In the lifespan of an organisation it’s messaging environment be transitioned to a newer version several times. Whilst this is not a complicated thing to do it does require some level of planning and thought. I’ll be addressing the transitioning from Exchange 2003 to 2007 from a fairly simple view here. Since the general outlines of the process are the same for nearly every situation there is no need for different detailed documents on this. We’ll be working with the following infrastructure in this ...
If you have seen the Windows Phone commercial where the father is in the grocery store with the shopping list in OneNote you have gotten you first taste of the flexibility that can be had with OneNote. I like most consultants have a lot of fires going and once and I am finding that the templates in OneNote are helping me to get a handle on the different projects and tasks I need to track. I started using OneNote to do simply what its name suggests: take and organize notes. Lately though I am finding ...
Exchange is a complex and large product which can have one thousand and one possible issues, one more obscure as the next. The purpose of this guide is to shed some light, where possible, to how things work in Exchange (and outlook), how they can break and how you should approach the issue at hand. Unfortunately it is very time consuming to create a complete troubleshooting guide where every dependency is explained in detail. But that is not the aim of this document anyways. What is the aim? Give ...
A fairly common (and annoying) problem which seems to like to popup after migrations, yet not unsolvable. The key issue here is that there are new users added to the directory but they are not showing up in outlook. Now, if you are like most organisations then outlook will be operating in cached mode. So log in to OWA and test if you can see the new users there. I’m giving it a 99% chance that you will (and if you don’t you have a serious problem at hand!) The reason you are not seeing these new ...
Microsoft Lync Server 2010 communications software and its client software, such as Microsoft Lync 2010, enable your users to connect in new ways and to stay connected, regardless of their physical location. Lync 2010 and Lync Server 2010 bring together the different ways that people communicate in a single client interface, are deployed as a unified platform, and are administered through a single management infrastructure. Workload Description IM and presence Instant messaging (IM) and presence ...
Memory leaks can cause strange and unexpected behaviors in your applications. Of course in this day of managed code we don’t see it as often as we used to and many of us are getting rusty in our skill to eliminate these problems. Recently I ended up with a misbehaving Outlook 2007 add-in which resulted in time spent with Microsoft support. The first thing that came out of that was a way to detect if an Outlook 2007 is experiencing memory leaks. Below is a command line command that seems to report ...
We recently implemented an email archiving solution at work. One of the requirements was that we configure automatic purging of messages older than 6 months in Exchange. One of our IT managers spent the better part of a month moving items out of the only copy of his PST into his mailbox so that they could be captured by the archive system and free him from his PST. For whatever reason none of these messages were captured by the archive system and were purged by Exchange as per the items older than ...
Since exchange versions from 2007 and up put more emphasis on the webservices for use in the distribution of the offline address book, out of office, the scheduling assistant and autodiscover (a.k.a outlook connectivity to exchange) the correct configuration of the virtual directories and IIS components is the main key to a healthy exchange environment. It is for this reason that I have compiled a quick reference as to how these components should be configured in order to function properly and so ...
Several Outlook 2010 users with Exchange 2010 mailboxes reported the following issues. When creating a new message and adding a Universal distribution list to the To: field, they attempt to expand the membership of the DL and they get an “Cannot perform the requested operation. The command selected is not valid for the recipient. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.” error message. In addition, if they tried to look at the ...
Well, since I am a bit new to this blogging thing, and especially tech blogging, I will start out with something light (and known around the web here and there). A simple fix for Outlook 2010 users still hampered an an Exchange 2003 system. It seems Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2003 have a small problem with booking resources on a meeting request. Even though Outlook says it is booked, the resource is not updated on the server….so, here's the fix. You edit the registry. start regedit and browse to: ...
Took the little one to the pool tonight for swim lessons. Okay, Okay. They're not really lessons so much as they are "Hey, here's a few bucks, let me rent out a small section of your pool to swim around with my little one" Saw a dad at the pool. Bluetooth on, iPad in hand, and two year old somewhere around there. Saw a mom at the pool. Arguing with her five year old to NOT take a shower after swimming. Bluetooth on, iPad in hand, work laptop open on stadium seats. Her reasoning for not wanting the ...

