I saw a YouTube video that when you boiled it down said that since Microsoft isn’t predominantly an open source company that they are irrelevant. The speaker strikes me as someone who doesn’t live in the real world. I rarely see a client that is exclusively Microsoft technology especially after a number of mergers. I have worked often on projects that used Web Sphere long side IIS, DB2 and Oracle along with SQL Server, and open source tools along with purchased frameworks. Of course we can always ...
I have blogged about Cross platform Windows Azure command line tooling. This is free open source tooling available for developers wishing to use commands to either automate or simplify their build processes. You can see my post here http://blogs.msdn.com/b/afr... This is an introductory post aimed at getting started. Hopefully a more meaty post will follow. Technorati Tags: Windows Azure,node.js,CLI,open ...
The W8 preview is now installed and I am enjoying it. I remember the learning curve of my first unix machine back in the eighties, this ain't that.It is normal for me to do the first os install with a keyboard and low end monitor...you never know what you'll encounter out in the field. The OS took like a fish to water. I used a low end INTEL motherboard dp55w I gathered on the cheap, an 1157 i5 from the used bin a pair of 6 gig ddr3 sticks, a rosewell 550 watt power supply a cheap used twenty buck ...
Forward: Sometimes I really feel like technology recruiters have no experience or knowledge of the field they are recruting for. A warning to those companies hiring technical recruiters -- ensure that the technical recruiters you hire to fill a position are actually technical. Here's proof below, where I make up completely ridiculous technologies, but still have interest from the recruiter for an interview. Letter to me: Hello - Your name came up as a possible match for a long term contract Cold ...
For the last decade, I have repeatedly, in my imitable Microsoft fan boy style, offered an alternative view to commonly held beliefs about Microsoft's stance on open source licensing. In earlier times, leading figures in Microsoft were very vocal in resisting the idea that commercial licensing is outmoded or morally reprehensible. Many people interpreted this as all-out corporate opposition to open source licensing. I never read it that way. It is true that I've met individual employees of Microsoft ...

LAN parties offer the enjoyment of head to head gaming in a real-life social environment. In general, they are experiencing decline thanks to the convenience of Internet gaming, but Kenton Varda is a man who takes his LAN gaming very seriously. His LAN gaming house is a fascinating project, and best of all, Linux plays a part in making it all work.Varda has done his own write ups (short, long), so I'm only going to give an overview here. The setup is a large house with 12 gaming stations and a single ...
When you have to work with languages away from the many languages supported by Visual Studio, then a good text editor is a required. Now almost any text editor is better than Notepad but Notepad++ is excellent.

Download it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/notepad-plus/

There are a variety of add-ons for Notepad++. Try it - it is an open source editor that is free.
If you have not heard the latest technical news yet, the SQL Server 2012 Virtual Launch event is today March 8, 2012! Register to not to miss this opportunity to interact with technology experts and win cool prizes! I am thrilled and excited! Why? Because like in the automotive industry, every new iteration of a vehicle is more fuel efficient, safer, more polished, looking more attractive and fun to drive. Sure, the the new version of the SQL Server is ready to take me further in what I can deliver ...
While I am not a fan of offshoring IT development, I do understand the attraction. From a rate perspective they look very attractive, but in my experience that is the smallest part of the story when it comes to offshore resources. There are a number of hurdles you will have to deal with if you are going use developers that are half way around the world. The first obstacle is the language and cultural barrier. I am not talking about just understanding the words, but understanding the meaning behind ...
I have just published a new open source project called WinGrep at http://wingrep.codeplex.com/

WinGrep is a WinForms utility for searching through text files such as VB6, VB.NET or C# code for a designed string. There is a facility to ignore WinForms designer files.
I am happy to announce that I have open sourced and released my first Windows Phone 7 Application to Marketplace a few days back. You can get the source code from http://gtasksplus.codeplex.... I will also do a series of few blog posts to take you all through developing the application from scratch. Check back regularly. Sorry for not posting anything for a long time, I have been concentrating on learning some new things and did not really get a chance to continue blogging. Will try and be consistent ...
I would like to share that I will be speaking at the Deerfield Beach Coders Café on February 7th, 2012 6:30 PM on concepts behind PRISM and MEF including IoC Containers, Composition, Dependency Injection, Loose-coupling and Inheritance. We will be also adding a little Agile spin to the talk focusing on the importance and ideal use of the underlying design patterns in an Agile software shop. I am also scheduled to present a similar topic at the upcoming South Florida Code Camp taking place on Saturday ...

