BT (British Telecom) have got to be the worst company I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.

Recently I moved house and had to transfer the number and services etc, simple enough you might think.  Make the call, give them my new postcode, no problem they say it'll be active on the day I move in.  Tick the box on that job and move on.

Moving Day: Shit, the new house has no physical line.  Call BT, another huge wait in the queue (on average a BT queue seems to be 20-30 mins - they will say less but see why later) only to be told  "Ohh yes" that has failed the line test sir, so an emergency engineer comes out to install the line at a cost of about £250 (i cant remember the exact fee but was about that).  He then says that my line has been disconnected at the "sub-exchange" (I am not sure what they are called but they are found between houses and the main exchange) and it'll be connected this afternoon.  Anyway cutting a long story short(er) it took a total of 3 working days (5 in total - that's another shit deal, how can a huge service company still not operate 7 days?? I'm sure they do but use it to hide behind) to get the line working and numerous 30min phone calls during that time.

Yesterday I get a message on my voicemail that a stop has been requested on my line and it'll be in affect from 6th September, OK?!?  WTF, springs to mind! So I ring them up and get through to someone in another country who a) struggles to understand me b) I struggle to understand them...after about 10 mins its confirmed what I already knew, yes my line will be canceled.  "Well, I dont want that." -  Cancel that stop order and Why has this happened (I am £90 in credit with them because they always over estimate direct debit payments by ridiculous amounts so in 3 months I am £90 in the black! (nice if you can get away with it I spose!) so I know it isn't the money).  I get put on hold for 10 mins (which is a long time when you are sat on a phone) only to be told they cant cancel it, I need to call another number!! Classic!  The other number is closed and only open 9-5. Super-Classic!
Call the number today who then tries to put me through to customer services (the people from last night who couldn't deal with it)....AAAAAA....my head almost explodes, scream and shout, put on hold again, speak to an Irish dude who then resolves the problem completely.

This rings true every time, I think they have people all over the place just answering the phone, they cant help and probably haven't even got a computer, they just answer the phone put you on hold and move you about from unhelpful person to unhelpful person. Nobody takes responsibility for anything in that company until you get the Irish dude who sorts it all out.

The most frustrating thing is that I have no choice...its BT or no phone line (no cable where I live).  I could go with some company that sells me a deal for call minutes but still on a BT line, if I get a problem they tell me "I need to report that to BT and will get back to you".

Tossers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE: The line cancel I mentioned above came into fruition yesterday when I got home and my phone line had been stopped, strangely my Internet still worked but heh...so I call from my mobile (so I am paying) after the obligatory pass round the houses I speak to someone who confirms my line has been canceled, I had to tell me 3 times that I was NOT moving.  He assures me it will be put back on ASAP and I will be contacted today on my mobile.  Of course I wont receive that call but lets hope my line gets put back on - I was advised that would take 24-48 hours to do!! I suggest they upgrade because their current system is somewhat slow!!

I work for BT and can assure we have computers and do take responsibilty for problems, BTW the charge is £124.99 this is a standard charge from open reach! Some companies charge double this and make a profit from customers, we subsidise that payment!
If you don't like it use your mobile and stop moaning numpty

I am not alone in thinking that BT are one of the worst customer service companies around. You may well be different, of course I cannot brand you all but I can only comment on my own experiences. Like I said, when I spoke to an Irish fella he sorted it for me but it took me a couple of very long calls and some voice raising to get there.
As for the cost, if you would like to see the bill i can show you...have you also included the call out charge?
I do use my mobile mostly but need a phone line for the internet...lets not forget that BT called ME to say a stop order had been placed!!!

Steve
I am so, so, in agreement with you. Please also allow me the opportunity to vent.

We have just moved house and by far the most stressful element of the move was dealing with BT. Honestly. I find that incredible when you stop to think about it!

