Nothing was working the next day, so I went in to the local AT&T store (which incidentally still said AT&T Wireless). After standing around a few minutes - it was my turn. I explained the situation to the attendant. Then he asked "What's your number?" Sigh... I have no number [as I had explained]. "Well, than I can't help you. I can't look up your account if you don't have a number. I could call AT&T's support line, and maybe they could help you." Ok, this is where I flipped. Support told me to go into a store, and you're telling me to go back to support?.
At this point the manager stepped in... (talking to the employee) "You could look up his account on the blue side with his social security number." Finally, someone who is customer oriented. I gave him my social... still nothing. My account was just never setup by Amazon. Clearly they screwed up. So I had the guy setup a new account - which required my old Sprint account number so that I could port my existing phone number.
I called Sprint... got the bionic Clara who couldn't seem to recognize my verbal social... so I told it to route me to an operator. When the operator came on the line, they asked me what my phone number (the phone I was calling from) and my secret password. What? What secret password? "My social is... but I have no idea what this secret password is." Once I gave my account number to AT&T, my number was ported within about 3 hours. Sweet.
Ok, so far so good. Now it's time to hook the phone up to my PowerBook. Once I turned the phone's bluetooth on, iSync was able to see it... and do almost nothing with it (no sync with iCal or the Address Book). Pathetic. So I googled around for a mac sync solution. Eventually I found the only option - PocketMac for Smartphones. Word on the net is that it's really, really buggy - if you can get it to work. But since I had no other choice, I downloaded it (which required $38 for the software and $5 for the download - now that's a racket).
I ran PocketMac... which promptly died. iSync (though PocketMac integrated itself with it) continued to not work. But I ran PocketMac on its own... but the phone never seemed to respond, even though the PocketMac app appeared to be doing something. I ran it three times....
Only to find 5 copies of every single contact on my phone. I probably spent the next hour cleaning my phone up, only to find that not all of my contacts were copied over. Great. $43 for a piece of crap. Man, could it get any worse?