I will be hosting this project in http://www.codeplex.com/ as open source project. I’m working on it so stay tuned! =}

I’ve been testing\evaluating ComponentOne’s Studio for ASP.NET Wijmo suite for an MVC 3 project and I’m quickly becoming a fan! This product has so many things going for it that I’m not sure where to start. I’m going to focus on the Wijmo components, but the suite also contains a set of controls for ASP.NET WebForms development. If the Webform controls are as good as the MVC controls, they’re worth a look. There are two versions of the Wijmo components. An open source version containing 30 widgets ...
For various reasons you may find that the default JsonResult returned by invoking the controller method such as return Json([data); Is unsuitable for the consumer. The main issue most often encountered is that this method uses the JsonResult which in turn uses the JavaScriptSerializer with no access to the JavaScriptTypeResolver. This means that you can provide that serializer a parameter specifying you own custom type resolver. Other issues, such as maximum recursion depth and maximum length and ...
ASP.NET Enterpise Manager is a web based database management system designed specifically for the management of Microsoft SQL databases through a web browser, without the need for any desktop database management systems such as Microsoft’s SQL Server Management Studio. ASP.NET Enterprise Manager is included as default with an installation of Plesk for Windows, meaning that if you are a customer who uses Plesk based Windows hosting, you will most likely have used ASP.NET Enterprise Manager at least ...
If you follow the MVP program a bit, you might have heard about Rob Eisenberg and his struggles with the MVP program. If you haven’t, well, just move along, there’s nothing interesting to read here. Still here? Good. For those of you who don’t know who Rob is: he is the creator of Caliburn and Caliburn Micro, a MVVM Framework I truly love, support and have written about here before. He is one of the bigger contributors to the Open Source community in the Microsoft technologies. If you work on anything ...
Greetings, this is my first geeks with blogs posting. so forgive me if it looks so sloppy. Purpose: To calculate additional shipping fees for a shopping cart full of items based on product name in Magento 1.4. We will assume the same shipping rate for all services here. Most items in our store are the same size and weight, except for a few items that are a little larger. We will identify those large items by name and add some amount onto them. First we shall start off with a free open source Magento ...
As someone who works a lot on Silverlight and as someone who have presented lots of trainings / talks over Silverlight; i am been getting a lot of questions based on future of Silverlight. Is Silverlight dead? http://www.zdnet.com/blog/m... These are often from end-clients, managers, architects or even consumers. Sometimes also from guys who have little exposure to Silverlight; but still want to engage in the conversation as it is "happening" ...