We were told we were going to get broadband, even got sent the leaflets and some sort of welcome pack to the new address. The day after it was due, I rang them to find out what was going on and was told, like you, that I'd failed a line test, but on the basis that they didn't have any spare lines (something I doubt due to the topography of the neighbourhood but there you go). I need Broadband for work and was very disappointed. I then had to deal with BT representatives in India who truly cannot understand my somewhat neutral South of England accent, Belfast, and I think Scotland, many of whom point you on to new numbers which you have to dial again for and, of course, queue.

I was told, vehemently, that something could not be done for at least four months. We were leasing the bungalow for a short time between houses so I forgot about it - until I got our first bill charging us for Broadband. They'd put it on without telling me, a month after the due date, and then billed me for it! No apology from anyone either... Obviously I didn't pay it, but more calls, more people pointing me to the wrong department etc. etc.

I really regret not keeping a log of the errors, inadequacies and flippancy / rudeness I was greeted with. I can understand BT Employer (surely Employee?)wishing to defend thier position but I think he / she should try life on the other side of the fence. I have a whole page in my notebook dedicated to the many numbers that BT have pointed me to in the last 18 months.
I know it sounds like I'm just letting fly (I'm actually restraining myself!), but I can assure you I have not met any organisation that treats it's customers in the way BT does. I haven't found time to do it yet but I've often considered finding out how much their retail business is worth to them in % terms and, if substantial, I would sink as much money as I could into a stock position on them taking a dive - the problem is I think that they have too much of a stranglehold on the UK infrastructure for them to worry. The final straw in the moving debacle, if I can share this with you, was an AUTOMATED call to me to find out if I was satisfied with their service! YES - they won't even pay to have a human find out if their service was satisfactory!

Needless to say I hung up rather than select any further options....

Thank you for your patience. Today's task, and the reason I typed "BT is ****" into Google and found you, is that I've got to find out what happened to a payment I made into my BT Openzone account in July as, I have now been told without any sense of irony by their billing department, they changed their account details last November without telling me, or I imagine any other of their happy customers...

I am an IT Technician, and I can tell you that pretty much everyone who works in the IT industry and knows anything (except the ones who work for BT themselves ofcourse)hates BT with a passion.

I have regular bad experiences with BT when I get called out to customers (almost daily in-fact) where I always have to end up on the phone for hours with them trying to get the simplest of things done, or to get simple needed information that they should have supplied in the first place. The morons on the phone always try to blag their way out of it all and seem to think I'll fall for it! Most of the time they can't speak english properly, have an attitude problem, and don't know the first thing about IT!

I chat with many other IT professionals in networking situations, events, and of course on the job... we all share BT as a common enemy, they are laughed at and despised as a joke by everyone who works in IT that I have ever met.

Awful, diabolical service! Steer clear if you can!

One day people will have other options, and younger generations will be more clued up to their marketting crap, and will be sick of bad customer services... when that day comes, all this will come back and bite BT in the ass!

Great so i'm just not gonna get BB am i? BT twice failed to show up to install phone & broadband, gave me a third date over a month from the original and left a message a week before the new date asking me to ring them if i still wanted it. After 35 min on hold I got thru to a guy who said, after some ums and erms, that there was a problem with my order and that he will have to put me through to sales to place a new one! I coudn't believe it, I've been waiting weeks for BB and really did believe they couldn't possibly not show up a third time! I won't even mention the outrageous call queue times & £35 mobile bill. There service is absolutely apalling and i'm not in a cable area - how the hell can i get hi-speed interent now!? I will never, ever deal with BT again!!!

This is dumb and frustrating on godly level!

Got pushed around by bt themselves to reach someone who can activate my phone line. They say it will be done in 48 hours after the payment. I make the payment and here I am 3 weeks later without a phone line being give the push around again for 3 hours trying to get someone on the phone. They dont pick up at all its so stupid but ironically I tried to get through to the sales and they responded within 10 seconds! that is just disgusting.

