Agreed in more ways then one. Years ago I purchased and Apple computer that was quickly obsoleted when the next rev rolled out. Apples response was "Buy the new rev"! Like I have that kind of money. the point is that Apple could not care less about it's customers. I install quicktime only as long as I absolutely have to and then take it off. No apple products, period!

QuickTime isn't intrusive. However, you may not know how to control it with regards to your other media platforms. If you don't know how to use a computer, move to the Galapagos for an extended stay away from civilization.

Dr. Parallax, you must be a Mac user or work for Apple. Quicktime IS intrusive. It adds itself to the startup so you have that crappy qttask running even when you tell it not to, it hijacks all the media associations even when you tell it not to, and doesn't put them back after you uninstall it. It's slow, it pops up 'purchase pro version now' all the time, and generally is crap in every conceivable way.

We at Apple spend considerable efforts to ensure that the software we engineer provides the best user experience that we can possibly deliver.
At times it might appear that the interface is more intrusive than you had maybe expected, however during our labs testing it has been proved beyond resonable doubt that this largely derives from the incredibly positive profile Apple has generated with it's customers worldwide, which ensures that when our software is accessed the user is always aware and grateful it is an Apple product, and one that they can rely on.
Of course we constantly strive to deliver a consistent user experience and we have determined through our lab testing that the best way to achieve this consistency is to raise the profile of Quicktime on the users computers, we have found that if we ensure Quicktime always starts with the computer the awareness of Quicktime is enhanced, even when the customer doesn't intend to watch any video content during their session, and installing icons on the desktop and quick launch toolbars go further toward maintaining Apples profile and reputation for quality software.
A positive by-product of our lab tests is the discovery that where we help the user by restricting their choice for alternative products and limit the users ability to 'accidentally' disable Quicktime the profitability of Apple is encouraged, especially where we enhance the user experience by providing additional functionality within Quicktime, but by not charging them for those facilities until they require them we are expanding the customers choice.
Additional capabilities like adding the superb iTunes facilities within the install package by default, only enhances the user experience further and continues to protect Apples long term viability and its capability of delivering similar excellent software well into the future.
I hope this goes some way to allay readers concerns and allow the prodigal consumer to return to the one true Apple.

If what you say is true, then if i use msconfig and remove it from startup, then the application should only exist on my system if i have it installed and personaly executes the program.
But no, the damn thing keeps getting up in the taskbar taking resources i ONLY would want to give if its absolute necessary.
And that is as someone said earlier when there is no other format to show a movie in.

I belive apple pay big money to make companies discard other players to make quictime the only possibility.

Steve Jobs, if that's really you up above, bite me. Your QT insists on playing my audio files directly in Internet Explorer and takes forever to load them, which is stupid because there's no option to disable that lame feature, if you could call it one. The solution I've found is simple: uninstall the intrusive QT, and never worry myself with Mac-for-PC products again.

I hate it because it is intrusive, it has no function that other programs cannot perform better, and it looks ugly. No program has ever given me as much trouble. And this has been for as long as I've owned a pc. Every time it rears it's face, I curse and damn the sons of dogs who created it. And if their is any justice in the beyond, then every apple employee with burn in hell for having promoted either 'apple' or its lousy rotten products.

I only use Quicktime because it is the format that my digital cameras use. Otherwise, I'd never install it on my system. I hate the buy pro nag screen, the inability to view full screen and the super annoying qttask TSR that always wants to be running. Why is it that so many software companies feel that the only reason you have a computer is to run their product, and so it should use as much system resources as possible at all times?

The only thing worse than Quicktime, is Realplayer.

The #1 reason i absolutely REFUSE to buy an ipod or or apple computers is the fact that they produce quicktime. By producing one absolutly HORRIBLE program for so long, the seems to only get worse with each edition, makes me lose all trust for anything apple does. Atleast microsoft allows you the choice to use 50 other programs. It provides you with media player by default for convenience, and i love it. I rather get rammed in the ass by bill gates than steve job's massive black quicktime dick ANYDAY. I will never give apple a cent until they eliminate ALL the negative issues with quicktime and apologize for the YEARS of frustration they have caused to millions of people worldwide.

Quicktime is the most useless piece of shit software I have ever seen, if you happen to "UPGRADE" to a different, decimal point version, you end up paying another 40 bucks for a new license. At least windows is free to upgrade!!!! Also, what is the deal with playing .AVI files with it, it takes a high-def .avi file, and makes it look like it was filmed by a 4 year old with a web cam. Lastly, and this is for anyone who does major movie editing with AVID Studio Express Pro, or Adobe Premiere Pro (any version), or any other Non-Linear Editing Software. It requires you to have the latest version of Quicktime, and then it takes FOREVER for it to export, and when it is done, it is either the wrong file type, size, or it looks like plain old S#&%!!!!

"We at Apple spend considerable efforts to ensure that the software we engineer provides the best user experience that we can possibly deliver."

@your engineers:

SMIL - fail@hardward abstraction, l2deinstantiate your fricken memory, l2 cross project unit test. SOME hardware will deconstruct it's memory through the HAL, others wont... perhaps spending more than 10 minutes to comprehende the HAL library (i.e. openGL, DirectX) will prove to mean your software is actually working. Better still, get some software engineers who actually code, or alternatively, should finance be the problem, get some management who don't want to run their tongues over the pretty boxes and actually want to invest in sound product performance. Somewhere you are just plain failing.

