Starting to get the
hang of this. Didn't wake up till 6 today. Lolled around till 8 and
decided to try the place directly across the road for brekky. Was
sitting there looking around and would you believe I notice that the
providers for broadband wireless access are right next to me. Shows
how much there is to take in, I've been right next to them and didn't
even see it. Theres dozens of dishes up on the roof .. Doh .. guess
who I'm going to see on Monday ?? In the meantime, I finished brekky
and thought I would go for a bit of a wander around the corner. 2
hours later I have done this huge circle and found all sorts of
interesting things. ( A rough calculation from my map worked out at
about 6k's .. Shock, horror, if I keep this up I might end up fit ! )
Ended up in Patan Durbar Square which is thousands (OK hundreds, but
why let my bad maths ruin a good story) of years old (17
th
& 18
th century). There where too many tourists there
today and I didn't have any water or much money with me, so had a
quick glance around and will come back another day for a better look.
On the way back, stopped at another net cafe and finally found one
that will let me plug my laptop in. I knew if I found one with a
younger person at the counter they would understand, hence the sudden
huge update ...
Had the good ol
afternoon nap again and decided to get out for a while. I only had
1000 rupee left on me but decided to go to Thamel again and find a
pub. The taxi there is about 150 r each way ( or so I thought ), that
should give me enough for a couple of drinks and something to eat. I
found the Irish pub, so thought it would be interesting to see what
an Irish Pub in Nepal is like, but a game was on and everyone was
glued to the TV. (Pretty much the same as everywhere by the looks of
it ), so I kept wandering and heard live music. It was contemporary
stuff, but sounded OK, so I followed my ears and ended up in this
restaurant / bar on a rooftop. Had a couple of 'Kathmandu Prides' (
vodka, orange juice & sprite) .. couldn't drink too many of them,
but they were nice. Decided I better get head back to the hotel at
about 9ish as I am still not too confident of my ability to find my
way through the alleys there. Luckily I didn't have that third drink
cause heres a tip for anyone who comes to Kathmandu. At night time
the taxi drivers often double the fare. Because I didn't haggle the
fare first, but just hopped in, suddenly he wanted 300 r when I got
back. It's my own fault and I just made the fare, I don't know what
would have happened if I couldn't .. but there you go, a lesson well
learnt.