BT are the worst company I have ever had to deal with.
If you have a different provider for you telephone calls and use BT for your internet broadband then I suggest you stop using BT altogether as there company stinks, I am ashamed to say they are British owned?
All I wished for was to use there talk plan but I do not have a BT telephone number so this cannot be achieved, this was after being passed from one dept. to the next, I started this morning at 9.00 and finally got asked to phone this number 0800 800 150 after speaking to 11 departments only to arrive back to the original telephone number I phoned at 9.00.
I am now moving away from BT to a company called UNICOM at least they answer the phone within seconds.
My thoughts go out to all who have had and still having problems with BT.

Just had BT cut us of the phone again. We moved - 200 yards - got the business broadband connected (but we had to be cut off for three weeks pay an extra £75 for a network box I neither wanted not ordered - and they have stuffed me with another 12 months contact I didn't want. The domestic phone line is beyond their abilities - or rather sending the phone bill to the correct address- they have -via their India call centre - decided to send the phone bill to a completely different address - and guess what - there is no way of changing it! It seems that someone else is getting our bill! Perhaps I can get them under the data protection act! Seems the guy in India thinks its perfectly reasonable that I go and knock on a stranger's door and ask for my bill.
I too have no choice but BT no cable and no significant mobile signal where we are - just intermittent vodaphone - which we use when we can.
Conclusion BT are heartless inefficient and a rip off. I await a company to take them out - but the lines will always be theirs

well, i made a big mistake and signed up for an 18month contract as I thought they just had to be better than AOL, if AOL hadnt changed ownership Id probably still be with them.
I like the rest of you are sick and tired of ringing numbers and ending up speaking to someone that thinks it my fault THEY cant understand me!!!!Just because they cant understand me doesnt mean Im bloody lying !!! im only just into my 4th month of contract so have another year of Bloody Terrible service, when i first asked about broadband I was quoted a 7.5mb connection, I have since been quoted lower and lower speeds and connections on 2 seperate occassions, the last one being late last night where i was told that i can only expect speeds of "up to 2mbs". HTF can the speed decay by nearly 75% in less than 4months, worst thing is that after watching Channel 5`s gadget program they apporoached bt to see if they would consider changing their wording and were told no..... So we can ALL still be ripped off to their hearts content with the full knowledge that the government knows what ISP`s are doing and seem to agree with them.

I am severely disabled and have spent many nights on the internet trying to keep my mind off of the constant pain Im in and the speeds are always the same,if anything theyre getting worse. I installed and am running a speed tester that tests the connection every hour then sends the results back to computeractive magazine. The magazine is collecting data and signatures to send to the government but we`ll have to wait and see if they`ll do something or spout off a few well chosen words then promptly sweep it under the rug

I work for a telephone installation company, due to the above Ofcom have decided that "open reach" a splinter of the "old" BT is to look after the Lines and installation. Which is basically just another layer of *!1t to go wrong. We use a third party wholesale company to supply our telephone lines (VNetworks) but they rely on "Open Reach" to supply and install the actual line, and yes it goes s41t shaped regularly.

But the general rules are don't try to move telephone numbers.. it rarely goes smoothly.

Order a complete new telephone line and state its for broad band.

Never print stationary until the line is installed and working or use a 0870 xxxx / 0845 xxx/ 0800 number. They are yours.

Don't believe BT's marketing its very good, too good. Have you noticed the TV add that he looks like Rodders, Dell Boys little brother, they probably have lots of engineers called Dave and suite cases full of phones, but customer service is probably better. - and he lets kids surf the web with his laptop. Maybe these are the engineers !

