This is in response to a post by John Viega entitled “Why Microsoft’s free AV won’t matter”. Yes, Microsoft failed with OneCare. But I don’t agree with John on why. (Keep in mind John works for a company that produces AV software, so he is biased, even if he is knowledgeable.) Let’s look at the three major different kinds of anti-virus users. Type A – Anti-What-Now? A large number of consumers don’t care about anti-virus. They might know what it is “sort of”, and they may want to know that their...
When we first started the new project there was no question that it would be ASP.NET. It's what I knew and I trusted it to get us there. I wasn't going to risk a startup by playing with Ruby on Rails or PHP when I knew very little about it. I also went directly to SQL Server for the same reasons. But during the first weeks of development we needed to run MySQL to power some software we thought for sure we were going to need to run. That threw a wrench in the plans. Did we really want to run two database...
Grisoft has release version 8.0 of it's anti-virus software. We run the paid network edition which released yesterday on the 28th. It doesn't look like the free version has been updated yet, so home users and cheap skates will have to wait. I've been running this anti-virus program for years now and have had very few problems with it. Far fewer than McAfee or Norton. It does the two things an anti-virus package should do: Stop viruses and not slow down the system. Version 8.0's biggest feature to...
I hate that I need to adjust my speaker volume every single time I watch a web video or switch back and forth to music. Every embedded video seems to have it's own volume control that doesn't come close to comparing to anyone else's, if it even works. Does anyone know of a way to get Windows to auto volume level all sources so I can stop messing with the volume? Or am I just missing something obvious here? Vongo has published an update to it's client software that works on 64-bit Vista again. Apparently, this was a hot topic based on the number of views and comments I got on my post Vongo is a Mess. You can get the updated software from Vongo's home page
It's time for another complaint post. Yippee!! First, let me say that the Vongo service itself really isn't bad. I wish it worked with the Zune but it doesn't. The only reason I am canceling is because the client doesn't work for me. I may join again if they fix it. I just upgraded to the latest version of the Vongo software and it doesn't run on 64 bit Vista. Not a big surprise but the old client did. I can't find a way to downgrade, but it wouldn't matter much because this looks like a mandatory...
I'm not going to rehash all the details, but the Zune 2 is on the way and all features are being backported to the first generation models. THANK YOU MICROSOFT! Personally my favorite features announced so far are podcast support and native support for h.264 and mpeg4 which is basically every podcast on the planet. (With the exception of you few losers using solely Quicktime MOV format.) I haven't seen any details on the user interface changes or the software changes. Hopefully video will be on equal...
ZuneScene says it's confirmed, but I would still put it at the rumor stage until there is an official announcement. There is a photo of the actual devices, with not much of a change. Just some flash versions and a larger hard drive. Also a cliam that the video display is awesome. No details about software changes yet. Details and pictures here: http://www.zunescene.com/zu...
So imagine Microsoft releases a new patch for Windows Media Player. You install it and now you have the Zune software. How many people do you think would be pissed about that? When I setup my desktop last week I didn't install iTunes because I don't really have a need for it. But I did install QuickTime and Apple Software Update. This morning Apple software update kicked in and wants to install iTunes + QuickTime to patch iTunes which doesn't exist on my computer. So I thought I would let it update...
The Blame Game So I have been waiting to find out if my Motorola Q is going to be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6, or if I will be stuck buying a new phone. When Microsoft released version 6 back in February, they made an announcement that phone carriers would get the software free of charge if they agreed to upgrade version 5 phones for existing customers. That was the first time there was a glimmer of hope for us. I can't remember any time in the past that you could upgrade your phone. Wireless phone...
I was checking Google Reader this morning when I came across a post by Download Squad entitled Firefox's popularity is repeating Microsoft's dominating mistakes all over again. But when I click through the link all I get is a single comment: "I don't even know where to begin on a rebuttal for this one..." Did Download Squad get a bunch of backlash and take it down? Or is this just a temporary bug? If anyone else has the full article in their feed reader or browser cache, please post the content in...
I just spoke with a customer service rep at Dell about the upcoming CableCard support for the XPS 410. While I don't have pricing on the CableCard units themselves, she did tell me that current 410 models are upgradable. Considering you can get an XPS 410 starting at $779 (that's the base $999 model minus monitor, speakers and a modem) we may have an affordable Vista CableCard PC brewing. And by affordable I mean under $1000. Update Dell recently lowered the price on this unit by $100. You can now...
Zune 2.0 and a smaller flash based Zune will be sold this year. The hard drive version looks like the generation 1 Zune, but is thinner. It has a larger hard drive and still uses the doubleshot. The flash based player is video capable and he said the screen covers about 75% of the front, similar to the hard drive Zune. The flash player has Wi-Fi and also uses a double shot. Both devices have completed the design phase, although some last minute minor tweaks to the hardware will occur. Memory capacity...
