I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window. If you have missed while creating ...
Today I started a new open-source project, based upon my CommonData project.

So what have I done so far.
  • I have created a project on Codeplex.
  • I have created some documentation at http://commoneventlog.codeplex.com/
  • I have made a VS2010 version of my existing application MAKELOG
  • Uploadloaded the utility MakeLog in its VS2010 form
  • Published the project.
So far Visual Studio is fine. The only things missing are:
  • StyleCop does not recognise the current Resharper 7 EAP build
  • Need the updated GhostDoc Pro

I have migrated one of my VS2010 projects to VS 11 Beta and no problems.

It is highly significant that a Go-Live licence is now available for Visual Studio 11 beta. The key sentence is "Visual Studio 11 Beta and .NET Framework 4.5 Beta meet our high standards for pre-release software, so we support application design, development, test, and deployment in test and production environments.".Full details of the Go-Live at http://www.microsoft.com/vi... is still on-going with VS11. I intend to install VS11 on my development PC. ...
A while back I was helping a client upgrade SharePoint 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 and I came across this interesting problem. I was working web parts that were created in Visual Studio 2008 using WSPBuilder extensions. The first order of business was to convert them to Visual Studio 2010 templates instead of using WSPBuilder 2010 extensions. Why Use Visual Studio 2010 templates? There are two main reasons I highly recommend using Visual Studio 2010 templates instead of using WSPBuilder 2010 templates. ...
If you're like me and are using MVVMLight to build Windows Phone apps, you probably want to unit test your ViewModels as well. One of the benefits of the MVVM pattern is the separation of concerns between the View (page holding the xaml layout and bindings) and the ViewModel which holds the data to be bound. This allows the ViewModel to be easily testable, or so they say. In the end, it is quite difficult to find some useable tutorial doing exactly that. To the point you might ask yourself : " do ...

Whenever I do use Visual Studio and try to compile something under 64 bit I run into problems. It seems that most MS Devs for Visual Studio and the relevant tool chain are still mainly writing 32 bit applications. Here are some of the latest issues I did run into. COM applications targeting x64 are still using x32 as target platform for the MIDL compiler by default Resolution: You have to select in the UI MIDL – Target Environment X64 by yourself. Alternatively you can edit the vcxproj file directly ...
(DISCLAIMER: Yes there are lots of more elegant ISO software beside the free Microsoft one I’m about to show. But free is free and it has been tested and works for me for making advance bootable USB drives. That is another story. Look up Windows 8 Developer Preview for that one on BING.) For those of use that work with new technology all the time we accumulate a lot of ISO files and have to burn them to CD/DVD’s quite often. But we now have machines without burner in the corporate environment. We ...

I was listening to .NET Rocks episode #713 and it got me thinking about a number of SharePoint related topics. I have been working with SharePoint since the 2001 product came out and have watched it evolve over the years. Today SharePoint is one of the most powerful and flexible products in the market. Of course that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement (a lot of improvement in fact) and with much power comes much responsibility. My main gripe these days is that you have to develop on a ...
I recently have had the humbling experience of pair programming with several developers where I was just astounded at the speed at which they were able to get code generated. One thing I noticed is that most of their coding was done with the keyboard with very little use of the mouse – everything was shortcut based. When it was my turn to take over the wheel I found myself extremely slow compared to them, partly because I was not familiar with their keyboard and layout, but the majority of the slowness ...
With TechEd Africa starting in two days time I thought I would briefly blog about two useful extensions I use for VS2010 when presenting. They are Presentation Zoom by Chris Granger ZoomEditorMargin by Benjamin Gopp The Presentation Zoom extension creates a global zoom level so that if you zoom a single window, all editor instances will be updated to that zoom level. Before I had this extension I had a few circumstances where I was not aware of the resolution restrictions of the projector until 5 ...

The recently ratified C++11 language specification provides a range of cool new features. Many of which have been part of other programming languages for some time now. One such new feature that I value a lot is the concept of lambdas. Lambdas are great in many ways. They enable you to create callbacks that are called for specific items, for instance, or you can implement events with them, as is the case in this blog post. The following is an example of an event implemented in C++11 using lambdas. ...

