Scott Van Vliet Once a Developer, Always a Developer C#
IDataReader Extension Methods
First of all -- I'm a total liar. I was supposed to offer up some great insight from Tech•Ed. But alas, I had to leave early and fly to Seattle for a meeting. So, I wasn't able to share any fun stuff :( We'll, I actually have a tiny bit of time to write, and I thought I'd share the result of recent code review. I'm currently teaching .NET (Framework fundamentals, C#, et al.) to some of my clients who are preparing to take over the support of a very large application (we're going on 2 years of development ......

RSS in .NET Made Easy with XML Serialization
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! Based on my previous rants, here’s a stereotype for this post: <<Casual_English_Used... So I was looking for a real quick way to publish an RSS feed from a Web application I created for a friend and found some great articles and components (RSS Toolkit for ASP.NET 2.0.) However, I didn’t find anything that ......

Broken Links Fixed
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! I recently moved to a new host, and being that I'm a lousy housekeeper, I forgot to update the links on this blog that point to downloads. I've gone through my posts and update the links; however, I thought it best to post an abridged listing here: Search Engine Safe URLs in ASP.NET http://www.scottvanvliet.co... ......

.NET Reference Messenger Bot - Broken Links Fixed
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! I installed Community Server 2.0 on my server last night, and it removed my downloads folder, thus breaking the links. I've since re-uploaded the downloads, and the links to the NRB source packages have been fixed. Just for posterity: http://www.scottvanvliet.co... (1.1) http://www.scottvanvliet.co... ......

.NET Reference Messenger Bot - Source Posted for 2.0
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! The code previously posted for the .NET Reference Messenger Bot was built for .NET 1.1, and when running under 2.0 an InvalidOperationException occurs (thanks to Jeff Gonzalez for pointing this out.) I’ve since modified the code to work in 2.0, and posted a separate download at the following link. http://www.scottvanvliet.co... ......

.NET Reference Messenger Bot - Source Code Posted
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! After receiving numerous requests for the .NET Reference Bot source, I’ve finally taken the time to dig up the code and post it here: http://www.scottvanvliet.co... This package includes the DotMSN API (which provides the meat of MSN functionality) and a test application, NRBTest. To get the test application ......

XAML Grid.RowDefinitions Syntax in DataTemplate Disallowed
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! As noted in the WinFXReadme.htm file included with the WinFX January CTP, the preferred syntax for RowDefinitions and Column Definitions is as outlined in the following XAML listing. <Window x:Class="TestApplication.Wi... xmlns="http://schemas.micro... xmlns:x="http://schemas.mic... ......

.NET Reference MSN Messenger Bot Update #2
Ok - I've received a lot of traffic on this service! I came back this evening to a huge log file, and saw that many people were typing in some interesting things (e.g. System.Skillet.Eats.Bologna.) Thanks to feedback from Lenny, we've learned that the service does not work with Trillian - not sure, just know that it doesn't work. I've also added the System.Data namespace to the service's content store. I think this is the start of something really cool. Some possible future features may include allowing ......

.NET Reference MSN Messenger Bot Update #1
Update 2010-03-23 – Sorry, but the images and downloads were hosted on a server that is no longer available. I will try to find the sample code bits and images on a backup sometime! I've made a few changes to this service after recieving quite a bit of traffic. The first version was not functioning properly when dotnetreference@hotmail.com was added to someone's Contact List; thus, I've set up the service to automatically add the user to the service's Contact List (rather than simply allowing all ......