I think a person's start menu says a lot about them. So show us your start menu! It's a simple Ctrl+Alt+Print Screen. Work Running Windows XP, the company is not overall aggressive about adopting the new OS even though we are a software company. Not running a standard skin (that's the Zune skin). Using IE, not Firefox. Must be a company thing? Windows Live Writer is the top program. I post once or twice a day from work during downtime, but I don't leave the application open. Visual Studio, Notepad...
Their HD service does not work, and if you sign up, you are stuck. It's not the hardware, it's the software, which many people are complaining about, and DirecTV admits is faulty. I think my complaint letter to the Better Business Bureau sums it up nicely. Notice how their attitude changes on the final comment. Even though they told me they would not take back the equipment, they are penalizing me for not sending back the equipment. Complaint Description We signed up requesting a HD DVR that worked...
Zune Boards has released some new software called zSkin that will change the look of the Zune software. In honor of Valentines Day they have started with pink, but expect to see more skins soon
Dear Microsoft, I understand that you are trying to go for a unified interface for the Zune just like iTunes. But would it kill you to add support for TV shows recorded by Windows Media Center so we don't have to do things like this? In the short term: Please add .dvr-ms support in the next minor Zune software update. It's not that hard and I'm not asking for anything special. Just have them show up under videos. In the long term: Please add a TV section to compliment Music, Videos, Podcasts (you...
I think the guy that wrote this article just woke up one morning and thought, "Let's see how many people I can piss off today." Here is what he has to say about his experience with open-source IDEs. They were slow, flaky and frustrating. I very soon abandoned the Java world – I couldn’t stand the tools, the debuggers were crap or non-existent and the documentation was sparse one-dimensional and uninspiring. There is nothing out there in the open source world that can begin to compete with the fluidity...
We are adding a senior C# developer to our team for an ASP.NET 2.0 product scheduled to be released in about 1 year. This is product development, not IT support, with a software development firm. This is all we do. If you are interested, or know someone who is, please let me know. Here is the official description: Mitchell Humphrey is a software vendor located in St. Louis, MO, with a nationwide client base. We are currently seeking a Senior Software Developer in our Software Development Department....
Both items were received yesterday. They were shipped back on the 15th. It looks like all of this mess was due to software bugs. ThinkGeek needs some work on its customer service processes, but they did fix the problem, which ultimately is the biggest issue. So I will keep shopping with them and hope this was all a fluke. Okay, I realize the Zune is not for everyone. In fact, 9 out of 10 times, I would recommend an iPod first even though I own both an iPod and Zune and prefer the Zune. I was sold on the larger screen and subscription music and was willing to give up a bunch of other features to get it, at least temporary. The clock is ticking and I hope Microsoft keeps improving it. Otherwise, a year from now, I'll start looking again. But I honestly think this is just the beginning. But I am sick of false information...
Well it looks like Jeff is busy writing a book, so I'll have to take this on myself. Last weekend I went to EB Games to check out the Zune in person. The manager talked me into one I talked myself into one knowing that if I hated it, I could return it. My biggest concern was Podcasts, which the Zune software has no direct support for out of the box. Here is the solution. First you need some sort of podcast receiving software. I started to try Doppler since it had limited support with Windows Media...
Okay, Jeff here is the deal. You write a post on how to setup your Zune to sync podcasts and I promise to run out and buy a Zune. Then I'll send an e-mail to anyone at Microsoft you want telling them that you personally made this happen, change the tag line of my blog to "Jeff Julian is the Zune God" until the end of the year, and plaster a Geeks With Blogs sticker on the window of my car. Here are the rules: The podcast software can be third party, but no more than $50 to purchase. The podcast software...

While software system analysis is a complex and hard activity, people use it many years, so there should be some patterns and guides. There are a lot of books, some of them very good, most of them almost useless for agile developers, since based on solid Requirements Definition Phase with The Spec in the end.
You'll notice that I tend to favor Scrum.

This article is a excellent opinion post on Microsoft's current and future status as a monopoly.
Recently my wife got a new Creative Zen Vision. No matter what she tried, it would not sync video. The computer we were using has had a lot of video software and codecs installed over time, plus we were already using it to sync a Creative Portable Media Center and a SmartPhone. She called Creative and they were no help. They actually told her to try someone else's software besides Creative.
It was time for a rebuild.

That's an accurate summary, but it doesn't tell anywhere near the whole story. It doesn't tell you that Microsoft is a business empire without equal, that its products are used in nearly every computer on the planet, or that it has yet to reach the height of its power and influence. Microsoft has become a symbol of all that is great about the information age, as well as all that is less-than-great about it.
This article is a very interesting read. Makes you feel a little better about that form validation you forgot to add.