In the previous post I droned on about how to apply the AsyncOperationService to an API conforming to the .NET Asynchronous pattern. In this post I’ll be building a more real world example. Well I say “real world” please don’t confuse that with something actually useful. Its still a little contrived and is not an example of best practice but it is something you could actually build and test. What are we going to build? We are going to build an ambitious ground breaking Silverlight app that allows ...
Introduction You might have noticed that the Silverlight 5 (Release Candidate) is out. One of the new features included in the RC is the ability to call P/Invoke. In this short demo, we will write a Silverlight 5 application that uses the feature. Tools needed: Visual Studio 2010 SP1 or Visual Web Developer Express 2010 SP1 is required to develop a Silverlight 5 RC Application. After you have installed VS2010 SP1 or Visual Web Developer Express 2010 SP1, then you will need to download and install ...
Well, quite a lot actually. The fact that the official agenda is completely empty (they're not even telling us who is doing the keynote ontheir website) leaves us with wondering what will happen. Of course, this means that people are getting more and more anxious to see what is going on and the blogosphere is filled with rumors. Which ones will be true is something we'll learn next week. I expect we'll get a lot of information about Jupiter. The new development platform is something that interests ...
Today the release candidate of Microsoft’s Silverlight 5 was released to the public. If you want to know “What’s new in Silverlight 5” then check out this page on Silverlight.net and continue reading the article below. Getting Started First, we are going to need to download the required tools to install the Silverlight 5 RC. Before getting started, please note that you can install the Silverlight 5 RC on top of the final release of Silverlight 4. If you have the Silverlight 5 Beta installed, then ...
First I found this blog post – which worked but only after some tinkering. There is a comment there that describes a better (simpler) solution, IMO. Step 1: Create the following macro, which simply toggles (twice) the existing TrackActivityinSolutionExpl... command – this is the same command that happens if you turn on solution explorer tracking in Visual Studio options, except here we’re turning it on and then immediately off: Public Sub SelectCurrentItemInSolution... DTE.ExecuteCommand("View.Tr... ...
So, you grabbed the latest Mango Build and installed it on your phone. Now your probably thinking, Why should I update to the latest Mango Beta 2 Refresh? Well, I will give you two good reasons. New Screen Shot Tool built into the Emulator Marketplace Test Kit Screen Shot Tool You may be thinking, there are a hundred ways to take a screen shot. I personally used SnagIt, but this involved a lot of steps. Load up SnagIt. Make sure my Emulator was visible. Click the “Capture Button” in SnagIt. Resize ...

This morning I got the information that the Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio 2010 - August 2011 Upgrade had been released. The version of this new upgrade is 1.4.40727.1601 with the Windows Azure SDK v1.4.20407.2049. This upgrade includes some awesome features that I was looking forward for a long time, which are: Profiling the application running in Windows Azure. New ASP.NET MVC 3 web role template. Multi-configuration files in one cloud project. More validation in the service package and ...
Inicamos… La gente ...
Introduction The official Kinect SDK has been out for a while now and I haven’t seen many people actually doing “how-to” post to get others started developing for it. I decided that I would help kick-start the movement by creating a series called, “Kinecting the Dots”. This is going to be a series of blog posts covering questions or concerns that I’ve seen in the community. I am planning on answering questions so if you have one that you want answered then please contact me by using the form above. ...
I’ve been playing with the Kinect SDK Beta for the past few days and have noticed a few projects on CodePlex worth checking out. I decided to blog about them to help spread awareness. If you want to learn more about Kinect SDK then you check out my”Busy Developer’s Guide to the Kinect SDK Beta”. Let’s get started: KinectContrib is a set of VS2010 Templates that will help you get started building a Kinect project very quickly. Once you have it installed you will have the option to select the following ...
I wanted to get familiar with SharePoint 2010 because I have noticed how the market is starting to demand it. Also, most of the SharePoint 2010 guides on the net are outdated. They show everything from registry hacks/editing xml files to installing hot fixes/service packs. My guide uses the latest bits as of 6/7/11 to create a SharePoint 2010 server inside of an Virtual Machine. This will be more than enough to begin creating Silverlight Web Parts inside of SharePoint 2010. NOTE: I did not want to ...
DISCLAIMER: I did not get this product for free. I’m just a guy with a debit card that has bought a product and wants to share. Last December, I decided to make the switch from using a desktop to a laptop as my primary development machine. I blogged about the experience with a post called “Searching for the Perfect Developer’s Laptop”. Fast forward almost 6 months later and the machine is still holding up great, just one problem: HEAT. It seems strange to hear about heat problems as this is usually ...
You’re a busy developer and you have read article after article of “What’s new in WP7 Mango” but you are only interested in knowing “What does this mean for me as a developer ?”. This is where I step in and give you the “need to know” with a quick blog post. What is it? The Beta to Windows Phone 7.1 Developer Tools named ("Mango") was released on May 24th, 2011. This means you can download the bits right now, but as far as having Mango on your phone you are going to have to wait. Let’s hit the bullet ...
Next years TechEd will be in Orlando, with registration starting around 24th. Planning on going, but do wonder how it will go. This year have not gone to as many 400 level events, nor has there been as many 'famous' speakers. Perhaps they are holding off till PDC - got to make this years one, missed last year due to being too busy. The content has been good, with some talk of VS vNext - which I want now. One of the main focuses seems to be on simplifying the developer experience. They will have a ...
At TechEd this year, there's only a few sessions and expo booths aimed squarely at devs rather than sysadmins and DBAs, but one of the things I picked up on was what's going into Visual Studio vNext. There's no shiny new UI features (that they've announced so far...) but they are doing a whole lot of work improving the performance and memory usage of VS - parallel builds (already supported in core MSBuild, just not used in VS up to now), and spinning off a separate process to do each build. This ...

