Last Wednesday was my last day at the university, where I have been working. I am starting a new job for a law firm, taking a little twist in technology as I move from mainly doing back-end development to a far more user centric environment on a large MOSS 2007 project, which is my preferred space. I have enjoyed my time at the uni, but among other things I will NOT miss the nightmare commute everyday. This is the leaving card I was presented with ;-) And a couple bottles of wine, one being my favourite ...
I am starting down a path with Sharepoint (MOSS 2007), so I found a nice MOSS virtual machine download, its only a 30 day trial, but that'll do for the moment. It's nice that it comes all installed etc, just to get a flavour. The virtual machine is also a domain controller - not sure whether there is any specific reason that relates to a MOSS installation! The image also contains SQL 2005 SP1, Office 2007 Pro, Sharepoint Designer and some other bits...check the above link for more details. Back to ...
I came across an interesting item this morning. I need to deploy web.config changes to a MOSS 2007 farm. After hearing many people including Ted Pattison speak about this in various sessions at the Office Developers Conference, my initial reaction was "Great, now I can make web.config modifications using a SPFeatureReceiver and the SPWebConfigModification class. Additionally, this is discussed in detail here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/... and Here: http://www.crsw.com/mark/Li... ...

*Moved to: Installing MOSS 2007 from scratchI am having occasion to rebuild my Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) development server. In fact, I killed it by adding a Business Data Catalog (BDC) that pointed to a table that had just over a million rows... Now, maybe this would not have caused a problem if I was not using a single server deployment with SQL server on the same box... That's the way the OS crumbles Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...

Andrew Connell writes: Two new Visual How To's I've been working on have recently been posted on MSDN's online help. Hopefully this will help you in your MOSS 2007 WCM Publishing Site development! I was trying to install a feature in MOSS 2007 which has got some Telerik controls (RadGrid, RadWindow, RadComboBox, RadUpload and RadAjax) in it. But after activating the feature which has some pages which use the SonOfSmartPart to host user controls which contain the Telerik controls, I got this error because of RadGrid: [Exception: The control must be placed inside a form tag with runat=server.] Actually I got this error when I started working in MOSS, but I debugged it for some time, then I took ...
*Moved to: SharePoint 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Service Pack 1 UpdateI had a number of problems installing SharePoint 3.0 Service Pack 1 and then Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 1. In fact, I managed to put my server completely out of action and I have been trying to fix it off and on for a couple of weeks (I have been on holiday). This being my only day in for the rest of this year, I thought I should give it another go, as I did not want the server down for another week... Well, I ...
Just solved a problem, and wanted to document the solution. Problem: SharePoint MOSS 2007 Central Administrations site. Select Application Management --> InfoPath Forms Services --> Manage form templates. This runs the page _admin/ManageFormTemplates.... Response is the ever-helpful SharePoint screen: Error. Unknown Error. Thanks, guys. How do I turn on custom errors in SharePoint? And how do I get Manage form templates to work? Disclaimer: `No warrantees, express or implied, are granted with ...

If you're installing Windows Server 2008 RC1 and expected to use WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007 you'll need to wait until 12/11/2007...

It's blocked from running - I read somewhere it's due (WSS & MOSS SP1) December 11, 2007.

The following blog gives a set of steps to allow the smooth migration or upgrade of a SharePoint 2003 portal site to MOSS 2007. (Note only portal aspects covered) 1. Analysis and Identification Carryout a full assessment of existing portal to include: Sites Usage Standard Web Part usage Custom Site Definitions & Templates Screen layouts and UI customisation Databases Infrastructure Evaluate New requirements Out of the box Web Parts provided by MOSS 2007 Extension of existing web parts UI requirements ...
I recently joined a project which automates different processes from a company using MOSS 2007 with Workflow Foundation and InfoiPath 2007 forms. We have the following scenario: create a SharePoint task in a deployed workflow with the CreateTask activity, wait for its completion with the OnTaskChanged activity and then delete the task with the DeleteTask activity. We have to control the timeout, so we tried to use in a parallel branch a Delay activity. In SharePoint 2007, if a workflow has a delay ...
I have been coming across questions regarding how you can show lists in different sites and subsites when using WSS v3 and i have also asked the question so many times before finding these solutions i would be talking about below. The Content Query Webpart could have come up to many people's mind if you are using MOSS 2007 but unfortunately not many of us are using MOSS 2007 but WSS v3. The first and easiest solution is to use the FlexListViewer webpart if you don't need to do alot of customization ...