I have just recived this from the Author of that excellent product NMAP:"Um, what people WANT when they download Nmap is Nmap itself. Not tohave their searches redirected to Bing and their home page changed toMicrosoft's MSN.Speaking of which, Microsoft emailed me today. They said that theydidn't know they were sponsoring CNET to trojan open source software, and that they have stopped doing it. But the trojan installer usesyour Internet connection to obtain more "special offers" from CNET,and they ...
For several years, I use TDD (Test-Driven Development) to produce code. I no longer plans to work without using TDD. The use of TDD significantly increases code quality, but does not guarantee that the code is the code that corresponds to the requirements specifications (write the "right code" with BDD as opposed to the write "code right" with BDD). Dan North has described in an article in published in 2006 the foundations of the BDD (Behavior-Driven Development). In this article, he introduces the ...
Ok, so I needed to convert .docx files to .pdf files on the fly, but none of the free php libraries that were available let me do it on my server (a webservice was not good enough). Basically either I needed to pay for a library (and have it maybe suck) or just deal with the free ones that didn't convert the formatting well enough. Not good enough! I found that LibreOffice (OpenOffice's successor) allows command line conversion using the LibreOffice conversion engine (which DID preserve the formatting ...
This is the third of a three part series that deals with the issue of faking test data in the context of a legacy app that was built with Microsoft's Entity Framework (EF) on top of an MS SQL Server database – a scenario that can be found very often. Please read the first part for a description of the sample application, a discussion of some general aspects of unit testing in a database context, and of some more specific aspects of the here discussed EF/MSSQL combination. Lately, I wondered how you ...
Last week, at the PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server) Summit in Seattle, Microsoft held a coming out party, not only for SQL Server 2012 (formerly “Denali”), but also for the company’s “Big Data” initiative. Microsoft’s banner headline announcement: it is developing of a version of Apache Hadoop that will run on Windows Server and Windows Azure. Hadoop is the open source implementation of Google’s proprietary MapReduce parallel computation engine and environment, and it's used (quite widely ...
Recently I delivered a session at Virtual TechDays on why NuGet is so useful. As a part of the demonstration, I was showcasing how it automatically allows us to update some of the external reference libraries. Point in case, here is jQuery. Starting Visual Studio 2008 SP1, we have been shipping jQuery and intellisense for jQuery thereof. With Visual Studio 2010, out of the box, when we create a “File – New Project – ASP.NET Web Application” (which would create a Webforms application) it would automatically ...
I had written earlier about the WebMatrix v2 Beta release that happened recently at the BUILD Conference As I had mentioned earlier, WebMatrix is a light weight tool for Web Development, Profiling, Database management, Optimization and also deployment. Its an end to end tool for web developers. Web Matrix is different from Visual Studio in the sense, it doesn’t require web developers to master C#, ASP.NET and other programming techniques. Web Matrix uses a simple Razor syntax and HTML markup for ...
Download binaries and application – 32K Source code – 99K Background Recently I was looking for a .NET implementation of QR code generator. Most of components either use online services to generate and/or recognize QR code or the implementation was not “good enough” for my purposes. The most popular and very powerful Java implementation comes from google’s open source project code.google.com/p/zxing called ZXing (Zebra Crossing => Z=Zebra + X=Cross + ing). There I found a one-to-one c# port of ...
C++ is a very powerful language. Well written native C++ code can perform much better than managed languages like C# and Java due to optimizations that the managed systems are not able to perform during run-time compilation (if this is done at all, that is). This is great for developers who work on gaming technology for instance. For people concerned with game logic, performance isn’t necessarily priority number one, but productivity and the ability to express oneself without too much head banging. ...
Hey guys. I need to take a moment, break the fourth wall, and address the readers. First, I have another speaking engagement. I will be giving a full 2 hour workshop on XNA at the Huntsville New Technology User's Group meeting on October 11 at 6PM. We'll take a little break at 7 and pizza will be provided. Full details and directions can be found at huntug.org. I have not forgotten about "the project." The design document is done. It got tied up with the corporate lawyer, who wanted to make sure ...
Occasionally I write a rant or two and this one has been boiling for ages. First off you need to read Mike Watson’s Blog Post on Silverlight Ambiguity in Office 365: http://jmikewatson.wordpres... So now let’s get started. First off this post has been boiling since I have heard the question in one of my sessions last year “What do you think will happen to Silverlight now that HTML 5 exists?”. I brushed it aside. I ignored it when ...
Technorati Tags: Scala,C# to Scala Introduction This post gives an overview of Scala from a C# developer’s perspective in light of efforts for a current .Net port coming closer to fruition. By closer I mean they have the compiler done but not the Visual Studio or SharpDevelop plug-in. From what I could find there is also no CLR based REPL available. You are also unable to call CLR code with generic signatures. While all of these issues are being worked on, to have a play I suggest using the JVM implementation ...
Download QuadTreeOptimization.zip c# project Background Today I'd like to share with you interesting experiences I made last several evenings when working on one of my open source hobby projects - Source Code Cloud Generator http://sourcecodecloud.code... One of the tasks was arranging of nonintersecting rectangles on a 2D surface in certain pattern. For quick 2D collision detection (rectangle intersection) I decided to use QuadTree data structure [see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... ...
Today we are glad to announce HERMES, an Open Source Infrastructure for publish subscribe messaging model based on MongoDB and RESTful Services. This is 8th release of an open source project from TellagoDevLabs on Codeplex. Hermes is months of hard work by us, including Silvio Massari, Jose Romaniello and Gustavo Machado. Hermes is not BizTalk Server. BizTalk Server has pub-sub mechanism in its infrastructure but in very traditional way and it hasn’t provided a foundation that can be seamlessly used ...
