I had written earlier about the WebMatrix v2 Beta release that happened recently at the BUILD Conference As I had mentioned earlier, WebMatrix is a light weight tool for Web Development, Profiling, Database management, Optimization and also deployment. Its an end to end tool for web developers. Web Matrix is different from Visual Studio in the sense, it doesn’t require web developers to master C#, ASP.NET and other programming techniques. Web Matrix uses a simple Razor syntax and HTML markup for ...
What a week it has been! The BUILD Conference just concluded http://www.buildwindows.com... and there were tons of announcements. This is one of the reasons I am passionate about this company. Even when I was outside Microsoft, the momentum and the focus they have on Developer audience simply amazes me and they continue to do it, years later. Windows Developer Preview BUILD is a developer conference which premiered the first Windows Developer Preview bits. Clearly, the developers ...

It's hard to believe October was the last time I was over here on my blog. Ironically after getter the developer phone from Microsoft I have been knee deep in iPhone programming and for the past few weeks Android programming again. This time I've spent all my non-working hours programming a fun project for my "other" website, Disneyland Inside Out. Disneyland Inside Out, a vacation planning site for Disneyland in California, has been around in various forms since June 1996. It has always been a place ...
Does anyone know of a module for DotNetNuke which allows me to interact with a KeePass data file? I use KeePass a lot and have access to my different KeePass files on my desktop, my mobile phone, etc. Now I want to create a KeePass file which has things my development team needs access to. I would like to store the KeePass file in a location the web server can access and serve up the information through my DotNetNuke site. Any ideas on how to accomplish this ...
It has been over a year since the last time I updated my list of Florida technical communities and a lot has changed since then. Joe Healy, our Florida Microsoft Developer Evangelist, maintains a list for each of the main areas in Florida, but this only covers the .NET-focused groups. Taking what he has started, I have put together a similar list (based on the information Joe maintains) that covers the other technical communities that I know of. If you are part of a technical user group community ...

If you are following Scott Gu’s Blog or simply the ASP.NET Community, you would have definitely heard about WebMatrix and the Razor view engine. More specifically you must have heard of something known as “ASP.NET WebPages” The ASP.NET WebPages, Razor Engine as well as WebMatrix can definitely be confusing for many who have been into ASP.NET Development for sometime now. Clearly, this is not for you, if you are hard core ASP.NET Web Developer and are happy with either Webforms or MVC based development. ...
Recruit Officer: Have you given any thought to your future, son? Forrest Gump: "Thought"? Well, it appears that Microsoft has given some though to theirs with the new WebMatrix Beta. What is WebMatrix? WebMatrix gives you everything that you need to build Web sites using Windows. You download a small installer and then you can select which tools to install. I already have Expression Blend 4 and VS2010 Pro, so I’m only going to take WebMatrix and a DB (MSSQL SRV 08 R2 Express and leave defaults for ...

We'll start with a quick overview of the pattern, compare it to MVC, and then dive right into ...
A DotNetNuke i'm supporting has had a paypal "buy now" button and other variations with custom fields for a while now. About 2 weeks ago (somewhere in March 2010) they all stopped working. Wow, it only seems like just last week I was sitting at my PC trying to determine what I was going to concentrate on in software development for 2009. I had also just started the Frederick .NET User Group (FredNUG) in September 2008 and I was trying to figure out how to get speakers scheduled. Then, things started to quickly fall into place. My local INETA mentor, Frank La Vigne, provided me with a few names of well respected .NET MVPs who would most likely be interested in speaking at FredNUG. (Thanks ...

I thought I would give a list of DotNetNuke Christmas gifts you could possibly buy for a client, co-worker or yourself. You can start with some Christmas skins that you could put on your site. The folks at All Dnn Skins has some skins for you to look at. Snowcovered has an array of Holiday skins as well. If you only want a Christmas skin for a period of time and want your skins to change automatically then you can take a look at PageChameleon which will do that for you. I've almost finished my first Umbraco project, which is probably the most awesome CMS I've ever seen. In case you've been under a rock (which, after having rooted around this thing, I am starting to feel like), Umbraco is a brilliant, ingenious, pure-XML-powered .NET CMS - sorry to say, but much better than DotNetNuke, and fully validates with XHTML 1.1 due to it's XML nature. It supports nested master pages, Intellisense with Visual Studio, custom user controls, XSLT rendering, Web Services and ...
The DotNetNuke web hosters at PowerDNN have put together a nice 3 minute survey to analyze your needs on what version of DotNetNuke that you might need to have. The survey has 3 categories. 1. Website Size 2. Website Usage 3. Project Details With an easy UI of drop down lists, you just answer the questions listed in each category and then submit them to the site. After you submit, you'll get reasons why you should use either the Community or Professional Edition of DotNetNuke. Here's an example of ...

