Pan's Labrynth: not a fairy tale for kids.

I went to see Pan's Labrynth over the weekend with my fiance' and our friend, Maryanne. It was directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Blade II, Mimic, Hellboy).  To tell you the truth, I was intrigued, but I didn't expect much...given that I was decidedly unimpressed with some of his other work ("The Devil's Backbone" comes to mind). It isn't bad work, but nothing that made me say "wow".

Yer probably waiting for me to say I was blown away, one way or the other.

My honest opinion, however is this: it's not too bad. Pretty good, in fact. I enjoyed the film, but I doubt I'll ever see it again. I have a system I use for rating movies, most likely not unlike yours. Basically, the scale runs: I'll buy it, I'll rent it again sometime, was good to watch and won't rent, not really good, and crap. This movie, to me, falls squarely in the "was good to watch and won't rent" range.

The special and makeup effects for the faun were very good, to be honest. I thought he was visually interesting and compelling...possibly the best part of the film for me.

Some of the scenes are remarkably shocking, but not really gory. The whole film does have the fractured fairy tale feel to it, or perhaps something Brothers Grimm might have written.

It is NOT a file for kids. Seriously. If you take your child to see it, you will most likely be explaining somse stuff...and might end up dealing with some bad dreams. Some of the things that happen are a little rough, and rough in that believable "real life" way that some movies manage. The fantasy parts are only slightly as disturbing as the real life elements....oy.

The version we saw was sub-titled, but you know, I prefer it that way. You don't get the natural inflection when you see dubbed movies. But be warned, if you dislike sub-titles, this isn't the film for you.

It is some rough stuff, indeed, more so because I wasn't expecting it. And, I had root canal the next day. Not a good pre-dental-surgery choice.

As I left the theater, I decided I didn't like the film. But over the next few days (and post-surgery!), I relented. Parts of it are very hard to watch and I'm not sure I agree with the movie's ultimate message. But, while it's disturbing, it is thought-provoking. It has a brutal beauty and haunting characters, including the unforgettable Mercedes.

I think Theo's rating is dead-on. I'm glad I saw it, but I don't particularly want see it again.

Excellent point; had forgotten to mention Mercedes. An admirable character to be sure. Also thought "brutal beauty" was most apropos; that was precisely the term for which I was reaching. :-)

Sorry to hear about the dental work. Hope you're feeling better now.

I saw this movie last night and was blown away. The juxtaposition of the real life horror with the fairy tale was genius, the scenes were textured and rich, the story and characters haunting. I may not see it again, but I doubt I'll ever forget it.

The movie is a masterpiece, and if you dont understand it or properly appreciate it, perhaps you should watch it again when you are in your 30s or 40s or when u have learned enough about life on this planet to see it for what it really is!

Ok, no problem, I'll wait....oh, I forgot, I'm 38. So apparently, age has nothing to do with it. I am sure I see it for what it is, or at least what it appears to be me (which is the point, right?). It is a good movie, overall, and I think indicated that. I am not a huge Del Toro fan, and I am not required to be to appreciate the movie in some ways, and not in others. I am a Kurosawa and a Kubrick fan, but I don't always like their movies either. Chances are there are movies of theirs you wouldn't like every aspect of anymore than I liked every aspect of Labrynth. It doesn't speak to someone's ignorance or inexperience if someone doesn't like a particular movie as much as you do. It's terribly short-sighted to write off someone's opinion merely because you disagree with it. Perhaps you'll undertand that "when you are in your 30s or 40s or when u have learned enough about life on this planet to see it for what it really is!".