Problem: When I try to bring up Outlook it has just begun giving me the following error message "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Invalid XML, the view cannot be load.

I haven’t been able to get my work email syncing with my Samsung Focus since I started the new gig due to some certificate issues. When I try to connect, I’m just told there’s a problem with the certificate. The real underlying issue is that the certificate for my work email isn’t installed on my WP7 device. Unfortunately, this ends up being a manual task that you have to perform, but its not a difficult one once you know what to do. Jerome Laban’s blog post talks about the root cause of the issue: ...

Photo by Vilseskogen “Anazasi pottery objects” under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.0 Generic License The term “going native” can be a terribly derogatory phrase, connoting the prejudiced outlook of colonists toward the peoples on whom they’ve imposed themselves. But it can also be playful or empathetic, summoning images of intrepid travelers who get out of their hotels and try to meet people in the countries they visit, and maybe even eat their local delicacies and learn a few words ...
I had an Outlook irritation that I resolved recently. I have many irritations with Outlook, but the one I fixed was some of the sounds it makes. Every time I viewed a new folder, it made an irritating noise. Every time I deleted an email or RSS item, it made a different irritating noise. With no program option available other than the new mail sound, I went into Control Panel | Sound | Sounds tab for some surgery. Scroll down the Program Events list until you get to the Microsoft Office section. ...
We noticed some very odd, random behavior in our environment specifically with Exchange 2010 ActiveSync and Outlook Web App. Some of our mobile devices had trouble synchronizing email (problems with connecting, direct push wasn’t working properly). Some of our users had trouble connecting to Outlook Web App. Some of our users using Outlook Web App externally were inadvertently connecting to other user mailboxes that they did not have permission to and, not to mention, a serious security breach (I ...
If you’ve installed and upgraded as many Microsoft products as I have over the years, you get a bit blasé and assume that if something bad could happen as a result of clicking “Next” then the installer will warn you. Office 2010 breaks the mould on that one. My home machine was running Office 2007 Ultimate (the kitchen sink flavour) and I recently bought Office Home and Student 2010 (as I can no longer purchase the good stuff cheaply). As usual, I clicked through the installation screens without ...
Several users reported that they could not turn on or off their Out of Office reply using either Microsoft Outlook 2007 or 2010. They did not have any problems turning on or off their OOF reply using Microsoft Outlook Web App. When they attempted to turn on or off their Out of Office reply, they received a Your automatic reply settings cannot be displayed because the server is currently unavailable. Do you feel that your development group too reliant on Outlook? Have you reached a point that you have to search your email for pertinent information when asked? What are you using? I realized things had gotten out of hand a couple weeks ago over a weekend. I was at my in-laws house (in the country, no PC/laptop, no internet connection; and I get an email on my phone that I needed to reply to, but I couldn't send without deleting items from my inbox/sent items/etc. Now mind you, I have rules set ...
About eighteen months ago, I wrote a post covering how to clear saved passwords in Windows XP. This week at work I was reminded how useful it is to not only deleted saved passwords, but to also setup wildcard credentials using this same interface. The scenario that I run into as consultant working at a client site, is that my laptop is not a member of the Windows Domain that my client uses to secure their network. So, when I need to access file shares, shared printers, or even the clients internal ...

That was certainly hard work. Find a solution. After browsing the Internet forums a lot, I decided on the free trial version of Jeyo Extender for Outlook (normally costs $20). Install the Outlook add-on and try to connect to the phone. No joy – although this may be because I didn’t accept a firewall change during setup. I tried adding a port exception for 9035 but that didn’t seem to help. Reinstall/reboot/hack the registry – all to no avail Install the Jeyo product on another machine – success! ...
I have been spending the last 2 weeks immersing myself in a number of Windows Azure and SQL Azure technologies. And in setting up a new business (I’ll speak more about that in the future), I have also become a customer of Microsoft’s BPOS (Business Productivity Online Services). In short, it has been a fortnight of Microsoft cloud computing. On the Azure side, I’ve looked, of course, at Web Roles and Worker Roles. But I’ve also looked at Azure Storage’s REST API (including coding to it directly), ...
I set up my work Outlook account on my Samsung Focus today. Overall, the process was pretty painless and its working as expected (my calendar is updated as well). One small FYI though: don’t dilly-dally when entering the Outlook account settings. As I was trying to set it up, I got into a conversation with one of our network admins. While talking to him, the phone – which was in the Outlook account settings screen – exited out on its own and displayed my Gmail account. All the settings I had entered ...

