Ok, ok....I am an idiot. Everyone has said so, but now I know for sure. I installed the SQL Server Standard 2005 on my machine with no problems, and this was right along side the SQLEXPRESS version that installs with VS 2005. However, I had no client tools! No SQL Server Management Studio! Where was it? Well, some of you are undoubtably laughing already: the client tool install is separate. I am such a goof sometimes....oy.
