Know your audience. I’m guessing more than a few Geeks With Blogs readers are also proud owners of Windows Phone 7 devices. If you want to know more detail about the blog content itself, head on over to our launch post. But for this readership crowd I’ll focus more on the technical. We built the site on BlogEngine.NET 2.0 It uses a custom designed theme based on the Metro UI. Want it? Just ask in the comment section! We have not open sourced it yet but if you pinky swear to share changes you make...
Microsoft has announced they are raising the limit of free applications a developer can submit from 5 to 100. But what does that really mean? First, lets look at the reason for the limitation. The iTunes Store and the Android Market both have a lot more applications available than the Windows Phone Marketplace. But that says nothing about the quality of those applications. I attended a couple of pre-launch events and Microsoft representatives were clearly told to send a message. We don’t want a bunch...
I was trying to figure out how all my messages were flowing between FriendFeed, Twitter and Facebook. Eventually that let to this nightmare. I am going to take my medication now. This is why the world will end in 2012. We are "sailing" toward communication Armageddon! Full Size Picture...
My wife and I have been working on a new site for the past couple of weeks. This is our second project since we re-launched our home business. ReleaseWeek.com The site lists major new releases of movies and television on DVD and Blu-Ray, video games, music and books. All of this is put into a simple current week format. This is our first project released as part of the Microsoft WebsiteSpark program. We built everything in ASP.NET Web Forms 3.5. I’m working on a new article on how to create public...
The following is a simple checklist you can use when building web applications. Much of this still applies to other technologies and can easily be extended. I try not to get too specific on technology or methodology, but it is definitely leaning toward ASP.NET. If you can think of something I am missing or disagree, please leave a comment. Detailed information follows the checklist. How much of the checklist you follow will depend on the project. If its just a hobby site, you may skip items like...
Well, the layoffs hit Yahoo. Good luck to all of you and anyone else losing their job in this unbelievable economic downturn. Good grief. Yet another XBOX has failed, this time it’s the new one from last year. The DVD drive stopped spinning up right after the NXE update. Microsoft is footing the bill again and thankfully we have 2 so nobody will have to stop using their Lancers. I made it in just under the 1 year maintenance agreement. But this is by far the least reliable product I have ever owned. It was this same time last year we had failure #3. Technorati Tags: microsoft,xbox...
This is in response to a post by John Viega entitled “Why Microsoft’s free AV won’t matter”. Yes, Microsoft failed with OneCare. But I don’t agree with John on why. (Keep in mind John works for a company that produces AV software, so he is biased, even if he is knowledgeable.) Let’s look at the three major different kinds of anti-virus users. Type A – Anti-What-Now? A large number of consumers don’t care about anti-virus. They might know what it is “sort of”, and they may want to know that their...

I hate that I need to adjust my speaker volume every single time I watch a web video or switch back and forth to music. Every embedded video seems to have it's own volume control that doesn't come close to comparing to anyone else's, if it even works. Does anyone know of a way to get Windows to auto volume level all sources so I can stop messing with the volume? Or am I just missing something obvious here? Microsoft is releasing a Windows Live toolkit for Visual Studio into beta in the next couple of months. Think it will help adoption? Microsoft to integrate Windows Live tools into Visual Studio
Hello Scott, Thank you for writing to Windows Live Beta Technical Support. My name is Tom and I will be addressing your concerns with installing Windows Live Writer on a 64 Bit System. I have contacted the product team about this issue and they have provided the following response: We are working diligently on providing Vista x64-bit support. As stated in the release notes we are not supporting any 64-bit installations for this beta release, but this has always been in our plans for the final release....
Michael Robertson will not give up his fight against Microsoft. Remember back when he took on Windows by creating a more "Windows friendly" version of Linux called Lindows, got sued, and changed the name to Linspire? Well, now he is taking them on with an entirely web based OS. And I guess there must be a really attractive lawyer on the Microsoft team he is just dying to see again, because he is calling it ajaxWindows. Microsoft must be his ultimate target. This is from Michael's Minute announcement:...
I just rebuilt one of my machines to run the 64 bit version of Windows Vista. When I tried to install Live Writer I needed to use the new single installer package released last week. Well, it doesn't work on x64. I sent an e-mail to Microsoft, and they said a lot of people have reported the problem and they are working on it. They gave me a work around but it just launched the same installer with different options, so it crapped out too. The odd thing is, all the individual packages should work on...
So imagine Microsoft releases a new patch for Windows Media Player. You install it and now you have the Zune software. How many people do you think would be pissed about that? When I setup my desktop last week I didn't install iTunes because I don't really have a need for it. But I did install QuickTime and Apple Software Update. This morning Apple software update kicked in and wants to install iTunes + QuickTime to patch iTunes which doesn't exist on my computer. So I thought I would let it update...
The new design looks better. Oh, wait. Looks like it's loaded with the Verizon music and video junk (more ways to take your money) and they have REMOVED Windows Live and Live Messenger. Okay, which one of you Microsoft employees showed up drunk at the Verizon party and hit on the CEOs wife? No word yet on whether the Q will be upgraded like Microsoft was pushing for. I'm in a mobile mood this week. Must be because of all the iPhone hype. Microsoft has released version 2.0 of Live Search. If you have a Windows Mobile phone and you don't have this app, you are really missing out. It's the best way to lookup driving directions and contact information. The new version makes it easy to find movie times and locations along with ratings. For a full description, here is the Virtual Earth / Live Maps blog post. You can download the application to your phone from wls.live.com...
Yesterday morning I posted about Verizon's lack of Windows Mobile 6, and yesterday afternoon, Engadget releases some dirt on Verizon's release of the Samsung SCH-i760, likely this month or next. Just a rumor, but that's a cool phone. Consider this my official complaint about no mention of the 2nd generation Zune. Okay, Microsoft, let's see an announcement this afternoon...
The Blame Game So I have been waiting to find out if my Motorola Q is going to be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6, or if I will be stuck buying a new phone. When Microsoft released version 6 back in February, they made an announcement that phone carriers would get the software free of charge if they agreed to upgrade version 5 phones for existing customers. That was the first time there was a glimmer of hope for us. I can't remember any time in the past that you could upgrade your phone. Wireless phone...
A few years ago I was walking through our local mall on a weekday afternoon when I almost had my pocket picked. A group of teenagers positioned themselves near the food court so you had to walk through them, then one of them would snatch your wallet and run while the others made a wall. One of them tried to grab my wallet, which should have been easy to do wearing suit pants, but it had a button, and no dice. The kid ran off with nothing. The amazing gall of these kids is that they didn't even bother...

