Point #6, while excellent, forgets to mention that that you should also be sure to capture the benefits in tangible numbers and make sure those numbers end up in front of execs when you're done.

Nothing's more powerful than a statement like "Automating testing allowed us to run 3,450 in 2 days with 8 hours of effort, whereas before that would have taken us 2 weeks and 160 hours of effort. Also, as a result, we identified 7 bugs which would have otherwise made it through to the customer"

Instead of clicking on the link directly, try the following steps:-

Step 1: Navigate to http://www.testfocus.co.za/
Step2: From the left navigation bar click on "Feature Articles"
Step 3: Scroll down on the page to look for "Best Practices in Software Test Automation" , Volume 6, July/August 2005 issue and click on the link.

Its always best to suggest that automation should be done on the product/project when the status is more stable in all the dimensions like functionali wise or UI..