I ran into a real head scratcher this week. While migrating a very public folder dependant organization, I couldn’t access public folders through OWA. I had full public folder functionality in the Outlook client, only OWA was affected. The environment was still in a hybrid state with production Exchange 2003 servers in the organization as well as DR servers which were using a third party replication package. The exact error I was getting looked like this: I had already established all 2010 and 2003 ...

It can be surprising to see engineers struggle to define work as a project or a task. A team that can't tell the difference is displaying a warning sign that it's lost a view of the bigger picture. Often the team has been focused solely on bug fixes and patches to legacy software. I think the simplest definition is that a project is a group of tasks that add value to a software product. This can come in the form of a new feature or improved functionality. In Scrum, a project is comprised of one or ...
One small but immensely helpful part of BPOS is the Microsoft Online Services Sign In tool, a sort of dashboard applet the gives end-users one-click access to their BPOS services. From the AdministrationCenter site (admin.microsoftonline.com), you can see the Sign In tool available for download in the Downloads area. Simply download the tool, run the installer, and walk through the wizard. This can be repeated on every end-user’s system. The one instance when you may not want to use the Sign In applet ...
One of the biggest aim of BPOS is to help organization simplify management and increase productivity. So what I’m going to show in this post is how simplified it is to setup your outlook client with the help of Single Sing In Tool. Do take note that you need to have at least .NET Framework 2.0 installed in your machine before you can install this. For a start, you need to download the tools from the home tab of your admin portal. Below is a screen shot of that. To start, double click on the icon. ...
I was lucky enough to be nominated to receive the Windows Phone 7 from a representative at Microsoft. The phone that was given to me was the LG GW910. Please note that this phone is not mine, it’s going back in a couple of weeks. The review of the phone below is my personal opinion. Keep reading to find out if I’m actually going to buy one and to see other screen shots. Back to the phone, the first thing that I did was remove the sim card from my iPhone 3G and drop it into the WP7. It immediately ...
We recently switched over a client’s small infrastructure to Small Business Server 2008. SBS 2008 has SQL 2008 and Exchange 2007 imbedded. The customer wanted to keep the same internal and external FQDN names used previously with Exchange 2003. I had them purchase a SAN certificate with all the standard names in an Exchange 2007 or 2010 environment. We installed the certificate, made sure everything was set in both internal and external DNS, and started setting up clients. Webmail and Active-Sync ...
Windows Live has had many lives. It started as a single page at www.live.com, where you could set up various widgets in a tiled configuration. The widgets mostly consumed RSS feeds and the idea was that you could have a home page where the content updated dynamically; i.e. where the content was “live.” I remember when the service was still in Beta and called Start.com; Robert Scoble, then a Microsoft employee, was hawking it pretty hard. It was kind of cool for its time, but it petered out, as did ...

I’ve been syncing my calendars for years. If you’re interested in why I am using Google, then read the history section, otherwise skip down to the how to section of this post. History For past six years or so, I’ve been using Plaxo to synchronize my calendar and contacts between my work computer and my home computer. If you review some of my older blog articles, you will notice that we have seen some issues with Outlook 2003 in our mixed Exchange 2003/2010 environment. Since Exchange 2010 supports Outlook 2003, 2007, and 2010 and Microsoft Entourage 2008 for MAC, Web Services Edition, there are a few things you can do in advance with the different versions of Office as you prepare for your Exchange 2010 Deployment. If you deploy Microsoft Outlook 2010 during your Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 migration, please be aware that Microsoft Outlook 2010 does not use the direct booking code that is used in older versions of Outlook and you have resources enabled to use direct booking.
