SQL Express, Take 2

With my most recent install of VS2005, I naturally installed SQL Express (again). The first time took a bit of head scratching and playing around to get a database created (without resorting to command line osql shananigans). This time I decided to download SQL 2005 Developer Edition - just to install the client tools.

After everything was installed I found that the SQL Management Studio (is that what they call it now? I thought it was going to be the SQL Workbench) connects to SQL Express out of the box... no configuration needed. Sweet!

VS 2005 Install, Take 2

I have now installed VS2005 Pro twice, and I'm still struck by a few oddities of the installer.

For instance: Why are we still forced to install the J# redistributable? What is this Document Explorer? Why do I have to install support for the Compact Framework (both 1.1 and 2.0)? Why do I have to install support for devices? All of these things are installed regardless of your options... and are not even listed in the custom install options.

What kind of crap is that?
