If you've downloaded the new VS 11 Beta and done any merging, then you've probably seen the new diff and merge tools built into VS 11. They are awesome, and by far a vast improvement over the ones included in VS 2010. There is one problem with the merge tool though, and in my opinion it is huge… Read more at http://blog.danskingdom.com... ...
I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window. If you have missed while creating ...
Deployment of custom checkin policies can be done using either an MSI or VSIX. There are many reasons to prefer using the VSIX format. It is more lightweight, and thus more suitable for small components for VS, as it will not “pollute” the installed programs store. Further, since the Visual Studio setup projects have been cut from Visual Studio 11, the VSIX is a better choice, being supported both in VS 2010 and VS 11. VSIX is also very easy to create, once you know how, and it is very fast running ...
I have some basic rules when it comes to checked in code to TFS. The one at the top of the list of rules is that, any developer should get the latest code from TFS, deploy and have a working web part, workflow or any other customization in SharePoint. This means that all dependencies should be deployed with the customization. If the web part uses a custom list as a data source, then a developer should not have to manually create site columns with the ‘correct’ internal and display name, list instances ...
A while back I was helping a client upgrade SharePoint 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 and I came across this interesting problem. I was working web parts that were created in Visual Studio 2008 using WSPBuilder extensions. The first order of business was to convert them to Visual Studio 2010 templates instead of using WSPBuilder 2010 extensions. Why Use Visual Studio 2010 templates? There are two main reasons I highly recommend using Visual Studio 2010 templates instead of using WSPBuilder 2010 templates. ...
Before I describe about my session, let me introduce the history of making this great event. We SharePoint Experts Community arranged this Community Day jointly with Microsoft to introduce SharePoint 2010 on 7th January 2012 which is the first time in Bangladesh. Thanks to Microsoft Bangladesh to Sponsor the whole Program and others co-sponsors. We planned 6 months ago to arrange this type of event for Developers and IT Professional who might be interested about SharePoint Technology and proposed ...
I presented two talks on windows azure recently. One among them was focusing on Windows Phone 7 app development. The other one was on MVC3 ASP .Net app. The idea was to introduce how Windows Azure can be leveraged in both these exciting platforms. The talk was demo centric; below are the slides and the demo / webcasts recordings links for the same. Talk one- Building Windows Phone Applications with Windows Azure Platform and Visual Studio 2010 Demo included: Creating a Demo application from VS 2010 ...
This is another x64 issue where I was really surprised that it does exist. When you compile in VS2010/MsBuild a managed target for which the corresponding serialization assembly is generated you will find that all works until you try to compile for 64 bit. There you will get: "SGEN : error : An attempt was made to load an assembly with an incorrect format: xxxx.dll." Here is the 32 bit SGen is called for the 64 bit target which cannot load a 64 bit assembly. I have no idea why MS did not provide ...
Whenever I do use Visual Studio and try to compile something under 64 bit I run into problems. It seems that most MS Devs for Visual Studio and the relevant tool chain are still mainly writing 32 bit applications. Here are some of the latest issues I did run into. COM applications targeting x64 are still using x32 as target platform for the MIDL compiler by default Resolution: You have to select in the UI MIDL – Target Environment X64 by yourself. Alternatively you can edit the vcxproj file directly ...
Goal: Enabling HTML5 validation and IntelliSense for Visual Studio 2010. By default it is set to XHTML 1.1. HTML5 support only came included with SP1 of Visual Studio 2010. However since HTML5 is not an official standard as yet and some of the 30 new elements are not suported in all browsers, so only a subset of the entire HTML5 specification is supported; support for both intellisense and validation for HTML5 with SP1. How to: After installing SP1 you have to tell Visual Studio to start using the ...
Once you have configured your online preview, then you can proceed to connect to it using Visual Studio 2010. In order to get Live ID authentication working and such, there is an update you need to apply. This is something that can be accessed through the Administration page, and then clicking on download software. Clicking on that link will take you to the Visual Studio ALM + Team Foundation Server Blog. From this page, you will be able to download the needed component to connect and authenticate ...
In the recent update of Visual Studio 2010 productivity power tool there are few new interesting features introduced. You can download the Productivity tool from http://bit.ly/9nybU6 . There are certain new features like Quick Find which allows you find and advance find dialog option with in code editor with nice highlighting features, nice enhancement of add reference window. Kunal Chowdhury has some nice blog post where he talked about above two new productivity tool features. You can find the ...
