As errors go I found this one is pretty horrific. I got the error deploying a windows service written in .net 3.5 from my Vista x86 dev rig, to a 2003 x86 server. Only having the .NET runtime installed on the server I wrapped the service up in a deployment project. The service installed fine, however when trying to start the service I got a "The service did not respond in a timely manner" error. Initially, like you would, I thought there was probably an error with my code in the OnStart method, but...
On my new Dell XPS M1330 there is a finger print reader, now I have had a load of problems getting it to work on x64 Vista, well the driver was there, but the associated software is not supplied by dell in an x64 version. I did however find the full retail version from the Upek website, that thankfully is 64 bit and considering it cost <£10, I didn't think twice about the investment. I am totally loving it, no more typing anything to login, I simply swipe my thumb across the reader and bingo!...
I have just built a new PC, nothing super special, but pretty nifty. I have gone for a core 2 duo E8200 2.66Ghz with the new Wolfdale 45nm architecture (w'eva!), 4GB corsair ram, Nvidia 8600GT Gfx, WD Raptor 150GB drive and a Gigabyte board. I have read bits here and there about overclocking, but have never really been bothered to take to much of a look into it. Seeing I had some time this week and I had been prompted by a mate to do so I though I would. I started taking a look around the web and...
SP1 has been released to the everyone outside of the MSDN subscriber circle at last. Get it from windows update or standalone download from here. Technorati Tags: Vista SP1...
The final session of Mix:UK 07 was a sneak peeks session. This covered about 8 new things that we can expect to see from Microsoft and a partner or two. The pick of the bunch were (in my opinion): A product called SeaDragon that will be released as part of Silverlight 1.1 next year, its a way a handling/rendering/doing something with high res images so you can use very high res images in your Silverlight app to enable the user to zoom right in and still be clear without having huge performance overheads,...
So recently I have been trying to play with VS Orcas and Silverlight but hit a huge wall. After installing Orcas, the silverlight add-in for it and the silverlight Alpha runtime I still was unable to view any silverlight content, the same "Install Silverlight" graphic would appear. After some considerable google time I found this link from Walt Ritscher and one of the comments did the trick. Basically... 1. Close IE72. Un-install all versions of silverlight runtime3. Delete the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{...
If you are using windows vista on a domain you may find you are unable to get windows updates. When added to a domain Vista adds a registry key (a policy) to look for a WSUS server. I don't know the ins and outs of it but I presume that if that server isn't dishing out Vista updates it fails. So anyway the key to delete is... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software... there is a subkey called AU; delete that as well! Restart windows and set the update going and all should...
After the update to subtext yesterday I decided I would have a look for a new Skin, I am not much of a designer so quite easily pleased (!) but surprisingly I didn't really see any there that jumped out at me so seeing I didn't have anything to do this afternoon and I rarely play around with design'y type things I would have a go at my own...I didn't really plan on creating a "skin" it just kinda went that way as I was changing this then that etc in the custom CSS part of the options tab in the subtext...
I have been having a play with vista sidebar and the Gadget API. I have posted my gadget, source and a walk brief walkthrough of sidebar gadget as an article here -http://geekswithblogs.net/... I actually wrote this gadget about 4 or 5 weeks ago but have just been really busy! Enjoy...
Developing Vista Sidebar Gadgets So those of you who have Vista will be well aware of the sidebar, some may love it, some may not see the point! Personally I like it; I think from a developer’s perspective it opens some great possibilities to enhance existing applications/services and also just to have some fun with! From a users perspective it adds some cool functionality to my desktop! Vista gadgets are basically a collection of HTML, CSS and JS files; with an XML file that is the gadget manifest...
I have had Vista installed for about a month and although I haven’t specifically spent time to find out exactly what’s new I have developed likes and dislikes. I think somewhere on GWB I saw a post along the lines of “What’s all the fuss about?”, I don’t agree with that; from what I have seen at the Vista Developer launch and .net 3 the world of development is getting better in the Vista era! Especially from a UI perspective. So anyway my likes and dislikes (please post yours; I would like to see...
I have been using Onfolio blog reader since I installed MSN Live toolbar sometime ago; its nothing special but does the job. The biggest problem for me is that onfolio stores state offline so when I read a blog at work (during lunch of course!) it gets marked as read but then when I go home I have to mark it as read again....bit of a pain but at the time I had a look at Google reader and didn't like it so stuck it out with Onfolio. Recently I installed Vista and Office 2007 and to my surprise lots...
So, for Christmas I got this great desktop set from Logitech. The most expensive desktop set on the market. Yet that seems to count for nothing as I have now sent this back; the keyboard was fine and I really miss the "laptop type" keys but the mouse had such a huge lag it was almost un-usable just playing with Windows, playing games was a complete waste of time. Now, I am running Vista and the software doesn't support Vista; I did force the install but continued to get error from the bluetooth connection...
So they have released ASP.net AJAX RC1 which is apparently the penultimate release before the fully supported product. Couple of new features... Built in VS 2005 Web Application Project template to create new AJAX application. Additional globalisation support for AJAX applications, improved substitution logic, compression and caching. The assembly Microsoft.Wev.Extensions.dll has changed to System.Web.Extension.dll and the namespace Microsoft.Web has changed to System.Web Two reasons for the change...
After downloading Vista Enterprise from MSDN and finally got round to installing it!!! And wow!! It's really is pretty! a total joy to use. To top it off I installed Office 2007 and am publishing this post with Word 2007. I have had a couple of problems installing it with a few things not working straight away I had to search around for some drivers and my printer software wont install but the drivers are OK. My PC has a rank of 4.0 on the "Vista Scale" out of (apparently) 5.9(?) see more here; next...