Continuing my short but sweet posts regarding issues I've encountered and corrected during development...... If you are working with the Telerik MVC suite of controls within your ASP.NET MVC application you may encounter a JavaScript error similar to "Object doesn't support this property or method". The problem? Telerik controls make use of jQuery and by default will add a script registrar to your view which then automatically includes the core jQuery JavaScript files. Like many developers you may ...
Query Templates, Data Link, and Globalization I am sure you must have read Scott Guthrie’s blog post about jQuery support and officially supporting jQuery's templating, data linking and globalization, if not here it is: jQuery Templating Since we are an open source shop and use jQuery and jQuery plugins extensively to say the least, decided to look into the templating a bit and see what data linking is all about. For those not familiar with those terms here is the summary, plenty of material out ...
If you still didn’t explore Extension Manager under Tools in Visual Studio 2010 now it’s the time! VS2010 can be expended to include add-ons you wish to have. The Extension Manager list is pretty extensive, where most of them are ‘still work in progress’ tools but, at least, it is worth trying. Listed below are top ranked ones that should help to enhance your coding experience: · Productivity Power Tools – set of small gadgets: Auto Brace Completion, Quick Access, Column Guides, Align Assignments, ...
I think mostly people do intend that snippets they publish on their blogs get used by people for their own purposes. However, unless you explicitly say otherwise, in many countries, your blog posts are automatically copyrighted. Which normally is a good thing, it means you can’t accidently forget to protect your work! But it does mean that you need to explicitly give away the rights to anything you publish that you intend for anyone else to use freely. So if that is your intention, I think somewhere ...
This is a quick introduction to moving from our own internal assembly repository to using NuGet. It’s terse for a reason, just a note to self and those I work with: What we had One source of builds external to our code repository Didn’t check in external builds Used DVCS to share single feed Rake task to update and copy latest builds local checkout (this location is excluded from VCS) Automatic updates if changed in central repository and version not incremented Caused problems when changes were ...
Been a busy week for me, wish it was full of XNA stuff and that is why I’m busy (and that the notes are late…again) but not the case. I’m just going to have to figure out a better way of integrating the XNA Notes into some of the stuff going on lately or maybe change my life situation so these things aren’t going on. I’m working on figuring it out both ways. But you don’t come here to read about my personal stuff, you come to see what the XNA community has been up to! So without further ado, here’s ...
NuGet (pronounced NewGet), is an open source .Net Package Management Tool compatible with Visual Studio 2010 both Express and Commercial Editions. This simple-yet-powerful tool offers a simple way for incorporating and managing .Net packages in Visual Studio 2010 projects. In leveraging NuGet, we get an intuitive user interface allowing the selection of available packages and an easy way to subsequently manage version upgrades or uninstalls for packages already installed via NuGet. I recently spoke ...
At http://json.codeplex.com there is an excellent open source project for accessing JSON data from Dot Net. The home page states: Features -Flexible JSON serializer to convert .NET objects to JSON and back again -LINQ to JSON for reading and writing JSON -Writes indented, easy to read JSON -Convert JSON to and from XML -Supports Silverlight and Windows Phone The JSON serializer is a good choice when the JSON you are reading or writing maps closely to a .NET class. The serializer automatically reads ...
I attended MIX11 a couple of weeks ago and had the opportunity to meet up with Glen Block at one of the open source festival booths where he was demoing MEF (Managed Extensibility Framework). During his demonstration, he showed a very cool (in my opinion) feature of MEF that allows you to export a concrete class that may or may not implement some predefined interface. This is done through the magic of the C# 4.0 dynamic keyword, which allows the compiler to bypass static type checking during compilation. ...
The list provided below is my “Best-Of” FREE Frameworks, Tools and Controls for Windows Phone 7. I have used everything listed below in an my WP7 applications. Most of them are in the marketplace at this point and some are still in development. Let’s get started. If you are developing WP7 Applications, this is one that you have probably heard of already. It is Microsoft’s official set of controls that comes complete with full source code of course. Project Description: Welcome to the Silverlight ...

During the MIX conference in April 2011 in Las Vegas, Microsoft has (accidently?) mentioned they might publish the official Kinect SDK as OpenSource. This is great news, although there already is an open source alternative: the OpenKinect movement has several samples of open source initiatives available. Read the blogpost by Joshua Blake for more details. Nevertheless, the whole thing has started me thinking about using Kinect as an alternative to more traditional means of getting user input. Of course, ...

This post is from a very good friend of mine, Billy Hollis. He’s got some interesting food for thought and I think you’ll enjoy his perspective! For over 15 years now, our industry has been struggling with a crucial tradeoff. We can get broad reach via standards, or we can get the best possible user experience with applications that take advantage of particular devices or platforms. It's a stereotype that people in software development tend to be code and technology centric and not user centric. ...
What a crazy week! Big game releases from the XNA Community, podcasts, reviews, interviews, new educational content being posted and all sorts of upcoming titles that I’m excited about. If there was ever a week that I missed stuff, this was the week. Seemed like every time I glanced at twitter or checked my RSS feeds there was some interesting and new XNA thing going on. No need for me to try and convince you, just like at the size of this weeks XNA Notes! Time Critical XNA News: Making Windows Phone ...