Good to see I'm not alone - particularly like the "BT Employee" comment of "use your mobile instead numpty", simultaneously demonstrating the customer service attitude we've come to love alongside a woeful lack of telecommunication knowledge (how do you think you connect to the internet, idiot?). I've just cancelled my phone line order after waiting four and a half months. It needed a new pole installed as the existing pole is a foot too short apparently. Highlights of arguably the most stressful customer experience ever have been:

1) Them disconnected my neighbour's phone instead
2) Them telling another neighbour that we were stealing their phone line (I had an angry ex-squaddie wanting to know why I was listening in on their calls)
3) BT Open Reach turning up to do the work, but driving away before I could get out the door after them - they then rang BT and told them we'd advised we wanted to cancel the order - had to redo the order all over again after that one

I've resorted to paying for a neighbour to have broadband installed and running the broadband cable across from her house, so I can actually work - something BT don't seem to do a great deal of.

The fact that BT are British sickens me to the brain how such a country could be poinsoned by such insolence and disrespect to its customers. What happened to the British reputation of manners! I recently moved house and actually only just managed to get internet on today, however, now connected i am getting speeds of up to... 300 kbps... that is hardly even much more than what you would expect out of dial up! AND IM PAYING FOR IT! Not only this, but apparently my homehub (the 2nd one) was suppost to be delivered, so being responsible, I waited at home from 8-2 which was the time zone in which they said they would dispatch and set it up and surprise surprise! no one turned up. So i call the Paki Centre, obviously making sense but talking complete bollox to the Indian on the other side and he gives me the answer "Sorry our system is down" Your system is down my ass, more like you have no idea what im talking about as you can't really read english, your reading a script! Anyway, with much anger building up, I kindly asked to speak to an English person, which he gladly accepted, and this english guy was just as bad. Obviously an adolescent child who decided to make a living working at hell, who just says something similar to what the Indian says.
Finally, I realise that i might aswell connect my router and WOW! is connected, so out of talking to people for 1 hour and gaining nothing, I try something none of them told me and its already connected. God, when the guy turns up with my homehub, i am NOT offering him a cuppa!

I work for BT and i'm often the person on the other end who has to transfer your call to another dept because someone has put you through to me in the wrong team. Recently BT's service quality has nose-dived because Ofcom has forced us to use a new system called Oneview. This is the system that all providers use now. We used to have a system called Smart which was perfect. Before Oneview BT were regularly voted best or near best provider in UK. Since then i have had first hand experience of our drop in service standard. If we had our own way we'd still be using Smart and the problems you have all described would not be anywhere near as bad.

Hmmm I only just got off the phone from damn BT. So am still pretty stressed.Right here it goes.....Sometime at the end of last year I order BT broadband (30 quid a month! only got that option because they dont have unlimtied downloads with anything cheaper!)all confrimed blabla 2 days after it was surrposed to come I ring up and they say its not been ordered! no records at all.( should of know then eh) Anyways get the router (without the fone that your surposed to get). Put up with the crappy download speed just for the fact that I have broadband. This month my family have moved out of rented house so I ring up BT and ask them if I can move the broadband over to my grandma and grandads house.AFTER 3 days of ringing up and getting differnt story from every single person I talk to,I get throught to a lady who tells me what I need to do .....which is basicaly cancel my grans phoneline( which comes with a 70 pound charge) also I wanted to downgrade the package because my gran didnt need the unlimited d/ls. " OOOOO thats fine""" I wont even charge you for canceling your grans line! GREAT I say .....YOUR A STAR . Anyways half an hour later after been put on hold for at least 20 mins."Thats all confrimed for you" I actually praised her for sorting it all out aswell :/ TODAY I ring up and bascaily nothing happened everything thats say said to me was bull. The only thing that she has done has canceled my grans fone line which she didnt need to do anyways. So now my grans without a phone, the people who have moved in to my old house have a free phone line to rack up money on and I have been also told that I cant downgrade the package that am on its not allowed.HOW ANGRY AM I! So am got the name of the lady that I talked to when all this magicaly didnt not happen.....but she ant in work today....I have made an offical compliant and tomorrow when she gets back into work her manger is going to have a word with her! Am just hoping that all this got recorded. All I want to do is cancel BT altogether BECAUSE THEY ARE CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rant over :)
