Nine Things Developers Want More Than Money

This article focuses on the motivation factors behind software developement and encourages you to score your company.

  1. Being Set Up to Succeed
  2. Having Excellent Management
  3. Learning New Things
  4. Exercising Creativity and Solving the Right Kind of Problems
  5. Having a Voice
  6. Being Recognized for Hard Work
  7. Building Something that Matters
  8. Building Software without an Act of Congress
  9. Having Few Legacy Constraints

The author believes most large companies would be lucky to score a 1, and most companies in general would be lucky to score a 3, Google being an 8 or 9.

I'd have to give my company a 7, but there is a lot of interpretation that can be read into the questions.  Overall, I would say that it's a really good score.  But honestly, to score a perfect 9 would be hard for any non-startup, even small companies.  (We are apx 40 employees)
