Napster Sucks As Bad As Yahoo

My Napster account has failed again, twice in as many months.  Both times it has been an error acquiring licening information.  The first time it was their servers.  This time, who knows, but the failure has been going on more that 2 days.

I tried calling Napster and waited on hold for an hour before giving up.  I went to their cancellation form which was a help page that told me I had to call to cancel.  No F****** way am I going to wait on hold for an hour to keep them from stealing my money.  Why don't they provide on-line cancellation?  Because they want it to be hard so they can try to squeeze one more month out of you.

I submitted a general help request and told them to cancel.  I will call them first thing in the morning.  If I can't get through immediately I will call my credit card company.

I am done with subscription music services.  I wish I could be done with the music industry.

800-839-4210

Update: I spent another 25 minutes on hold this morning just trying to cancel the service.

Yes, see my previous post Goodbye Yahoo! under Rants. Internet companies have a long way to go on customer service.

I found your site through google ("Napster sucks") and I have to agree. I'm very annoyed at Napster. I'm trying to cancel my account and it is annoying having to call support when it is an internet based service. You use to be able to cancel your subscription online and I have a feeling it doesn't exist anymore due to technical limitations or an evil scheme.

Yes, after signing up for a year like a fool to get the $50 mp3 player, For almost the last 2 months have had hassle after hassle, including the software trying to say I had 3 pcs activated, which was bs, i had one only, which prevented me from being able to activate my new pc, until a certain date, I fought and fought for them to fix it, hours on the phone to be confronted by rude, worthless, lying c/s and tech support. Sent several emails also with no response. I had to send an email in bold letters and lots of exclamation points, threats of another BBB complaint, for them to finally fix it. Now I'm been trying for several weeks to simply transfer songs successfully, I've waited a week for another response after several emails. You have to be firm with these people and treat them like dogs*it like they do to their customers to get anything resolved. I also weasled the fact out of a tech-support agent that they have only 1 call center in Orlando with only 100 employees to handle every subscriber in the US!! I will continue sending repeated BBB complaints until resolved. Napster-to-Go sucks!! !! Now I am locked in for a year and realistically only had a couple of weeks of working usage. I sympathize with anyone having similar issues with them.

I have given up on the whole subscription content thing for now. I have also dumped my Portable Media Center for a Video iPod. The whole iTunes + iPod experience is much better. Maybe I'll post a comparison soon.

Cancel Napster - Almost impossible. Every time I call I get a recorded message that tells me to call back at a less busy time, then it hangs up! Every time I call, I get the same recording. I have now paid for 2 months I didn't want.

Having the same problems. I can't even use my Napster interface any more because I need to reset my DRM backup (or something to that effect). Despite having run the process twice... it hasn't worked.

To cancel Napster online, send a e-mail to support@napster.com informing them since you signed up online, you are canceling your service online (NOTE: you are INFORMING what you are doing… *NOT* asking if this method of canceling is accepted).

Date/Timestamp the e-mail and inform Napster this is an official notice, and further credit card transactions from Napster will be considered fraudulent since the business relationship between you and Napster has been formally canceled (keep a copy, preferably paper, of this e-mail for your records).

Then call your credit card company (just to be safe) and ask them to flag/block any future payments to Napster (they should be able to do this).

Napster may say to call them to cancel, however they have no legal barring over requiring a phone call as the only method to cancel. You signed up for Napster online; thus you will cancel the same way.

If they ignore your request then they can deal with the charge-back fees that will be charged to them through their merchant account (usually ~$30).

Be sure to keep a copy of the e-mail you send for your records (incase Napster ends up charging your credit card and you have to sign an avadavat for the credit card company and provide any proof).

Wow... glad I tripped on this.

I was trying to load Napster since I had a 2 month free trial promo code. After installing the softwware (which took four tries as it was freezing up my computer and required a re-boot) and entering my CC# I was informed that the code was only for existing members. Odd, since on the card is says only for new customers.

I sent an e-mail to the support group detailing the issue as well as commenting that I am assunming no charges on my card will be posted after the tw months since it never fully installed.

We'll see - but thanks for the info - glad I am not signed up for it now.

To bad - good idea bad execution.

I don't understand how anyone would think that for $15 per month and an all you can download policy, that anyone would assume they own the songs forever. It's obvious it is a rental policy.

