I recently created a DLL and I wanted to reference it from a project I was developing in Visual Studio. In previous versions of Windows, doing so was simply a matter of dropping the DLL file in the C:\Windows\assembly folder. That would add the DLL to the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) and make it accessible in Visual Studio. However, as is often the case, Window 7 is different. Even if you have Administrator privileges on your machine, you still do not have permission to drop a file in the assembly ...

If you've downloaded the new VS 11 Beta and done any merging, then you've probably seen the new diff and merge tools built into VS 11. They are awesome, and by far a vast improvement over the ones included in VS 2010. There is one problem with the merge tool though, and in my opinion it is huge… Read more at http://blog.danskingdom.com... ...
I'm in the process of building out a Data Warehouse and encountered this issue along the way.In the environment, there is a table that stores all the folders with the individual level. For example, if a document is created here:{App Path}\Level 1\Level 2\Level 3\{document}, then the DocumentFolder table would look like this:IDID_ParentFolderName1... 121Level 232Level 3To my understanding, the table was built so that:Each proposal can have multiple documents stored at various locationsDifferent ...

I’ve had my 15” Mac Book Pro for a little over a year now, and its hands-down the best laptop I’ve ever owned…hardware wise. And I tried, I really really tried, to like OSX. I even bought Parallels so I could run Windows 7 and all my development tools while still trying to live in an OSX world. But in the end, I missed Windows too much. There were just too many shortcomings with OSX that kept me from being productive. For one thing, Office for Mac is *not* Office for Windows. The applications are ...

LAN parties offer the enjoyment of head to head gaming in a real-life social environment. In general, they are experiencing decline thanks to the convenience of Internet gaming, but Kenton Varda is a man who takes his LAN gaming very seriously. His LAN gaming house is a fascinating project, and best of all, Linux plays a part in making it all work.Varda has done his own write ups (short, long), so I'm only going to give an overview here. The setup is a large house with 12 gaming stations and a single ...
In my early development days, I used Microsoft Access for building databases. It made things easy since I only needed to package the database with the installation package so my clients would have access to it. When we began the development of a new package in Visual Studio .NET I decided to use SQL Server Express. It was free and provided good tools - also free. I thought it was a tremendous idea until it came time to distribute our new software! What a surprise. The nightmare Ah, the choices! Detach ...
Figuring out which software licensing options best suit your needs while being cost-effective can be confusing. Some businesses end up making their purchases through retail stores which means they miss out on volume licensing opportunities and others may unknowingly be using unlicensed software which means their business may be at risk. So let me help you make the best decision for your situation. You may want to review this blog post that lays out licensing basics for any organization that needs ...
You’ve likely heard about how Office 365 and Windows Intune are great applications to get you started with Cloud Computing. Many of you emailed me asking for more info on what Cloud Computing is, including the distinction between "Public Cloud" and "Private Cloud". I want to address these questions and help you get started. Let's begin with a brief set of definitions and some places to find more info; however, an excellent place where you can always learn more about Cloud Computing is the Microsoft ...

For the definitive discussion on unknown elements and the HTML5 Shiv check out Mark Pilgrim’s Dive Into HTML5 online book at http://diveintohtml5.info/s... Semantic tags increase the meaning and maintainability of your markup, help make your page more computer-readable, and can even provide opportunities for libraries that are written to automagically enhance ...
I saw a tweet asking why do we educate computer scientists to get developers and compared this to structural engineers and stone masons. I believe this is a good question with a flawed premise. The flaw is in thinking that a developer’s job is as simple and limited in variations as that of a mason. Almost every problem attacked by a developer requires that they bend their tools and materials in a new way. This requires that everyone on a team communicate and at least on some level understand each ...
Welcome to my new blog about user interfaces! In this first entry I will try to give you an overview what you can expect to find here in the future. With the increasing performance of embedded hardware and the spread of smartphones there´s a growing wish for highly interactive user interfaces also in other environments where embedded systems are in use. These may be HMIs for industrial application, health care systems and many more. If you want to develop such a system (or if your boss wants you ...
I recently deployed an MVC application to our production Windows 2003 Server and received an error that plagued me for longer then I care to admit. The error manifested when the Infragistics data grid attempted to render. The header would render, but the data area was empty and the waiting icon appeared and stayed. The script error associated with the problem is: The remote request to fetch data has failed: (parsererror) 'JSON' is undefinedIt turns out that the default compatibility settings in Internet ...
Prior to SSIS 2012 it was not possible to re-use or share the same cache across packages. What that meant is if you created a cache you will be able to consume it only in the very package where the cache was instantiated. Therefore, a developer could take only two routes from here – either make as much heavy ETL processing as possible inside the same package where the cache resides, or populate yet another cache object in every other package where it is needed. The latter was especially harmful leading ...
With as often as I write code that does not perform as well as I would like for it to, I can’t believe how hard it is to write slow code on purpose! My last post gave a mile-high overview of the new version of Redgate’s ANTS Performance Profiler and promised more detail to come. True to my word (this time), this post aims to take a fairly simple application with common “opportunities” and use ANTS Performance Profiler to quantify these opportunities and measure the results. If you’re working along ...
NDepend is a Visual Studio add-in designed for intense code analysis with the goal of high code quality. NDepend uses a number of metrics and aggregates the data in pleasing static and active visual reports. My evaluation of NDepend will be broken up into several different parts. In the first part of the evaluation I looked at the installation for the add-in. In this installment I cover my first impressions resulting from the initial profiling of the solution that I use throughout my evaluation. The ...