I've been looking at this skinning creator program for $129.95 from Artisteer for a while now and sure enough DotNetNuke skinning rookies will be able to create their own skins and apply them on their own sites. It appears that the DotNetNuke community is starting to endorse this product as well. The product has been out for a while now and its advertised as a way to change your theme using Joomia, Drupal and WordPress. Now, they have added support for DotNetNuke skins and DotNetNuke users have started ...
I had a great time this weekend at the first St. Louis Coders 4 Charities weekend. Over 60 people showed up to create or revamp web sites, applications and networks for nine local charities: Our team ported three United Way web sites to DotNetNuke: http://www.211missouri.org/, http://www.211southwestilli... and http://www.100neediestcases... Wow! Last month’s meeting was terrific! Claudio Lassala’s presentation rocked. Also, the format of the meeting worked so well we’re going to stick with it for the Wednesday, October 28th meeting. This month FredNUG has another great speaker lined up. We’ll start with pizza and social networking at 6:30 PM. Then, starting at 7 PM, Antonio Chagoury will present Mash-Up Your DotNetNuke Using RESTful APIs. This sounds like an informative presentation covering a variety of key technologies. There are several very good DotNetNuke books that are currently available but there are few reviews for those books. Here is how to add a “Tweet” button to your ActiveForums threads, using John Resig’s (@jeresig) “Easy Retweet Button”. I added a “Tweet” button to the header of each post, right next to the existing quote/reply buttons. First, modified the default styling of John’s retweet.js so that the tweet button matches ActiveForums. I modified retweet in the following ways: Set the link_text to just “ Tweet”. I killed the click count by setting count_type to “none”. Completely deleted the “styling:” ...

Today I ran into a problem when I tried to upgrade some Websites to DNN 5. I created my backups of the site and my database as I should do to prepare for an upgrade. My problem was that I didn't follow the proper upgrade path and I tried to skip one and ran into errors. I should have read Will Strohl's blog on this but I found a little bit of time to do this and then had to devout more time to fix it. Ever run into this? Deleted User Login Control or Changed Login and Delete Page in DotNetNuke and cannot login During a recent reconfiguration of a client’s site – we encountered this. Our situation was this: We created a Sign-In page – and under Admin—>Settings – we set the login to use this page. We do this frequently when we stand up a site on a static IP that needs SSL. At some point later, the Account Login control gets deleted – and regardless of why – it does – and our Sign-In page renders a blank login. First ...

Recently I was building a DNN (DotNetNuke) module for a hobby project that I’m working on. We use DNN at PaperWise (www.paperwise.com) as a portal for our customers and our employees. I’m trying to do just enough research into the architecture that I can direct future resources on how to integrate with our other systems. I found a module for this hobby project of mine and, naturally, it stores data based upon the module ID, like many modules do. Because the data is tied to the module ID, instead ...
Today marks the day when the Orlando DotNetNuke User group officially has 200 members. It was a year and half ago that I started this group with about 7 members who came and met on a Saturday morning to discuss issues relating to the best open source web portal, DotNetNuke. Will Strohl was there along with a co-worker. Will has been a great member and now great leader of the group. More recently, Will was in charge of putting together the Day of DotNetNuke held last month at the Microsoft Office ...
So if you attended the Day of DotNetNuke in Tampa, FL last Saturday, you had to notice. There were many females in attendance. I have spoken at many code camps in Florida and you have the typical geek whose overweight like me and has face hair or hasn’t shaved yet toting their laptops from room to room. ...

Kudos to Will Strohl for the countless hours he put in to organize the Day of DotNetNuke held in Tampa, FL today. Thanks to the sponsors, speakers and volunteers who made the day a huge success. There have been a couple of builds already for the new version 5.1 of DotNetNuke. For example, here's the new Admin Settings: One change from the previous build is that Google Analytics is now located here. You could find this ...
In the past, after backing up my SQL database and DNN site, I'd hold my breath when I upgraded my sites hoping and praying that all will be well after the upgrade.