Hey, What happens to music you download using the To Go service? I know you can't play it on your computer any more, but what about on your MP3 Player? Do they stop working? How would the music "know" I cancelled my subscription?

There is a timestamp contained in the DRM on the device that is updated when you sync. If you never sync, the music will stop working.

I found out yesterday that napster is executing

that was a security violation. All this came from a tech. support person.

I haven't been using the Napster service for months, and only just got time to cancel. I found that you can't do it online, and when I call the 800 number, I get this recording saying to press a number for the type of call... NONE OF THESE NUMBERS WORK! The damn phone hangs up on me! If I don't get satisfaction today, I'm calling my credit card company to stop the automatic payment.

Napster can kiss my ass. Light member, all I want to do is search, pay my .99 cents a song and move on. Sick of hitting 'buy track' 50 g*ddamn times to get a pay window. When searching, another suck is 'back' takes you back to top of genre list, not where you left off. No f*cking way would I pay these assholes one more red cent.. much less even consider a monthly subscription. Say what you want.. but compared to these other sons-of-bitches, MusicMatch was head and shoulders above by a long way...

Well... after reading this I can only confirm. Bought an album and have never been able to play it (and I am not a tech retard)... Service sucks totally. Lucky me I canceled the "Napster to go" subscription online before the end of the trial period of 7 days (even though the ad said 14 days...) This company seems evil to me, like most internet based companies.

# FRAUD NAPSTER !!

Yes, Napster is very very bad news.

Had it one month to download songs to use in my TEFL English lessons, but had to discontinue with so many hassles actually successfully burning to CD. Not to mention the additional costs if you want to then use these songs for IPOD (not supported) or MP3.

HUUuGE problems to then cancel the subscription (I was a UK based customer). Impossible to cancel online, UK customers are forced to dial up a normal (not freephone) London number. My experience at 4.30pm was to first wait 19 minutes (American recorded voice had advised 5 minute wait) before hanging up and redialling. Second attempt (4.50pm), cut off after 7 minutes (didn't even get to speak to anyone). Third attempt it was answered after 6 minutes, and cancelled.

Every stage of my dealing with this online music provided has just screamed out con. In the event of experiencing problems such as I have, I would recommend sending the following email, saving it as proof, then contacting your bank directly to flag Napster as a online fraud. You are within your rights to also lodge a complaint with the http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/.

It is only reporting unscupulous market traders like Napster that will force the regulators such as the Office of Trading Standards to intervene and make Napsters alter their ways.

I haven't had any problems downloading music from Napster. I've downloaded about 40 songs to my MP3 player over a year and a half. I do have a complaint about the Best Buy employee who sold it to me claiming I could download free music (Napster to go) however she sold me the wrong Zen player. Two days ago, I just ordered the correct one (2 players for 40 bucks each) to find that they are offering this player for free with service today. If I hadn't clicked the special offers button I would have never known. This is just wrong.

And I also did not realize Napster to Go is renting music. What's the point of that?

I've just spent 2 days trying to cancel Napster. Seems like there's virtually no way of contacting them by e-mail and have phoned 4 times and cannot get through, just get left permanently on hold. I've ended up writing to them by post, incredibly the address isn't even on their website, had to look it up on 192.com. Napster have clearly gone out of their way to make cancelling an account as difficult as possible.

Just to say Napster are still doing the same, in the UK anyway, and I like the way we pay £9.95 for the same service that the US pays $9.95 for like they are the same currencies. This is an online service isnt it?? Still it is good to know that they are just as bad at everything else in the US, although we pay near twice the price for this lack of service. As warned, their staff are rude, the free trial does seem like a scam to get your bank details, the cancellation process is a pain the backside, and many people once caught, end up paying at least one months subscription even if they did sign up just for the free trial. Many people seem to pay far more than this even if they have cancelled, so would advise following the guidelines above to make sure Napster dont keep raiding your account for a service many wouldnt dare use not knowing whatever charges maybe added. This is near to a scam as it could be while still claimging to be a legal music sharing service. They make those that run torrent sites seem like law abiding citizens. Good job Napster.

BTW most the emails dont work in those lists.

Only support@napster.co.uk doesnt get rejected for UK domains, and support and helpdesk for .com.