When you download the samples for this sdk, they are going to be read only as they are coming from the web. Windows 7 is pretty smart about this and automatically marks them read only, then VS 2010 picks that up and warns you Then when you try to run the sample, if the sample tries to read the config files it will most likely throw an exception. The solution I found was to use Windows Explorer and mark all sample folders as read write. Make sure VS is closed when you do this. Then open VS and boom, ...
I am playing more with the Windows Developer Preview and simply love the backward compatibility it has for applications that used to work in Windows 7. And one of the applications critical to my day-to-day life is Visual Studio. Visual Studio 2010 with SP1 and ASP.NET MVC 3 Tools is my everyday requirement. Windows Developer Preview when installed from the MSDN Center has two flavors. One with the Developer Tools which I would assume, most of us developers would want and the other one, which is simply ...
If you are planning to deploy your application with SQL CE as your application backend then here are the steps you need to perform. If you’re planning to deploy your application with SQL Server, than please read this post, How to Deploy an ASP.NET MVC 3 App to Web Hosting with "\bin Deployment" I assume that you have your ASP.NET MVC 3 application ready to be deployed with SQL CE 4.0 and EF 4.1. But make sure you have add assembly and for SQL CE 4.0 using NuGet. I recommend you to use NuGet here ...
The August ‘11 TFS Power Tools are ready for download. Brian Harry has a good summary of the update here. The big visible changes are: 1. The ability to use the shell extensions against a TFS not on the same domain as your PC. You now get a credentials prompt. 2. Work Item Search!! The Work Item Tracking toolbar now contains a search box. I know my friend and fellow MVP Etienne Tremblay has been asking for this for about 5 years! 3. Rollback IN THE UI!! TFS 2010 introduced rollback. However, you ...
Among the new content in the release, is a set of ALM docs and labs. The ALM content referenced above is: o Using Code Analysis with Visual Studio 2010 to Improve Code Quality o Introduction to Exploratory Testing with Microsoft Test Manager 2010 o Introduction to Platform Testing with Microsoft Test Manager 2010 o Introduction to Quality Tracking with Visual Studio 2010 o Introduction to Test Planning with Microsoft Test Manager 2010 All ALM labs point to the latest version of the VS 2010 RTM VM. ...
[Updated with an answer to Question 3] Once again I want to thank everyone who came out for my talk on IntelliTrace and Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate yesterday at Tech Ed 2011! After querying some MVPs and some product group members, we’ve come up with answers to some of the questions that were posed yesterday: Question 1: Can you turn on call logging in IntelliTrace dynamically? The example I was given was the application under test takes a while to spin up and makes a bunch of calls that they don’t ...

Recently i faced a bizarre problem in IIS 7.0 where none of my configured local sites worked. Hitting the starting URL of each application took me to the general error page. Infact when i tried to check if IIS is running or not i tried with http://localhost. But no success i still got the same error page. The IIS Manager was launched and checked if everything was okay? I found everything perfect over there. But still IIS was not working and none of my application was launching. Then i tried several ...
I recently did some training for a client and one of the topics that came up was upgrading existing 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 Projects. I just wanted to share some of the issues that came up and the discussion that might be usefull to others. If you developed customizations for SharePoint 2007 you either Visual Studio 2005/2008 VSeWSS 1.1/1.2/1.3 or you used WSPBuilder. A lot of fellow SharePoint MVP's and experienced SharePoint Developers used WSPBuilder. I personally prefered it over the VSeWSS ...
At TechEd India 2011 I presented on HTML5 Development with Visual Studio 2010 SP1. I wanted to cover the aspects that were discussed in my session. HTML5 1. HTML5 is the emerging but promising trend in web development 2. Some of the standards have got green signal i.e. they are candidate recommendations. 3. Some others are still work in progress. 4. IE9 implements standardized HTML5 specifications. Visual Studio 2010 and HTML5 Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 comes from basic HTML5 support. Having ...
I posted this yesterday but had the wrong link at the bottom. SP1 for VS 2010 just hit the web today. Check it out at http://support.microsoft.co... This should fix lots of big and little things such as startup time, bugs and more. Plus there are tons of features in there too for web, xaml, and other application types. I am really excited about the unit testing and load testing features that were added. Theres also an update for .Net 4 framework. And check out the new Silverlight ...

