Disappointed or just expecting too much?

So today should have been a good day, this morning the postman brought me my pre-ordered version of David Platt's new book on Programming Microsoft Composite UI Application Block and Smart Client Software Factory. Yay..... erm not quite.... so first I've not obviously had chance to read the book from cover to cover, I will post a review once I've done this... but I'm disappointed, the book has no mention of extending the base factory.... damn... So what is the story here? is it that the only way to learn how to build or extend factories are by (a) trial and error. (b) the forums. or (c) being fortunate enough to attend a workshop run by Don :)

So just for full disclosure I'm of the (a) and (b) school of learning, option (c) was just bad timing

So what is the answer, well I believe that we do need a forum, but it should be one tailored towards factory builders rather than one that is specific towards a certain type of factory be it Service or otherwise. Or hell would somebody think about putting together a book/white paper/slide deck even on BUILDING Software Factories with today's tooling..... something to tide folks over and get them pumped and primed for Rosario

would love to get some feedback on this, good or bad

I absolutely agree with you! I think I have gone through a similar (and sometimes) painful experience. We tried to (and still do) share some experiences to hopefully make this journey a little easier for our fellow community members. Still, there is a LOT of (technical) guidance that isn’t broadly available yet so there is definitely room for improvement here. So, let’s solve this together ;) All we need is a little time and I am sure you have lot's of it just like I do!

I think you already know we (in our limited form) are doing our level best to get practical guidance for building factories out there on today's platform (geez I wish you could see what we have int he making for this right now). I couldn't agree with you more about the need for a factory builders community based on how, what and why.
I hope that Edward's and my MSDN whitepapers on the broader subject will help describe the high level picture, (although we are still condensing these for MSDN from our blogs).
But we still need much more content from others on these topics.
The main challenge at MS right now is who should host this community (p&p, product group or independent) and which channel? (codeplex, forums, custom?). No good answer to either issue which explains the delay. I am hoping that the wider community can put this site up and allow the community to manage it.

Got any spare time on your hands?
