fun to install Linux on it and try to make it talk to my existing home network, or set it up as it's own server and use my other laptop as a client...just for the experience of doing so. I realize there's no real practical purpose to it other than for fun. I have another machine that is living as my SQL Server (mostly for SourceGear Vault) and Web Server (internal only) to which I used to test deploy apps (not been doing that much lately).

Only trouble is I don't know enough about the various flavours of Linux to know which one would best suit my needs. I was hoping someone might have some suggestions on what would work well. If it talks to the rest of my network, it will have to support my wireless card (probably not possible) and if it sits as server in a disconnected network with my laptop, the client would most likely be Windows (although I could install Linux on the laptop, also).

Any thoughts?
