Windows Live OneCare

So this was finally released... for $60 a year. That's right on par with the Symantec stuff. There is a demo you can download, if you want to test-drive it first - that's what I did.

From what I can tell, it appears to include:

  • Windows Defender (Microsoft's antispyware app which is still Beta 2)
  • Microsoft Update (hooks right in, and set's up Autoupdate for you...; however, the Microsoft Update link within the OneCare window didn't seem to work)
  • Disk Deframenter
  • Antivirus
  • Firewall (updated for two way... not sure how much better this is then the built-in firewall)
  • Backup/Restore integration (I haven't tried this yet, though I'm probably going to pick up an external backup drive from Best Buy soon)

All in all, it's good enough for me. Certainly since the Symantec crap has gone way, way, way down hill since the Norton days. In fact, I'm so impressed I think I'll be buying it for myself, my brother and my parents. Sure that's $180 per year, but if it reduces my support calls.... :)