Is Linspire getting desperate? They just struck a deal with Microsoft to license code for Windows Live Messenger, Windows Media, and TrueType fonts. Okay, that seems like a good thing. But they agreed to make Live Search the default on their Linux based OS! Linspire has always billed itself as the super easy Linux distro for everyone. I guess they are going to find out if they can make in the mainstream market, because I just think they alienated a lot of Linux geeks, assuming they had some left....
I was checking Google Reader this morning when I came across a post by Download Squad entitled Firefox's popularity is repeating Microsoft's dominating mistakes all over again. But when I click through the link all I get is a single comment: "I don't even know where to begin on a rebuttal for this one..." Did Download Squad get a bunch of backlash and take it down? Or is this just a temporary bug? If anyone else has the full article in their feed reader or browser cache, please post the content in...
I don't plan on buying a copy of Zune for Dummies because I doubt it has much value to someone who already knows how to get videos and podcasts on the device. The rest of the book looks like basic usage instructions. But I also realize I am not the target market for the book. One big problem I have always had when trying to suggest the Zune over the iPod to anyone is ease of use. iTunes is one nice, neat little package where you can get all of your content. If you can point and click and plug an...
I have been trying out Safari on Windows and so far the experience has been miserable. But let me start with the good points. User interface is nice and clean. I can test web sites I am working on without borrowing my wife's MacBook. Now for the bad. Slower to load pages than Firefox or IE even though Apple claims it's faster. Bookmark import from Firefox didn't work. When I maximize the browser on then second display of my dual display the browser completely disappears to somewhere on a phantom...

I bought my first PSP back at the launch. The lack of good titles for several months drove me to want to trade it in. My oldest son liked it, so I gave it to him for his birthday along with a couple of new games. A few months later he also got frustrated with the lack of titles so I bought it back off him so he could get a video iPod. Flash forward two years, my youngest son saved his money for months and used his end of year report card money along with some game trade-ins to buy a used one. The...
The Palm OS and hardware has seen it's share of hurdles over the last several years and tripped over most of them as the handheld market has moved to smart phones. The Treo was an early entry into that market and looked very promising. But was the inclusion of a Windows based Treo the beginning of the end? What to me looks like a last desperate grasp of a dying company comes the Palm Foleo. It looks like a low end, light weight, crappy laptop that's an Internet only device. (How many of these Internet...

Why would someone pay $800 and a monthly subscription for a Tivo? Or potentially thousands on a Media Center, either Windows, MythTV, etc. DirecTV: We tried the new DVR from DirecTV that records local HD over the satellite. And it just plain did not work. Constant lost recordings and system lockups over the course of a few months eventually led us to cancel DirecTV completely. I just spoke with a customer service rep at Dell about the upcoming CableCard support for the XPS 410. While I don't have pricing on the CableCard units themselves, she did tell me that current 410 models are upgradable. Considering you can get an XPS 410 starting at $779 (that's the base $999 model minus monitor, speakers and a modem) we may have an affordable Vista CableCard PC brewing. And by affordable I mean under $1000. Update Dell recently lowered the price on this unit by $100. You can now...
Windows Live Messenger is coming to the Xbox 360 on the week of May 7th. I don't know how useful I will find this, but it's good to see Microsoft continuing to expand the 360 beyond gaming
Visual Studio has this annoying habit of expanding the solution folder tree, especially when synchronizing with Visual SourceSafe. Even without that problem I sometimes find myself with many expanded tree nodes in the Solution Explorer and I want a quick way to collapse them all. So I searched for a macro based solution to the problem and came up with the VS.Net Macro: Collapse All from Captain LoadTest. This macro was not designed to collapse a non-expanded folder's sub items. So I made a few quick...

