The following is a simple checklist you can use when building web applications. Much of this still applies to other technologies and can easily be extended. I try not to get too specific on technology or methodology, but it is definitely leaning toward ASP.NET. If you can think of something I am missing or disagree, please leave a comment. Detailed information follows the checklist. How much of the checklist you follow will depend on the project. If its just a hobby site, you may skip items like...
It figures that the week after I decide to start blogging more about work that we would have the most chaotic week ever. Development is an ongoing battle with chaos, and this week, chaos brought a much bigger weapon to the fight. We do weekly iterations and most weeks we not only meet, but exceed our goals, followed by a push into the test environment. I debated about how much detail to go into and decided the specifics probably wouldn't interest anyone outside the company. So here is the high level....
If you are using agile development at all, you need to check out TargetProcess. I have used several different tools for project management and this is the one I keep coming back too. Yes, even you FogCreek lovers should check it out. Version 2.6 is dropping and it includes Visual SourceSafe integration and a new customizable dashboard. Version 2.7 should be out sometime around January and I've been told it will have some new features centered around messaging and blogging. A feature that disappeared...
Oooooooooooooo.... One of the big agile players is now affordable for the little guy. VersionOne has released V1: Agile Community which is a free 5-user version of V1: Agile Enterprise. It has all the same functionality with only the user limit. There is a disclaimer that is doesn't include support, training and upgrades. Upgrades? I hope they keep this product up to date. Watch out when you hit user #6. That will force an upgrade to Enterprise which is $995 for the original five and $500 / user...
DevX is starting a new series of articles entitled Design Patterns for ASP.NET Developers by Alex Homer. Part 1 is an introduction to design patterns and sets the focus for the rest of the series. I didn't see anything in the article that indicated a time table for release of the remaining parts or how many to expect. In the past their agile development series was only 2 parts and was published over 6 days, but their UML series was 6 parts and was published over 8 months. So who knows how long the...
Devx is starting a new series of articles on agile methods.
They are now planning on releasing public previews at the end of every 2 week iteration.
Steve Yegge thinks so. He comes right out and says that if you bought into XP or Scrum you may be one of the most gullable / stupid people on Earth.
While software system analysis is a complex and hard activity, people use it many years, so there should be some patterns and guides. There are a lot of books, some of them very good, most of them almost useless for agile developers, since based on solid Requirements Definition Phase with The Spec in the end.
You'll notice that I tend to favor Scrum.

For a while I have been adding books to the library feed of this site one at a time. Here is a list of books that I currently keep on my “must have” bookshelf. I will update this periodically as new volumes are added and dropped. The Library link list will also stay syncronized.
The purpose of this article is to define a set of ideal practices for an agile software development project. The idea for this article came to me after discussing CMMI-type processes and realizing that there is no agile equivalent.