So, in review of the event logs on the index server of the medium MOSS 2007 farm that my client is using I keep running across a lot (And I mean A LOT) of error events, some with the Event ID of 7076 and some with 6398. I ran across this interesting blog post by Gayan Peiris. Now I am not one to just go on a hotfix rampage, but now that I have run in to problems with the last hotfix that I installed at Microsoft's request it didn't go so well. See my last post. Anyhow, I thought I would just mention ...
I didn't understand how MOSS 2007 knows, to what repository an official file should be send. Well it is based on record routing ('doh). BUT, the 'Title' of the record routing rule MUST be the same as the content type name... This is here and pretty confusing, to me at last. Also, a document will be send to only one document library in the record repository. You can add more routing records that match the same content type. You will get no warning or error but the document will be handled by the FIRST ...
Today is the first day of Pakistan Developer Conference 2007. PDC 2007 is five conferences in the row from 2003. Today I attended the awesome tracks of Naveed Bajwa he is Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVPs) for Connected System Development, today in his first track he presents us the workflow implementation through Microsoft InfoPath 2007 and MOSS 2007. The good thing that I found is demos that he shows in his presentation [increase my practical KBs]. I found a very fascinating feature of ...
It is time again for another issue that I have run in to during the migration from WSS 2.0 to MOSS 2007 to be posted for everyone to see and also how we went about fixing it. If you do much with SharePoint than you will know (or should know) that there is a little command line utility that will do just about anything that you want to do with SharePoint from the command line. Yep, the little STSADM utility that helps you with installing web parts, features, attaching databases and the like is the ...
I gave a talk yesterday on using MOSS 2007 as an Application Delivery Platform. My contention is that delivering application functionality to your users is essentially the same thing as Enterprise Content Management (ECM). Think about it...ECM is all about delivering the right information at the right time to the right people. If you simply exchange the word 'information' in the sentence above with 'functionality' you get my point. If you work in the enterprise space you know the demands of a diverse ...
Well, as promised quite a while ago I was finally able to get this accomplished for the client I am working with. But before I go in to the steps that I used let me re-iterate the situation. My client has had a Team Sites box setup with WSS 2.0 for a while. This was mainly just for the use of team sites for projects and planning things. It didn't support the whole company, but made it possible for a team to work on a project/issue in a central place. The box was never meant to be a production box ...
If you are going to modify the My Site functionality in MOSS 2007, this kit will provide you with some guidance as well as a base Visual Studio .NET solution to work with. Well, it has been a bit again since my last post. But, I thought I would start out with what I thought was a nice surprise. In January I took the time to go and take the Beta exams for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Application Development. I got to the exam and started it up and quickly found out that the test was on the API of the SharePoint object model. I had expected more of a test integrating applications or creating solutions with SharePoint. Now don't get me wrong, I had previously used the OM on ...
It has been a while but nothing excited has really happened to write about until a few weeks ago. I started playing around with MOSS 2007 (Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007). To read more about it: http://office.microsoft.com... I am currenlty looking at the Business Data Catalog (BDC) in MOSS. Martin Kearn give an excellent overview here: http://blogs.msdn.com/marti... There is also a pretty ...
Here is a great post regarding MOSS 2007 and pricing (http://blah.winsmarts.com/... I work at technology company and we are doing lots of development with MOSS and installations. One thing that has not been very easy to examine / describe to customers is the Microsoft Pricing for MOSS. This blog post does a great job with examining what each major feature of MOSS costs and what it means. Also, here is a direct link to Microsoft for pricing ...
It seems like almost everyone is doing social networking outside of work these days. Whether it's MySpace or Facebook or blogs or wikis (or some other tool), almost everyone in the "under 40" realm is jumping on board. At what point will companies start offering this type of functionality for employees? I think that it's sooner than we all might think. Will the kids that are in elementary/high school/college come to expect this functionality to be provided by their potential employers? I really think ...
Is it just me or is this latest round of product releases from Microsoft overwhelming? I mean, just look at some of what has released: WIndows Workflow Foundation Windows Presentation Foundation WIndows Communication Foundation Vista Office 2007 ASP.NET Ajax 1.0 Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) 2007 Web Service Software Factory Smart Client Software Factory Web Client Software Factory And some of what is coming in the not too distant future: WPF/E ORCAS Longhorn Server MOM 2007 The dotted ...
Andrew Connel has written a very detailed and excellent article on HOWTO: Configuring Dual Authentication Providers (AD & Forms) and Anonymous Access for WSS v3 / MOSS 2007 Publishing Site In one go, I was able to configure everything. Over and above this, there is an excellent post by Chandima on How to setup and Configure Forms Based User Administration Feature (Alpha Release) in which he has demonstrated usage of his Custom User Administration Web Part having the following Forms Authentication ...
Recently one of the team members on our Sharepoint implemention what running in to issues trying to get MOSS 2007 area to change to the brand colors for the company. She asked for my assistance because she was in the process of moving to another state and would be out of touch for a week during the transition and the brand colors needed to be done so that she wouldn't have to worry about it when she was done with the move. Anyhow, I am not much of a Style Sheet guy. I never have been, but I didn't ...

