Norton Prtoducts: Internet Security 2007

Ok, I have been a loyal Norton fan for a loooooong time. I remember using Norton Desktop on my Winders 3 installation and thinking it was amazing. I've many fond memories of how it enabled me to modify and improve my user experience (UX). However, I just don't think I want to use their products anymore.

I hear you asking why, and I am glad you are. Here's the why and also the wherefore. Never one to ignore a chance to speak, as many will tell you. I've add some severe issues with the last couple of installs (nothing too bad), I don't like the pricing structure (they want way too much, IMO), and most recently, the install/uninstall from the latest version of Internet Security has managed to break both my laptop and my fiance's computer. This is not good. I have spent hours attempting to resolve the issue with the laptop, but I can't seem to figure it out. I found orphaned services and all kinds of mess all over the place. Very unhappy with what was reported to be (by the software) a successful uninstall. I am sick of it, so I am going to hit the issue with a big hammer and reinstall the whole OS.

Really a pity, too, given my great history with the brand name.

I can relate man - I remember in my early days of how powerful some of those Norton utilities were for my computer (in fact I still have Norton Utilities on 5.25in floppy!), but I abandoned them after Norton GoBack broke one of my laptops and I started having bad experiences with most other Norton products that were simply up against better competitor products (i.e., Acronis versus Ghost, IMHO)

I used to love Symantec / Norton products, but, I too was bitten badly by Norton GoBack and their Virus scanner.

GoBack promising to restore the disk structure actually corrupts it - but I presume, not on all machines. I only had two machines a laptop and desktop. I put it on a new laptop as a just in case added protection as I was to be travelling. Everything was fine and it allowed me to recover a few times. The problem occurred when GoBack was upgraded. Part of the upgrade apparently deletes previous GoBack data as it is in the wrong format for the new GoBack to recognise.

After reboot disaster as it had become unbootable. Alas the Goback data was obliterated. It was the last thing I needed and I lost ALL my data.
The Norton Virus scanner is fine until the annual license is due at which point Norton adds up to 20 seconds to any file access presumably to instil fear into the dumb user that he is infected and that he should re-subscribe immediately. Fortunately an uninstall of the virus scanner returns Windows to its normal slow speed. Installing the free AVG virus scanner seems to work seamlessly.

Wow, I am sorry to hear that GoBack did you so wrong. It's unfortunate when you depend on a piece of software to protect you from data loss and instead that software itself causes it. Yeah, I am totally done with Norton, I think. :-(
