So, my parents don't see a reason for broadband. Dialup is just fine thank-you. Ditto for a commercial-skipping, time-slipping PVR. Ditto for satellite TV (in fact, basic, fuzzy cable is barely working). This state of mind that they live in is a place I like to call a technological wasteland [a place where new technology doesn't enter]... out in the middle of nowhere.
I knew broadband wasn't going to be an option before coming... so I did a quick inventory of what I could do to untether me from their office. My Airport Express doesn't have a modem builtin, neither does my Airport Extreme base station. I even did a quick inventory of my Microsoft 802.11g and Linksys 802.11b wireless routers. Nothing could I had could do it - which basically meant no soup for you! I had to settle for dialup from my laptop... with no wireless. Cruel and unusual punishment to be sure... but what can I guy do?
My surprise came when it only took a minute of looking through my Applications folder on my PowerBook to find Macintosh OSX Internet Connect applet.. and maybe another 30secs to configure my first dial-up connection. Needless to say this would have taken hours with Linux (my experience harkens back to RedHat 5.2 which may have been pre 2.0 kernel)... so all in all I'm pretty impressed.
Not that I would wish dialup on my worst enemy. Ack! Dialup... is... so... s..l...o...w......
