I've been reviewing the features and such for Vista, and compared versions via this link. I also compared prices for the versions on various sites, and here's my thought: Why?
I've seen it, and it looks great. No doubt of it. Has some nice bundled features, but ones easily replaced by my current tools. I keep searching for a single, compelling reason to shell out the cash at the moment. I can't find one. I mean, the gadets rock, but it is worth an upgrade? Hardly, in my opinion. We also noticed that apparently the home versions will not support a Remote Desktop option, which means we can't use it to VPN (short of some other means). BTW, if anyone has any suggestions on this, I'd love to know what they are.
I suppose I'll wait until I buy a new 'puter to get it, but I'd also read that the OEM prices on the OS were double what they were for XP. Many of the manufacturers are intending to pass the price on to we consumers (as I would expect them to do). Many will continue to offer OEM versions of XP as a result. Dell, as I recall, being one of those.
I'd also read that MS didn't expect the upgrade fever that XP introduced, which explains the low key fanfare for this release. Seems to me that they also recognize that the offerings are not as compelling as versions past.
Now, understand: I am fan of MS products, and I don't ask to be facetious, critical, or sarcastic. I am literally asking the community, who has seen it quite a bit more than I have, for some opinions. Believe me, I am interested in any new OS MS produces; I just need a little help being as excited as I normally am.
EDIT: It appears that the home version will let you Remote Desktop out of it, but allow contact in. So, this is still a viable option for use as a remote workstation from home.