SOCKETS - fail@application layer problem mitigation. IF I GET ANOTHER "INVALID URL" from basic TCP transport problems i'm going to scream.

better still.... i might just go with flash.

I think the reason Quicktime is so great is because you can play .MOV files with it. Those files are great and waaaaay better than MPEG or AVI. Why even have other formats. MOV all the way!!!!

# re: People hate quicktime

I have to agree 100% with dude. The Quicktime® .MOV format is not only an industry standard but it also represents Apple's® commitment to excellence and quality which Apple® customers expect.

Without the Quicktime® .MOV format then many of the latest innovations in the internet media would simply not be possible. Without Apple's® continuous push for innovation and user-friendly interfaces then services such as YouTube® and streaming multi-media would simply not exist. If it weren't for Apple's® Quicktime® format even the latest DVD and Blueray® discs would not be possible. As a matter of fact, with Apple's® Quicktime® there would be no T.V. at all.

The facts speak for themselves and without Apple's® Quicktime® the internet would not be what it is today.

I'm absolutely sure it is inhibiting sales from your other brands as well, "Steve" - I Tunes specifically- Why don't you make it a better product if you are going to ramrod our players with it? What the HELL is with that ridiculous player size anyways? I didn't buy a 20" monitor so I can look at your penny pinched 3" screen. I install quicktime for about 5 minutes just to hear the itunes songs I've downloaded, then I delete it. I don't even want to use itunes anymore because of your stupid quicktime player. Quick time is the worst media player around & the fact that we are forced to install it with Itunes & other programmes is just so annoying. It then forces you to reboot you computer.

Apple. I did not ask for Quicktime & certainly had no reason to reboot my machine. I really hate the way you do business. Itunes is also terrible but again, if you own an ipod this software is forced upon you by apple,

Now they are restricting people from plugging their ipods into any machine other than the one it was origionally syncronized with. Stop trying to control peoples lives with your shit, intrusive software. Stick the hardware and OS/X and leave PC users alone.

Microsoft offers a choice as they know how to make software and are confident that people will choose their software above other alturnatives. Apple are aware that nobody in their right mind would choose Quicktime or Itunes given the choice so they force it upon us.

Stop it before it drives us all mad.

QuickTime is maybe not as bad as people think. The main reason people don't like it is because if you're used to WMV, when you switch over to QT you can't find anything. But actually, all the same functions are there - and when you figure out how it works, you end up with a better interface than WMV.

but, coming from me Steve, that was some pansy ass political BS you came out with up above: "it may appear intrusive... but this is because of the incredibly positive profile Apple has achieved with its customers"??!? how does an incredibly positive profile result in your customers thinking your software sucks?

quicktime is one of the single worst programs ever made, and always has been. It has always been a crap - it is slow, freezes/crashes, and the mov-format has horrible quality/size ratio? Why do people still use it? Why anybody would even use this format is beyond me, since the entire format sucks as much as the rest of quicktime.

If I could grab Steve Nutjob but his nuts, cut his throat, then smash his head against a Mac G5 enough times to see his brains leak out, I certainly would. I'm so mad at this moment that I'm pretty sure I really would cause a massacre if I see him, or any other Mac faggot for that matter.

I don't know why the fuck Microsoft hasn't made a .mov extension support yet. This made me yet again install quicktime (should've been appropriately named waitingtime...or in my case, CRASHTIME). Now each time I want to download an MP3, mov, or any media file from the internet, instead of downloading it, it tries to open it with quicktime, then the whole damn thing crashes.

A company that can't make an application as simple as a MEDIA PLAYER work is not worth two shits, and is definitely not worth buying anything from.

NEVER, EVER, WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A MAC. PERIOD.

# re: People hate quicktime cause its a PIECE OF SHIT MONEY HUNGRY PROGRAM!

Ive experienced the crap that is called quicktime since the days of apple IIsi's and i must say it hasnt changed a bit. Resource hogging and way too slow. And now facebook keeps haunting me saying i have to install the bloody plugin! FUCK THAT.

TO THE DEVELOPERS OF QUICKTIME....eat my choad.

One would think that a huge company thats trying to get a better foothold in the pc world would try to give you software that is clean and simple to use and listen to the complaints and do something about it. Its like the Quicktime developers think we will just agree to any bullshit they dish out. The "pay for full screen" thing is an absolute moneyhungry joke. When i have to, i use a cracked pro quicktime because NOBODY should pay for full screen capabilities when you are forced to use their software. Then i discovered an alternate to quicktime without the bullshit and plays in vlc and media player and classic.

So for all out there that needs a QT alternative download the latest K-lite MEGA codec pack from

http://www.codecguide.com/
(plays REAL MEDIA, QUICKTIME and other bullshit no strings and installs all the codecs u could dream of and doesnt burden u with bad software. Infact I use MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC for everything and it works brilliantly. Its simple and to the point. VLC is awesome too)

Only download the KLITE pack from there as it has no spyware or adware or whatever. AND U CAN USE FULLSCREEN and it uses less resources.

So whoever reads this give it a go. I also typed in "quicktime sucks balls" and came to this site. Google is gettin bad now too with 50 million programs at startup.....Actually ADOBE,QUICKTIME,GOOGLEUPDATER,INCD,NEROCHECK etc....I fix pc's for a livin and im forever disabling those programs. how do you know what they are relaying to their servers???
