As a consultant I have long stretches where I may be heads down with a single technology. In the mean time the rest of the world can be passing you by. When I get off of that project there is a lot to catch up to. I could buy a bunch of books or request time to go to a class, but the first is time consuming and the second is expensive. Pluralsight allows me to catch up quickly at the end of a project or even keep up during a project by giving comprehensive video courses for a reasonable price. The ...

From a consumption point of view, tech blogging is a great resource for one-off articles on niche subjects. If you spend any time reading tech blogs, you may find yourself running into several common, useless types of posts tech bloggers slip into. Some of these lame posts may just be natural due to common nerd psychology, and some others are probably due to lame, lemming-like laziness. I’m sure I’ll do my fair share of fitting the mold, but I quickly get bored when I happen upon posts that hit these ...
At http://shop.oreilly.com/cat... O'Reilly are offering a series of books on geo-location at 50% off until April 5, 2012 14:00 PT. HTML5 supports a standard, native <video> tag which is already well supported in browsers and has great backwards-compatibility options. Before you spend too much time on the HTML5 video element, you should spend some time getting comfortable with video codecs and debate going on regarding video codec support between the different browsers. Dive Into HTML5 has a great introduction to the topic, and these Information Week and Register articles can help catch you up on the current state of video ...
Andy Dunn, known far and wide as The Zman (accept no substitutes) has been a strong supporter of the XNA community for many years now (and the Managed DirectX community before that). This coming Sunday at 9:41 pm EDT (UTC + 4) the Kickstarter project for the game, Guncraft, (on which he is the Lead Programmer) comes to a close. They’ve garnered pledges in the amount of $15,375 at the time I’m writing this. The project must meet a funding target of $16,000 by the aforementioned deadline. I think this ...

LAN parties offer the enjoyment of head to head gaming in a real-life social environment. In general, they are experiencing decline thanks to the convenience of Internet gaming, but Kenton Varda is a man who takes his LAN gaming very seriously. His LAN gaming house is a fascinating project, and best of all, Linux plays a part in making it all work.Varda has done his own write ups (short, long), so I'm only going to give an overview here. The setup is a large house with 12 gaming stations and a single ...

Programming Direct3D requires understanding of where different types of resources are bound to the shader pipeline. The shader pipeline consists of configurable fixed function stages (Input Shader, Tessellator, Stream Output, Rasterizer, Output merger), and opt-in HLSL programmable shader stages (Vertex Shader, Hull Shader, Domain Shader, Geometry Shader, Pixel Shader, Compute Shader). Passing data into shaders involves creating & binding resources to the pipeline in C++ on CPU, so that HLSL ...
For those of you that missed it, Rob Conery offered a challenge a couple nights ago to build an API for Tekpub. In response to this, a few different developers took the opportunity to propose their solution to the requirements. One of those developers, John Sheehan, offered his solution entitled, Don’t build the best REST API, build the best HTTP API and tweeted that the title might be a bit linkbaitish. I understood the point he was trying to make and I think he did a fine job. Building an API should ...

A good article by the man himself as to why Flash is not supported on iPhones, iPads and iPods, at http://www.apple.com/hotnew... there is also a long history between Apple and Adobe as mentioned in the book by Walter Isaacson. This could explain the resistance by Steve Jobs to Adobe Flash. Excerpt from Steve Job's Biography by Walter Isaacson'sTo make this work, the iMac needed to have great video editing software. So Jobs went to his old friends at Adobe, the digital graphics ...
Summary I ran into a visual issue using DirectX (in C# via SlimDX) in which the texture filtering was not aligning properly. This is difficult to describe in words, so read the fully explanation below. The solution is pretty simple, so I decided to post about it in hopes that it is use to another DirectX neophyte in the future. The Problem Like most normal people, in my spare time I work on an open-source emulator for the long-lost 3DO multiplayer video game system (see fourdo.com for all your 3DO ...

I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 (CES) which was held in Las Vegas. This is a good show for me and the company that I work for as it shows us some of the possible future trends of digital media consumption. Things presented at CES may just come and go and be quickly forgotten, but at the same time, there are definite themes on the conference that companies need to pay attention to. 3D is so yesterday! This was actually the second CES that I have been to and both were focused ...

Kevin Tews, a very awesome guy who was the organizer of my trip to Haiti two years ago put together and amazing video from some of the photos I took while in Haiti. I’m not sure I have ever thrown this down in writing. I probably have said this 800 or 900 times, but I think that HTML 5 in SharePoint 2010 sucks. The support is terrible in the two most prevalent web browsers at the enterprise level – Internet Explorer and Firefox. If you can’t even get the video tag to work in IE 9 or the latest version of Firefox then that’s a huge fail for the product with HTML 5. What I think needs to be done in the product to improve HTML 5 support so that we can move towards ...

Yes, we all know that the IT field is ever-changing. Yes, we all know the importance of keeping up to date on emerging technologies. Yes, we all know that you may never have the opportunity to use a lot of those technologies in your day-to-day role. So here is where the great divide comes… Those that are believers that the responsibility lies with their employer to provide ongoing training, and those that inherently take on the responsibility for themselves. The difference between the two views is ...
The holidays have become a time rich with traditions for me. Family wise, its a time to get together and celebrate the people that love and support us throughout the year. Turkeys are cooked, gifts are opened, and well wishes are shared. But in the midst of all the goodness and emotion is another holiday that lends itself more to what Scrooge might value – capitalism, thrift, and commercialism. Yes, I’m talking about Boxing Day! Boxing Day, for my American friends, is very much Canada’s Black Friday ...

Bug or Feature? © 2012 By: Dov Trietsch. All rights reserved. I was born in a time and place where avant-garde accountants used a handle-powered adding machines, old-fashioned ones still used pencil and paper, and all used their heads. As a child I did most of my calculations mentally and reverted to paper and pencil only for the really tough ones. As a young statistician I did most of my calculations on an Electro-mechanical calculator which had the ability to do the sum of x while computing the ...