I have been busy refactoring a legacy application where there are numerous blocks of code that are identical. To make the code more readable I wrote a sub function that performed the block of code and then I wanted Visual Studio to parse may file and replace any occurrence of that block of code with a new string. Originally I got stuck as it seemed VS2010 only allowed a single line replace, however after a bit of searching I found out that thankfully it does support multiline replace, it is just ...

I recently did some training for a client and one of the topics that came up was upgrading existing 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 Projects. I just wanted to share some of the issues that came up and the discussion that might be usefull to others. If you developed customizations for SharePoint 2007 you either Visual Studio 2005/2008 VSeWSS 1.1/1.2/1.3 or you used WSPBuilder. A lot of fellow SharePoint MVP's and experienced SharePoint Developers used WSPBuilder. I personally prefered it over the VSeWSS ...

Introducing the concept of “first class branches” is a significant improvement as part of the 2010 release with respect to version control. Not only does it help to distinguish between folders and branches, but it enables branch visualizations. Let us see improvements in detail. · In TFS2008, you don’t know which of the folders are Branches: All folders looks the same, all have the folder icon. Now, In TFS 2010 there is a new icon that shows which of the folder is a Branch. · There is no visual means ...

As a post VS2010 SP1 installation activity, I am recompiling all my open source projects. The first is XHTMLFIX at http://xhtmlfix.codeplex.com/ This LGPL project has simple fixes to ASP.NET 2.0/4.0 to achieve XHTML compliance as measured by the W3C tests at http://validator.w3.org/ The XHTML project shows as untrue the commonly held belief that MVP or MVC are necessary for producing XHTML compliant web pages. Introduction Now that the dust has settled and everyone has downloaded and installed Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, its time to talk about a new feature included that will help Silverlight Developers profile their applications. Let’s take a look at what the official documentation says about it: Performance Wizard for Silverlight – taken from VS2010 SP1 KB. Visual Studio 2010 SP1 enables you to tune the Silverlight application performance by profiling the code. A traditional code profiler cannot ...
Here is a quick notes about using regular expressions in the VS2010 Find Replace dialog. 1. To create a backreference, use curly braces (“{“ and “}” ) instead of regular parentheses. 2. To use the captured backreference, use \1\2 etc, where \1 is the first captured value, \2 is the second captured value, etc. Example: I want to find*: info.setFieldValue(param1, param2); and replace it with: SetFieldValue(info, param1, param2); To do this, I can use the following find/replace values: Find what: {[a-zA-Z0-9]+}.setFieldValu... ...