After about a year of waiting I finally got my invite to Windows Live Mail. (Okay, so I didn't really care that much.) What I got is some awful hybrid between Hotmail and Yahoo Mail. Nothing revolutionary here. Just a forced update to the ever aging Hotmail. Granted I didn't spend much time with it, so if you think you can change my mind, please do so. Unfortunately, this is also the same interface you get with Office Live. Consider using a hosted Microsoft Exchange server. Prices start around $7...

This post is in response to the article "Why Linux will not displace Windows". (I have posted the entire comment just in case it gets taken down from ZDNet.) You are kidding arent you ? Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ? That sounds preposterous to me. If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not...
It's been a while since I checked the state of add-ins for Windows Live Writer, and there are quite a few now. Some of the more interesting ones: Insert Video Insert a video from MSN SoapBox, Google Video, YouTube, MySpace Video, Yahoo! Video, muveeMix and now myvideo.de videos. Usage is easy, just click on the Insert Video link, then copy and paste the link into the text box. Alternatively, you can now just paste the video link into the blog entry and the plugin will do the rest. Now fully compatible...
No Zune? How about some desktop wallpapers. Microsoft has released 2 new desktop wallpapers based on Windows Vista Ultimate. You don't need to actually be running Ultimate, or Vista for that matter, to use these. Wallpapers are in 4:3 and wide screen format
Microsoft has launched a new site, Beginner Developer Learning Center. This adds to, but does not replace, the Express sites and Coding4Fun. Much of the content seems to be copied from other Microsoft sources. However it has been put together in a very clear, step-by-step, learning path to get started. Overall, it looks like Microsoft has done a good job organizing the information. Their target audience, if you judge by the photos, would seem to be kids. And this will probably turn some people away...

It seems Microsoft just can't let go of Clippy. Yesterday I attended the Vista / Office launch in St. Louis, and while Clippy himself did not make an appearance, his dog did. I guess Microsoft just can't stand to have a presentation without some annoying cartoon character jumping around the screen, so we were treated to a dancing Scooby-Doo while we waited. Maybe this is what happens when you bury Clippy in Stephen King's Pet Sematary. If you're into this sort of thing (shame on you), you can get...

A new application, Cozi, has been launched by some ex-Microsoft employees that is sort of a virtual family bulletin board. It contains a calendar, message center, shopping lists and some family picture support. (What no allowance manager?) The only thing that bothers me about these super productive applications with a niche market is that I live by Outlook. We spring for hosted Exchange services and both my...

First Apple posts now Linux. Good thing you can't bet banned from GeeksWithBlogs for this. :) Linspire has announced that it is changing it's core distro from Debian to Ubuntu, another testimony to how well (and quickly) Ubuntu is being received. I've tried both Linspire and Ubuntu in the past just for fun and to see if my kids would take to it. Linspire had some driver problems (audio and 3D video) but was the most user friendly, Ubuntu just worked. So we went with Ubuntu. Linspire: Ubuntu: My oldest...
Dear Microsoft, I understand that you are trying to go for a unified interface for the Zune just like iTunes. But would it kill you to add support for TV shows recorded by Windows Media Center so we don't have to do things like this? In the short term: Please add .dvr-ms support in the next minor Zune software update. It's not that hard and I'm not asking for anything special. Just have them show up under videos. In the long term: Please add a TV section to compliment Music, Videos, Podcasts (you...
I think the guy that wrote this article just woke up one morning and thought, "Let's see how many people I can piss off today." Here is what he has to say about his experience with open-source IDEs. They were slow, flaky and frustrating. I very soon abandoned the Java world – I couldn’t stand the tools, the debuggers were crap or non-existent and the documentation was sparse one-dimensional and uninspiring. There is nothing out there in the open source world that can begin to compete with the fluidity...
REALbasic is a version of BASIC very similar to Visual Basic before the jump to .NET. It has more OO features than classic VB and almost looks like what you would expect Visual Basic to have become if Microsoft didn't port it to .NET. REALbasic's big claim to fame is the ability to run on Windows, Mac and Linux. Over a year ago I checked it out, and it looked very promising. Easy development, cross platform, and has access to web services. But it was missing a critical piece: No ability to create...

Well it looks like Jeff is busy writing a book, so I'll have to take this on myself. Last weekend I went to EB Games to check out the Zune in person. The manager talked me into one I talked myself into one knowing that if I hated it, I could return it. Recently my wife got a new Creative Zen Vision. No matter what she tried, it would not sync video. The computer we were using has had a lot of video software and codecs installed over time, plus we were already using it to sync a Creative Portable Media Center and a SmartPhone. She called Creative and they were no help. They actually told her to try someone else's software besides Creative.
