8GB RAM in laptop…mmmm
Since my Dell D610 is three years old, I decided it was time for a new lappy. I finally decided on a E6400 from Dell. Finally a machine that can actually run Vista. Here is my score: So far I love it. I can have VS 2008 plus a couple virtual machines open and it doesn’t even blink. Technorati Tags: Dell,E6400...

VSTestHost.exe has stopped working
I keep getting this error in Visual Studio 2008 on Vista: I'm not sure what the issue is, but if you get this error, just stop the VSPerfMon.exe process and you can continue testing without rebooting your computer. Technorati tags: .NET, Unit Testing, VSTestHost, VSPerfMon...

A request to anybody who is bored on a Friday afternoon
If there is anybody who has some spare time and wants to build some killer TFS tools, I have some ideas for you. I would love a Vista gadget with a search box that searches all work items from a predetermined Team Project. This gadget should also have a button that allows me to create a predetermined work item in a predetermined Team Project with a predetermined iteration path. I would also love a script that would merge my dev branch into my main branch, check in the changes (overriding any policy...

Help installing CF 2.0 SP1 on my device
I'm having trouble installing .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 on my PPC6700. I want to play with the new version of NavXS, but when I try to download the framework from here, the installer tells me: Any ideas on how to load the framework on my PPC? I haven't been able to find a cab file anywhere. Is it a Vista thing? Technorati tags: NavXS, Compact Framework, Vista...

Vista New Email shortcut
Typing mailto: in the search box in the Vista start menu will open a new mail message in Outlook. It is much faster for me to hit the Win key on my keyboard and type mailto: than it is for me to hunt through the 15 open applications, find Outlook and click "New". Plus I don't have to transition between my mouse and keyboard. It's really not a new Vista thing since you could have typed WinKey + R, then mailto: before, but it's still cool. .NET MonthCalendar control on Vista
The MonthCalendar control is wider on Vista for some reason. The control is 227 pixels wide instead of 182 pixels on XP. If you have a form that only hosts this control, use this code to make it look better in Vista: private void FormDateSelector_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (Environment.OSVersion.Vers... == 6) { this.Width = 227; } } Technorati tags: .NET, Vista, MonthCalendar...

C# .NET code to load MapInfo
This code will load the MapInfo.Application object into a listbox and display the sample US County data. It assumes your form has a listbox called listBox1 and a "using System.Reflection;". It also works in Vista! string mapName = "C:\\Program Files\\MapInfo\\Professiona... Full Trust ClickOnce and Vista UAC
Clarification - The specific program I am working with here has the word "updater" in the name. This flags the UAC that it needs admin rights. Full Trust ClickOnce plays nicely with UAC otherwise. I've been battling all day with how one of our ClickOnce applications works with the UAC in Vista. I've found two ways to get past the "Cannot Start Application" message: Run IE as an administrator The first way is very painful and not useful for a repeatable process, but it works. Assume your ClickOnce...

I'm ready, where's the boost?
I picked up a SanDisk 4gb usb key this weekend hoping to take advantage of the Vista ReadyBoost feature. I plugged it in, selected ReadyBoost and waited for greatness. I'm still waiting, it doesn't seem to be speeding up my system, but I haven't really been pushing it too hard either. Tom Archer has a great post about ReadyBoost, but I didn't see an answer to "at what performance level does ReadyBoost make a noticeable difference?" Migrating to Active Directory Part 2 - DNS what?
I added my main workstation to our new Active Directory domain last night with out a hitch. This morning, I added my Vista laptop and ran into a bit of a problem. So I added a DNS role to the server and was able to add the laptop to the domain. Then we started in on Kyle's laptop. When attempting to log on, we got "The system cannot log you on now because the domain engraph is not available". After much googling, I discovered that the DNS role was incorrectly set up. I thought that just removing...

New Vista short cut keys
Rolvin Pagunsan talks about some new Win key combinations. My favorites are Win-Space (show sidebar) and Win-Number to launch applications in your quick launch toolbar. Changing your hosts file in Vista
By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator and open the file. 1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories 2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator" 3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt 4) Click File -> Open 5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Driver... 6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text...

Working from home
The roads are disgusting today, so I am working from home. It's nice to get laundry done and have Cold Pizza on in the background, but I miss my monitors. I've been with EnGraph for 3.5 years now. The last nine months we've had an office. For a year, we worked out of Kyle's basement, and the rest of the time, I was working from home. I love having an actual office. Mostly because it provides a needed separation between personal and professional life. I found that I had a hard time shutting down when...

All about UAC
UAC (User Account Control) is the new security model for Vista. Basically, it tries to run everything with the least expected permissions, even if you are running as an admin. Based on file type, file name and other parameters, it tries to figure out what permissions the application is going to need. If it thinks the application will need extended permissions, it will ask to continue (if you are an admin) and attach administrative permissions to the application. Daniel Moth has posted a collection...

Publishing ClickOnce error on Vista
Brian Noyes talks about an error that I am going to get when publishing a ClickOnce app from a machine running Vista. When logged in to Vista as an admin, you still won't have full admin rights when running Visual Studio. The short answer is right click on devenv.exe, select properties, select compatibility tab and check "Run this program as an administrator". He goes into more details on the User Access Control (UAC) and when it is appropriate to run with full admin rights. Technorati tags: Brian...

Thanks for the beta, Vista
I've been running Vista beta 2 on my laptop for the last 3 weeks. It's pretty good, but it's still buggy enough that I have a hard time being productive on it. I'm putting XP pro back on this afternoon. I'm really looking forward to the Windows Mobile Center and I like the new network connections interface and that it found our Xbox when we plugged it into the network. It ran pretty snappy on my laptop (2gb, centrino) and I look forward to the Release to Market version