One of the many neat functions added to Visual Studio in VS 2010 was the Navigate To feature. You can find it by clicking Edit, Navigate To, or by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl, (yes, that's control plus the comma key). This pops up the Navigate To dialog that looks like this: As you type, Navigate To starts searching through a number of different search providers for your term. The entries in the list change as you type, with most providers doing some kind of fuzzy or at least substring matching. ...
On January 29th Etienne Tremblay and I presented infront of roughly 120 people in Ottawa a 7 hours "sketch" on how VS 2010 and TFS 2010 can help both devs and testers in their respective work. The presentation focused on how a testers' work can positively influence a developers' work and vice versa. The format was quite unusual as I said it's a "sketch" where Etienne and I "ignore" the audience and we do as if we were at work and the audience is sort of "spying" on us. In all I'm quite pleased with ...
Hey everyone, I know it’s been an eternity since I blogged but I have so much to do that I unfortunately need to prioritize. Vincent Grondin and I did a 7h presentation on the new developer and tester tools available in the VS 2010 suite. It was a blast. We did it in front of an audience (around 120) and it was taped. We did it as a play and really didn’t look at the crowd at all we were training each other on the technology. It is now available for anyone that would like to watch it at this location: ...

Part 1 - Listing Data from Database: Let us now learn ASP.NET MVC 2 from Scratch by actually developing a front end website for the Chinook database, which is an alternative to the traditional Northwind database. You can get the Chinook database from here. As always the best way to learn something is by working on it and doing something. The Chinook database has the following schema, a quick look will help us implementing the application in a efficient way. Let us first implement a grid view table ...

When checking in code with workitems, one should connect them with workitems. In some cases you need to check in multiple times before the item is resolved. If you are too quick there, the checkin action causes the workitem to go to the Resolved state as this is the default state, if you don’t manually change it to Associate. This default state can now – in VS 2010 – be turned around, so that Associate becomes the default action. See this blog post for the details. As noted in Ed’s post, this key ...
I was trying to install a web app that another team member built. this failed with the message: “The installer was interrupted before <MyApp> could be installed. You need to restart the installer to try again.” Trying again is (obviously) meaningless, it will just fail over and over. And the error message is very general, something failed. In the eventlog we can find this error: Installation success or error status: 1603 If we run the installer again but with verbose logging: msiexec /i MyInstaller.msi ...
Many sites have a contact form, instead of posting email addresses. Admittedly, email addresses are convenient for customers because they can use a mailto link that brings up their email client and allow them to start typing, archive the communication, and manage the thread. When I first started C# Station, that’s what I did; posted my email address for everyone. Holy cow, what a mistake. I received so much spam that my inbox was unusable. Fortunately, spam is more manageable these days, but it’s ...
Microsoft has made a target Schema for HTML 5 development. This schema can be installed on VS 2008 en VS 2010. You can download it form this website. Then run the installer. If VS 2010 is not installed in it’s default location (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.00), then after running the .msi, you will have to manually move the ‘html_5.xsd’ to the location where VS 2010 is installed on your machine, for the intellisense to work properly ...
In this blog post, we will take a quick look at the new MVC 3 project options as well as the pretty sharp Razor View Engine (not suitable for shaving :) ). Based on a nice Stackoverflow post, it seems that MVC 3/Razor will only be supported in Visual Studio 2010/.Net 4.0. This is great as it will give developers yet another good selling point to argue for upgrading to .Net 4.0. Creating a new ASP.Net MVC 3 project Prior to ASP.Net MVC 3 Beta, Selecting “New Project” in VS 2010 yielded two templates ...
I am totally in love with ASP.Net MVC 2 so I figured what better topic for my first post. When I first saw the presentations on MVC (or if you prefer MVVM), I wasn't impresesed. My first reaction is "I already do that." I looked at it as a design pattern, seperation of concerns, etc. Then I watched Scott Hanselman's video and realized two very important things: MVC is not web forms MVC 2 ships with VS 2010 (even Express) The second is possibly the most important. I had looked at other Microsoft patterns ...
I’ve been making my way through a few MVC books recently and was looking forward to reading Stephens book. Stephen does a lot of videos on the Microsoft asp.net site that I like and I was not disappointed by the book. Although not really targeted at MVC2 and VS 2010 all the basics are the same. He does an excellent job of stepping through the components of MVC… controllers, views, models and routing. He also digs into HTML helpers, binding, caching, authentication, testing and jquery. All the examples ...
