Off topic post: New Santana CD copy protected

Ok, ok...I know this isn't I normally post on, but I was pretty annoyed and thought I should mention it. I recently purchased the new Santana CD, "All That I Am". I've been a fan of him for a long time, and I like the new stuff he's been doing the last few years. Anyway, the new CD gets home, is opened, and Poof! The CD loads the copy protection at the instant the CD is read, as most of the copy-protected CDs do. I figured wasn't any real big deal, seeing as I am the owner of the CD and this is my machine. Well, the copy protection, upon research, installs drivers on your machine, and then uses techniques similar to those employed by viruses to hide the drivers. It will allow you to make 3 copies of the CD, but you can't play them on just any player. It won't play on portables (or so the CD says). Some analysts warn that some of the changes made by the drivers/software on the CD *may* make your machine more vulnerable to viruses in the future. Great. I'll be doing some research into this over the next few weeks.... Don't get me wrong: I've no problem with a company protecting it's intellectual property. I really don't. However, the issue is that I use an MP3 player at work. It will not let me copy the tracks to my player! It won't even work with iPod, the most popular MP3 player on the planet (not my favourite, but more on that some other time). What is also at issue is that I have purchase the right to use the music; my "fair use" is violated by this most recent copy protection scheme. BTW, this is not MediaMax 3 like was is use on the Velvet Revolver CD. That one could be defeated, not that I did it of course. No, this one is new. MediaMax 5, I think it is. I will not buy any CD with copy protection on it again, if it can be helped. Period.

Here's some detail on the issue: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html

Apparently, Sony is now offering information on how to remove the software, but only on a per-request basis. The request must also be made from the machine in question, which suggests to me more activity that they aren't telling you about. I am just about fed up with this whole process. I'll post the link on how to remove the software shortly.

Have you actually researched what you are talking about? The Sony Cd that 'Sysinternals' is talking about is proteced by a company called First 4 Internet. Have you noticed it is installing the same or similar drivers?

You are correct! The version on the Santana CD is not the Sony protection. I did some more digging last night, and realized the reports I read were in error. Sorry for the confusion, and thank you for asking to keep me honest. See my retraction post.

WOW! Thanks for the info list! We need to get the info out, wot? As my next post says, I confirmed that the Santana doesn't have this protection. However, Sony DRM protection is an abomination. I am not going to support any CD with this on it, period.

I, too, bought this Santana disc and unknowingly loaded this crap onto my pc. I contacted Sony and went through all of the hoops to remove it, only to find out it sunncomm is responsible for this DRM. The website`s FAQ claims they cannot remove it:

"Is there a way to remove your software from my computer?"

"Please note that MediaMax was designed to manage and safeguard the copyrights of specified artists' CDs while giving you an enhanced visual and listening experience. It does not interfere with or impact any of the normal operations and/or functions of your computer."

"Is there a way to remove the DRM files?"

"Please note that because the keys are very essential in controlling access to protected music, Windows Media doesn't allow anyone to have access to them directly. They are located in a license store file that is handled exclusively by Windows Media Player, in accordance with the way your Windows system is configured. Since those keys are very small and literally do nothing other than help the user play content that would otherwise be inaccessible, Microsoft never envisioned that anyone would have a desire to remove them. As a result, we do not have a way to tell the Windows Media Player to remove a particular key."

I had the same experiance. I wanted to copy to my mp3 player.
Sony answered me to use the software on the CD to rip it first to secured wma. Then burn an audio CD using media player. Then you can rip the audio CD.
I tried to make the first step. Only 128 kbps was supported and the quality was so bad that I did not continue to make an audio CD out of those files.

I talked with a salesman at the Barnes&Noble Music dept. last night.
He tells me that a Santana CD was recalled and replaced a while back (few months?), because "something was messed up". Looks like this has been going on for a while now.

You can bypass this the same way you bypass the MediaMax V3. Once the MediaMax software loads go into control panel-system-hardware-device manager. Select in the view menu Devices By Connection and also select Show Hidden Devices. Find the SbcpHid device, double click and go into the Driver Tab and set the Startup to disabled, restart your computer and open up Microsoft Media Player or what ever software you use to rip and rip away. Works fine....

I don't see the file "SbcpHid" in device manager but I know it installed mediamax though, so how do I get rid of it?

Sony is at it again even after loosing a legal battle over this type crap. No matter how this turns out I will never buy anything by Sony or the companys Sony owns ever again. I'm sick of their arrogance. I will also spread the word as much as I can.
