What I am playing

What I am Reading

Recently I was writing a mail to a friend of mine, who wanted to know how I customized Firefox to give me the same features as MYIE2 (which I used to love). So I thougth I'd share the content with you as well.

Actually there is nothing much to it, all you got to know is the proper extension to install.

My current list to duplicate most of MYIE2 (now known as Maxthon) functionality is

Other configurations that were needed

· to load images like in IE set browser.display.show_image_placeholders to false in about:config

The other big thing for me was to be able to do searches from the address bar. In MyIE2 (Maxthon) this was extremely customizable. You could setup wild cards to submit search strings typed in an address bar to a search engine. In FireFox the means of achieve this is through bookmarks. Each search engine you require to submit a string typed in the address bar needs to be saved as a bookmark with a keyword defined like so - http://devedge.netscape.com/viewsource/2002/bookmarks/

In addition to this, to send every other string to the google search page and not the ‘I am feeling lucky’ page the following change is needed

in about:config change browser.search.defaulturl to http://www.google.com/search?q=

You could also use the key config extension to bind CTRL+N to New Tab instead of new New Window.

And you could speed up firefox by making these changes.

What is still missing for me is

  1. An extension that would give you a button to close all tabs
  2. Have Blank Last Tab work in 1.0
  3. An Extension or hack that will let me do google search for strings with colons and dots in them. For instance at the moment I cant say google vs.net or google xsl:copy it gives me an error
  4. Have a better popup blocker. The FireFox popup blocker is good, but not as good as the one in MyIE2 (Maxthon)
  5. Have adblock preloaded with all the ads to block
  6. Have an extension that would provide translation services like WordLingo, BabelFish, and configurable options
  7. Still looking for an extension that will let me save open windows as a group and load/manage these groups

Well that does look like quite a few gaps that need filling. If any of you can provide insights post feedback on this blog.

Other than that the fact is you can achieve most of the MYIE2 functionality from Firefox and its extensions. So if you ask me what the chaps at Mysoft should do, right now I’d say pre-packaging and extension building. Why I say this is, because It took me quite some time and quite a bit of hunting around to setup all these extensions. The chaps at Mysoft could release pre-loaded versions of FireFox (call it MyFox or Foxthon or whaterver), with a few additional extensions to fill the gaps, and from what I've seen Maxthon is loosing ground to FireFox anyways.

*The extensions below used to be on the above list but lately I have found new extentions to replace them

I use the firefox search box (to the right of the address box) for searches. It opens a google page instead of using the 'feeling lucky' result like the address box does.

As for the xsl:copy search hack, put quotes around the term and the search will work: "xsl:copy"

Some habbits are hard to break, and for me its the searching from address bar feature. In fact I am pretty stubborn about it. I want that address bar to search google, and do it propperly too.

Thanks for the info about the quotes, typing google "xsl:copy" now works but its still not the same as just typing xsl:copy in the address bar.

I couldn't stomach using Internet Explorer for another second. I really gave it all I had - using MyIE2/Maxthon for the past 6 months, but I just can't take another minute of it. I'm addicted to tabs, but Maxthon is...

One that totally skipped me.
Tab Broser extensions http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_tabextensions.html.en

That should complte the list of Myie2 functionality. TBE gives you most of the stuff left out, like closing all tabs, and popup blocking too

>Have an extension that would provide translation services like WordLingo, BabelFish, and configurable options

Several exist in fact.

Translate page - Translate via menu
Translate - Translate via toolbar button or context menu
All-in-one mouse gesture - translate via Mouse gesture
Best of all is Conquery, you can change it to work with any language translater you want.

how do i configure firefox such that F2 and F3 switches between tabs insteald of CTRL-TAB and CTRL-SHIFT-TAB? thanks

Is it just me, or is TBE with firefox SLOOOOOW?

With MyIE2, I can have 15+ tabs open, and and my system works fine. With TBE, I have any more than 3-5, and firefox just crawls...

Anyone else have this problem?

Slow as in pages are loading or just that the UI is not snappy.
Having used MyIE2 I find the UI of Firefox seriously slow i.e. its not as snappy as MyIE2

Both really...

You can actually take care of the page load speeds by making these changes

Yeah, those changes are really helpful.

About the GUI non-snappy, I agree. It does feel quite a bit clunky.

Overall, I love it, I just wish the maxthon people would make maxthon for Firefox.

Heck, Id probably even pay for it :)

So what's the point of switching form Maxthon to Firefox, and then spending X hours to configure Firefox to work exactly like Maxthon?

# re: Firefox as MyIE2 12/14/2004 2:48 PM Tariq
Exactly.
90% of the time Maxthon would be good, but then there are those sites that make use of exploits within IE to hijack your browser. I also hate those sites that try to force you to agree to install an ActiveX component when you visit them. Guess my primary point is Security.

In addition to this I find that Firefox renders pages much faster than IE or Maxthon.

The feature that I can't find in Firefox is 'Best Favorites', ie only display a few selected favorites in the sidebar. Anyone know how to do it?

I've spent a couple of hours trying to make Firefox behave just like Maxthon (MyIE2), but there is one key feature that I haven't been able to find in any extension: URL Keys - assign URLs to the function keys (F1-F12). If anyone knows any extension that has such a feature, please let me know.

Ctrl+N show open "NEW TAB" instead of NEW WINDOW l.. How to achieve this ?

# re: Firefox as MyIE2 3/2/2005 5:27 PM Tariq
Use KeyConfig

I don't even know why you are even comparing firefox to MyIE2.

I outranks firefox by miles. myie2 runs 10 times faster than firefox at not just opening pages by on loading times.

Firefox is seriously sluggish.
Alos firefox does not render a lot of pages correctly and also the java applets on some pages don't even work and i have to go back to ie. what is the point then????

Forefox sucks compared to myie2

and before you say anything yes i have correct java installed.

firefox does indeed rule. but the point of me using maxthon is the tabs and ie engine. i'm sick of sites looking rubbish in firefox and good in firefox. other than that i wouldn't maxthon. i even make maxthon look and behave like firefox!!

# re: Firefox as MyIE2 8/5/2005 4:38 PM sparkyf1

rubbish in firefox and good in ie
