I’ve had a lot of bad things happen to me in my life. The past few weeks I believe have been a huge test I’ve had some problems with my personal life and some natural disasters. I was thinking during this entire experience what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. I am going through something traumatic, but you know what I can survive it. I am an incredibly durable person. When things suck I go into crisis mode when I’m on my own. I believe that what made this possible is all the traumas in my life. ...
Oh No! Not another geek who is going to tell us how to build a virtualized lab environment! We already know all there is to know about this crap! Hah! Yes this is another geek doing this build, but rest assured, it’s not you, it’s me! This is my view and take on this subject, where this blog will function as a “diary” to log my time, remarks and build guide on how I built it. Besides, I’ve built similar environments hundreds of times so I want to add a bit of a twist J. Seeing as my move abroad is ...
MVPs Rob Miles and Andy Wigley are back! Microsoft Learning hosted a Windows Phone 7 Jump Start (plus an update course) last year and it was an absolute smash. Now that "Mango" has made such a huge splash, they have put together another great course. This two-day live virtual class, Building Applications for Windows Phone Mango Jump Start, is specially tailored for developers looking to build cool applications and games for the new Windows Phone Mango Platform. I’m on vacation this week, and I didn’t intend to write a blog post. But after the sea changes in the mobile computing industry and, ironically, my extra time to ponder it, I really couldn’t stay silent. In the space of four days, Google may have effectively taken Android “private” and HP seems to have euthanized webOS in public. It’s really hard to believe all of this is happening. But we can at least have a go at understanding what it means and what might, or might not, come next for Microsoft ...
My Epiphany – Part 1 After reading Continuous Delivery, by Jez Humble and David Farley, I couldn’t help but think “wow! this is the key to becoming truly agile!”. I submit that may be a little overstated, but nonetheless by minor epiphany has grown into an outright passion for enabling rapid development AND delivery of small bite-sized pieces of applications. As we’re all well immersed into the Agile way these days (or, at least, we’re all trying!!), our common goal should be to provide customers ...
Poster-Comment Received a few comments on my Dreams posting and I never realized the posting was that sad/downer. I appreciate the kind words from those who commented. We've all been down a few times in life, kicked in the teeth. The important thing, as you all know, is not that you got knocked down, it's that you pick yourself up, spit out some teeth, and keep going. And, that, my friends is what we all have to do. Spent some time talking to the wife last night, spent some time with the kid, spent ...
Last month at the Microsoft WPC I had the opportunity to see Richard Branson do a live Q&A during one of the morning keynotes. I honestly knew very little about Branson, other than he headed up Virgin – which was, what, a music, mobile phone, and airline company that was also looking into space travel? My education into all things Branson was about to begin. You can see the entire video of the Q&A from the WPC site here, but what was really awesome was the initial intro video that gave a ...

I’m a big fan of client-side development using HTML / CSS / JavaScript for about the past 2 or 3 years – really ever since I dug into jQuery and really began to appreciate the power that the technologies on the client-side possess. Nowadays, everything is HTML / CSS / JavaScript – it’s in all the articles, all the techies are talking about it, and it’s on everyones’ resumes. In looking at candidate resumes or listening to presenters speak about web technologies, we constantly hear “HTML / CSS / JavaScript”. ...
Find myself now in a situation where, for many reasons, it's time to put myself out there and move on. Going back on the job market is a scary propostion. I know that this is something I need to do for myself, for my family, for my career development, for all the right reasons. But that doesn't make it any easier. Right now I'm being plagued with all of the "What If's?" What if I can't find a job? Then I'll be stuck in a job that I no longer want (not complaining, a job is a job, but that's not how ...