Register to not to miss this opportunity to interact with technology experts and win cool prizes! I am thrilled and excited! Why? Because like in the automotive industry, every new iteration of a vehicle is more fuel efficient, safer, more polished, looking more attractive and fun to drive. Sure, the the new version of the SQL Server is ready to take me further in what I can deliver ...
In this blog post I intend to capture some thoughts on code optimization in general and on how the new version of RedGate's ANTs Performance Profiler can be used to "optimize optimization". As developer's trying first to drive business value, many latch onto the mantra "Don't optimize too early". As with many axiom's, the spirit is right on - if you allow solving the business problem to wait while you shave milliseconds off of a process that takes minutes or you have found the best memory management ...
In the development of line-of-business (LOB) applications, there has long been a certain tug-of-war between tools that automate development, or frameworks that accelerate it, on the one hand; and the notion of coding from scratch, perhaps with the aid of code libraries developed in-house (or by the sole developer), on the other. This is typically put under the rubric of a zero-sum game before the debate even starts. Downstream project managers, analysts and users don’t want to pay the tax of having ...
I have some basic rules when it comes to checked in code to TFS. The one at the top of the list of rules is that, any developer should get the latest code from TFS, deploy and have a working web part, workflow or any other customization in SharePoint. This means that all dependencies should be deployed with the customization. If the web part uses a custom list as a data source, then a developer should not have to manually create site columns with the ‘correct’ internal and display name, list instances ...
A while back I was helping a client upgrade SharePoint 2007 code to SharePoint 2010 and I came across this interesting problem. I was working web parts that were created in Visual Studio 2008 using WSPBuilder extensions. The first order of business was to convert them to Visual Studio 2010 templates instead of using WSPBuilder 2010 extensions. Why Use Visual Studio 2010 templates? There are two main reasons I highly recommend using Visual Studio 2010 templates instead of using WSPBuilder 2010 templates. ...

A Windows healthcare application for clinics and physicians needed a cost-effective way to accommodate all operating systems without reducing the existing functionality and security. Since users use a variety of operating systems, it was determined that a web-based version of the application was the best way to overcome those installation roadblocks. This was also a great opportunity to enable tablet access as well and reach users who use tablets such as the iPad for work. A solution to turn this ...
We’re only in February, but the rest of the 10 months left in 2012 look to be very interesting in the Microsoft space with products that Developers and IT Pros will find intriguing. Redmond Channel Partner posted a great article outlining what products we can expect to make an appearance this year and when. Some highlights: Windows 8/Windows Server 8 Well we all know this is coming, and that it will be a huge focus of Microsoft’s marketing (once their people are actually allowed to talk about it). ...

This blog provides links to a presentation and a sample application that shows how to load data in SQL Azure using different techniques and tools. The presentation compares the following techniques: INSERT, BCP, INSERT BULK, SQLBulkCopy and a few tools like SSIS and Enzo Data Copy. The presentation contains load tests performed from a local machine with 4 CPUs, using 8 threads (leveraging the Task Parallel Library), to a SQL Azure database using the code provided below. The test loads 40,000 records. ...
The landscape of SQL Azure backups is changing rapidly. A few tools are becoming available at no charge and Microsoft is adding capabilities over time. Here a quick update.Microsoft ToolsMicrosoft offers two primary backup mechanisms so far:Export/Import feature available on the Azure Management portalThe COPY operation as part of its T-SQL CREATE DATABASE statementThese mechanisms do not offer a scheduling component and do not work together. To obtain a transactionally consistent backup, you first ...
Exchange is a complex and large product which can have one thousand and one possible issues, one more obscure as the next. The purpose of this guide is to shed some light, where possible, to how things work in Exchange (and outlook), how they can break and how you should approach the issue at hand. Unfortunately it is very time consuming to create a complete troubleshooting guide where every dependency is explained in detail. But that is not the aim of this document anyways. What is the aim? Give ...
As you might, or not, be aware off there is no item level based recovery in Exchange that is natively supported by Microsoft. So to perform recoveries we need the recovery storage group (captain obvious). The purpose of this is to mount the database you want to recover from on the Exchange server and use exmerge to merge the data you are recovering into the active database. An RSG will not be accessible to users and you can only create one at a time. Exchange 2003: 1. Open Exchange system manager ...
Usually you’ll get alerted to this issue with a call saying that users have not gotten any new email for a while. They will still be connected to Exchange in outlook, you can still log on to the OWA and, when looking at your hub servers, you can see that the all services are up and running (Note that it is possible the transport service could be stopped…). A number of reasons can exist as to why you are not getting any mail flow: · Your recipient polies are not configured correctly · The receive ...

It's important to understand the account that IIS is running under when you need to make changes to the security settings. If, for example, your Web application writes to files or to a database, you'll need to grant the correct permissions to the folder or database. Before you can change these security settings, it's important the know what account IIS is using. This FAQ details the various options available, both for "classic" ASP and ASP.NET applications. There is a big difference between classic ...
As software creators we don't get to decide what version of our tools / libraries that people use. If we try to force them, our users will go somewhere else. Update: What Type of Software This Applies To This post talks of tools, applications and libraries. Things that end up in the users hands. This does not apply to SaaS or websites. These do not end up in the hands of the users in the same sense. For those of you who immediately think of Chrome or Firefox, which are applications that end up in ...

Its been a while since I posted something in this blog.I've been dealing with a memory leak issue for the past week so I thought about sharing the experience I gained with you.First of all, when it comes to memory management in .NET some people think that it shouldn't be trusted so GC.Collect is triggered everywhere they think it will help lowering the memory working set of their application. It's just plain wrong. I had very rare occasions where I needed to explicitly collect objects from the GC.A ...
The Objective Three of the 6 development teams using TFS are moving to a different network and domain. There is no on-line connection between the old (source) and new (target) networks. Failed Approaches Clone the data tier and move the data tier to the new network. This failed because the procedures for moving the hardware to a new ...