Merge Wpf and Silverlight to single framework · Merge both frameworks to use the same assemblies and controls (with optional functionality in separate assemblies) make a .net silverlight profile that would be a subset of .net client profile and used by partially trusted xaps. · Conditional compilation within Xaml - stopgap solution: for Silverlight/WPF differences in shared markup. · Support the direct hosting of Silverlight – stopgap solution: support the direct hosting of Silverlight in a WPF application ...
While working to get the AutoCompleteExtender control up and running in a custom DNN module, I ran across a forum post that said doing so "just works", which if you have previous ASP.NET AJAX experience and know what is and isn't in DNN is probably very true. Trying to get it to run for the first time though, there's a few items to be aware of. Getting Started First recommendation, go download Fiddler (http://www.fiddler2.com/fi... like now... no seriously go download it. If you are running ...

[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... Web.config transformation is a simple and powerful inclusion in .NET 4.0 for generating configuration files for different environments. It's a templated match-and replace, and you can put together a homegrown alternative with T4 and some scripting, but the integrated experience is better. It's limited to web.config in Visual Studio, but with a simple MSBuild target you can leverage it for any config file. The transform is based on your VS.NET solution ...
A few days (maybe even a week ago now) I had an email in my inbox asking me if I’d like to have a copy of NDepend so I could maybe write something about it on my blog. I went through 3 stages – 1st – free software?! Hell yes, I’ll have that… 2nd, actually, I have Visual Studio 2010, I have code metrics already, do I need more? 3rd – presumably there is a reason that NDepend exists, maybe I should take this opportunity to get to know why and what it’s for. So I said ‘yes’ and the next day I had NDepend ...
Playing with the emulator: The WP7 emulator actually does a lot more than just run your games from VS 2010. If you want to make use of some of the “hidden” features of the emulator, you need to run it separately from VS 2010 and use some of the command line options. If you open up a command line window and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\1.0 you will find a program called XDE.exe. Run that and you will get the this popup showing the available Command Line Options. This by itself ...
There is a lot about Microsoft that is new and it will affect the world just the same. With windows 7, Exchange Server 2010, Server 2008 and VS 2010 (just to mention a few), there appears to be a complete refresh cycle in play. The programming paradigm is still in flux, in fact. As we look towards a couple more iterations of HTML, set to fall upon us any day now, the entire programming community is confronted with what will totally alter the logic of programming forever...parallel programming....sure ...
[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... In my previous post, Cloud Services and Command-Query Separation: Part 1, I looked at the design of a service bus in the cloud based on Command-Query Separation. In this post, I'll walk through a sample solution meeting the design, using Amazon Web Services. Sample Cloud Service Bus Solution I've worked through an implementation of this using Amazon Simple Queue Service and Amazon SimpleDB - it's on github here: Cloud Service Bus sample solution. ...
Updates to the VS 2010 Productivity Power Tools are out! They adds some nice new features and enhancements. If you already have the VS 2010 Productivity Power Tools installed, you can update it to the latest release by choosing Visual Studio’s “Tools->Extension Manager” menu command. This will bring up the VS 2010 Extension Manager – which allows you to browse and download new extensions. If you click the “Updates” tab on the left-hand side of the dialog it also allows you to see any updates that ...
Visual Studio 2010 Productivity Power Tools Update If you installed the Productivity Power Tools as soon as they came out about a month ago, when you open VS 2010 the next time, it will notify you that there have been some updates to some extensions. Now, to update the extensions, you will go to the Get Started section of the Start screen, and make sure you have selected the Welcome Link, then you will expand the Extending Visual Studio area by clicking on it. Once you have expanded the Extending ...
One of the clear changes in Visual Studio from Visual Studio 2005, is the dependency of VS on IIS for creating websites/web applications. In VS 2005 until its SP1 you only had the choice to create Websites that use the local cassini web server for development purposes. The Web Application Projects allows you to create the legacy style of project based sites which can run on IIS. From VS 2008, you can create both Web Application Projects as well as Websites that can run on Cassini i.e. without the ...
Around the “Guild Hall” We had a great meeting in June. Brian Gough, our resident SharePoint expert, introduced some of the nifty new features in Visual Studio 2010 and SharePoint 2010. We still need to understand what comes “in the box” with SharePoint so we don’t run off and program something that already exists, but the ease of development – or maybe “ease of sensible development” – is greatly enhanced when VS 2010 is coupled with SharePoint 2010. Since SharePoint is one of Microsoft’s most successful ...