Still worth sending just in case Napster starts to understand blanking customers and their complaints will have a negative impact on their service/business.

I was a subscriber for a few years, I read all their information about the services and such, it's not as bad as you people are putting it, I mean you click on Help>Customer support, it gives the phone number there or you can choose the cancellation form on the same screen, they responded within 48 hours of the email(as stated when emailing them it would take up to 48 hours) and asked me to call in, I did so and got through within 10 minutes, the customer support were really understanding about the fact that I wanted to cancel and gave me no hassles at all about it. You all either just tried cancelling on the wrong day where it was really busy or you over exaggerate too much. I don't know how any of you did not understand what the service was about do you not read FAQs before signing up for something that asks for your credit card information?

Don't feel bad. Napster is not the worst. In fact, isound.be is so bad that makes Napster look like iTunes on steroids, crack, and heroin at the same time. isound.be locks you out frequently and you have to constantly e-mail them to remove you IP address from their blacklist. If I can EVER spend my entire balance there, I will remove that site from my bookmarks and never visit there again. Now it seems as if iTunes is enjoying runaway success with no music store, not even Rhapsody, ever coming close to its quality of service.

I took a few months off and hadn't logged into Napster. Was traveling...plus, I got Sirius (which I love)...anyway, logged in last month and ALL the playlists that I had previously put together, I would say 50% of the songs/albums were now "BUY" songs. All Beastie Boys albums, Bjork, Michael Franti, Bob Marley, White Stripes, John Lennon, U2, Ray Lamontagne, NIN, Prince, John Butler....all the music I listen to is no longer FREE!! What am I paying for?? I agreed on a contract when I could listen to everything I downloaded...
Tried to cancel, called the number, they gave me the run around, said I couldn't cancel...I told them they sucked and hung up. I HATE NAPSTER!!

I really don't see where all you dimwitted people are coming from. Ive had napster for about 4 years now and ive had nothing but a good experiences with them. The few times ive had to cancel over finances ect. have been painless and speedy; and the few times ive needed tech support; they actually know what they're talking about. not to mention techs are based in the u.s. too. also for every service you can cancel online ill give you 30 you cant. this is nothing new for a company to verify account info over the phone before you can alter your accounts status. after all it has your cc info on it. and when it comes napster being fraudulent: wtf. if you sign up for a free trial and you dont cancel it. how is a computer over the internet going to know you dont want it? napster is by far the best music subscription on the web. and now that the purchased tracks are in the form of mp3, its hands down the best over the non subscription music sites. after all they have the biggest library.

I have had several years of good service from Napster but something has changed at the that company. A few days ago i began to get a "having problems playing this track" whenever I tried to stream a song. I could download the and play the track, I could buy the track, I could even stream the 30 second versions of buy only tracks. It proved to be impossible to explain this to them. They kept sending me information on how to rest the DRMs. The problem was not with the DRMs it was with their streaming. The last email I sent them was rather nasty. On the next day my password would not work. Go figure. In the meantime I have signed up for rhapsody and it streams just fine. I will be canceling my napster subscription as soon as I have a free day or two.

Hated it! I decided to cancel my membership once I found out I had to sync my MP3 player every month just to get the music I had already purchased and downloaded to work.

Not for me.

Unless you're the kind of person who is constantly downloading music (unlike myself) this is a real inconvenience. Sometimes I don't download or listen to my MP3 player for months at a time. So when I finally go back to my player, I can't listen to any of my songs unless I hook it up to my computer again and sync. Most of the time when I have my player with me, I'm not somewhere where I can just "sync up". It was just completely nerve-wracking.

I tried to cancel, got the run around, but finally got it done. Never again. I download all my music from Amazon.com now. No monthly subscription fee and most importantly: I get to keep the music forever.

Good riddance...

I was even okay with the previous software, but since Napster went completely online I can't even get through an entire track. What am I paying for? All my favorite artists can't even be accessed. Yahoo is an even bigger nightmare :(

yeah ill bet this sucks, but my friend actually recomended me this thing where you download music straight from youtube, its really simple, you download the youtube downloader on your pc, then open the program, the program has 2 parts, a part for downloading, and another for converting. You put in the youtube URL into the program, wait for it to download, press browse files for conversion and select what you download it, then you just connect to what you have, and you drag, as simple as that. There are about 10 different types of formats to convert to