Heather Solomon has written an excellent article on how to create and use Custom Master Pages for use accross multiple site collections. One way master pages can be stored and used in MOSS 2007 sites is through creation in SharePoint Designer and storage in the Master Page Gallery. This method will create a master page in the content database. But what if you need to use one or two master page across multiple site collections? For ease of updates and maintenance, we don't necessarily want to store ...

Well, just as I had figured I was beat to the punch at providing the details of the upgrade path from MOSS 2007 B2tr to RTM. But, I do have to say that Shane Young did an excellent job providing the gritty details of the upgrade. Check out is very detailed post for upgrading MOSS 2007 to the RTM version. It can be found here. Happy Holidays. Michael ...
A colleague of mine ran I ran into a bug in MOSS today with the DVWP. i.e. It treates numeric fields as text for sorting (when sorting on column headers is enabled), hence if you sorted in ascending order on the column, the values would be like 1, 10, 11, 2, 3 etc. This happens even though the field is formatted as a number and even when the type is set to x:float. on the sort column. tags: SharePoint, DVWP, Bug, Sorting, Numeric, MOSS 2007 Cross-posted from tariqayad.com ...
A colleague of mine had a problem today where she connected to RSWebParts on MOSS 2007 and SharePoint gave her a security exception. The solution was to make an exception for the RSWebparts assembly in WSS_MinimalTrust.config. The problem with that approach is that you do know the PublicKeyBlob of the RSWebParts to make the exception. How you go about finding a the PublicKeyBlob is to open up the assembly in ildasm. Check the assemblies manfiest, and there will be the PublicKeyBlob in there. tags: ...
MOSS 2007 can be installed as a Stand-alone Server application or as a Server farm or as a Web Front End. MOSS 2007 installs WSS v3.0 automatically. If you have only one server, you have no option but to install Stand-alone Type, this will install desktop database engine (SQL Server 2005 Express Edition) along. It will be an independent instance of SQL Server just for the SharePoint application. But this will result in very poor performance. And can only be used by a very small user group or just ...

I've been scooped... and that is a good thing! I've been working on a MOSS 2007 / WSS v3 tips & tricks blog posting for a coupe days now but Andrew Connell's posting blows mine away! Thanks again AC for a great and informative post!

So I spent my first day at my new employer's and I am not as impressed as I innitially thought I would be. Spent most of the day setting up or trying to setup MOSS 2007 Beta 2. Ran in to a couple of issues innitially. First there was the issue of a concurrency problem when configuring MOSS. At stage 8 in the configuration process, the Configuration wizard it gave me the following error. An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.Admini... was thrown. Additional exception ...

Update (8-14-2006): InfoPath Forms Services is NOT part of WSS v3. It is a separate install, or you can install it as part of the MOSS 2007 Beta 2 install. The RTM version, last I heard, will be available as a separate SKU or as part of MOSS 2007 Enterprise Edition. Assuming you have already created an InfoPath form containing managed code, this document will explain the steps necessary to deploy it to a WSS form library that is “web-enabled” by InfoPath Forms Services. Publish the Template to the ...