I recently obtained a Samsung Omnia 7 with the WP7 OS. Straight off the bat - let me say how impressed I am with this phone and how easy it is to use. It took about 3 minutes to have all my Gmail and Facebook contacts loaded and merged and be connected to the Wifi. Another huge plus is the Zune software. This absolutely beats the ITunes for Windows software hands down when it comes to podcasts. Other pluses included the screen being so bright and the physical size of the phone which is comfortable ...
I just got back from Microsoft’s 15,000 attendee-strong Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Los Angeles, and I have to say, the company and its partners are pumped. How can this be, given the number of people who have written Microsoft’s eulogy of late? If Amazon owns the cloud, if Apple owns the consumer, if Google owns search, if Cisco owns unified communications, if EMC/VMWare owns virtualization, if Oracle and SAP own ERP and if Oracle/Siebel and Salesforce.com own CRM, how can Microsoft be ...
As mentioned in a previous post, I have been accepted to speak at VMworld2011 the week of August 29 in Las Vegas. Since that time I have been working on my presentation with my speaking partner and VMware SE Jeff Szastak. I am excited to be going to this conference for the first time and especially so ...
If the great Bard will permit me an indulgence of his work, I believe the question is: "To work [for a company] or not to work [for a company], that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler...." My wife and I, before having a child, sat down together and talked about our life and child raising philosophy. We both came to the conclusion that the most important thing, for us and for our family, is that we wanted one of the parents to stay home with the child while the child was younger. This was our top ...

To kick off the WPC earlier today, Microsoft brought in Japanese artists New Order. They were fantastic, blending a version of the video below with some WPC-specific shots, and then coming live to the stage to perform a great dance number. The version of the song at WPC was in English, but still sounds great in its original language (if anyone finds video from the WPC performance, please post a link in the comments!) Update: Someone pointed out this video as well, and the performance at WPC used ...

· XNA communication must by default be lightweight – if you are syncing game state between players from the Game.Update method, you must minimize traffic. That game loop may be firing 60 times a second and player 5 needs to know if his tank has collided with any player 3 and the angle of that gun turret. There are no WCF ServiceContract / DataContract niceties here, but at the same time the XNA networking stack simplifies the details. The payload must be simplistic - just an ordered set of numbers ...

Yesterday, at the Wall Street Journal’s “All Things D” conference, Microsoft’s President of Windows and Windows Live, Steven Sinofsky, showed the world a preview of Windows 8 (officially, that’s the code name). "The true measure of a man is not how he behaves in moments of comfort and convenience but how he stands at times of controversy and challenges" - Martin Luther King Ran into a situation at work recently where the Project Manager (PM) responded very poorly to project pressure. Rather than stepping up into that leadership role, he moved into the argumentative, confrontational, and retaliatory mode. The team was very much affected by this poor leadership and by the overall attitude. I, too, fell prey ...

Tomorrow am returning home, to Tokyo. Atlanta has been fun, but it does seem like city where you need a car or seriously figure out the metro. Next years TechEd is in Orlando, I like the convention centre, but it seems to in the middle of nowhere. In Tokyo, I live close to middle of city, with plenty to do everywhere. It's funny, when I was living in England, my passport lasted 10 years, but in 4 years in Japan I've filled up the passport with all the trips, exploring Asia. Actually happy going home, ...
When using the Twitter Search API, the returned posts contain a "created_at" date time stamp with the time set to GMT time. This becomes an issue when using pymongo to store the datetime object in MongoDB. When a datetime object gets stored in MongoDb, mongo (or the pymongo library) updates the datetime object to reflect the current timezone. So in my case, since I live in Seattle, the datetime values get offset by 8 hours. For example, a Twitter post with a timestamp of "12/21/2010 06:07:56" gets ...

It has been a couple of weeks since I last posted about TechDays. Today I completed the final review of all the decks for the Windows Azure developer tracks for Monday and Tuesday. The two code blocks below will calculate the Julian date from a standard calendar date/time. Note that they assume you're passing UT time rather than time that's been offset for your local timezone. The formula used is based on the one in Jean Meeus' Astronomical Algorithms. You may want to add some rounding to the output to limit the number of digits after the decimal point, depending on what precision you can live with. For 5/13/2011 at 14:30:00, the Android version returns 2455695.1041666665; ...
