Just got home from seeing Sweeny Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Normally, I don't do musicals. I don't care much for them as a general rule. However, there are a couple I do like. I always liked "Guys and Dolls" (the movie version...thought Brando rocked), and a couple others. Add this one to the list.
It was gory, but mostly in a classical way...not so much about what you see as what you don't see. Lots of blood, lots of suggestion, but not as bad as it certainly could be given the source material. Definitely not one for children or the faint of heart, though.
Depp was great, but he usually is. He even did his singing parts well. Helena Bonham Carter was fine, as she usually is but not amazing (Maryanne will likely argue with me on that).
However, the most surprising comment of the evening came from Sheri. She mentions that Cohen's "equipment" was a little big. She mentioned his "big part", and at first, I thought she meant his role, but she meant his "roll". Apparently, this was a "stunt package".
Worth watching.
The movie, I mean.
