IE8 Beta 2 - Extraction Failure when installing
Just wasted a few minutes trying to install the latest and greatest beta of IE8. Kept receiving the very unhelpful message: "Extraction Failed" And then the penny dropped - simply Run As Administrator!  Technorati Tags: IE8,Install failure,Extraction failed...

Two cool Microsoft Surface apps from InterKnowlogy
InterKnowlogy is always on the cutting edge of the Microsoft Platform so its not surprise that we were among first to build applications in WPF, Silverlight and now on Microsoft Surface (a touch screen computer embedded in a coffee table). I'm excited to show you two applications that we released recently. First one is VirtuView - a 3D environment for viewing and annotating patient's examination results on anatomic models. This application is a evolution of our earlier Angiographer that we build...

    Silverlight Cream for August 28, 2008 -- #358
Anna Wrochna on justifying/aligning text, and Ronnie Saurenmann on WCF without a web server. If you find yourself in Austrailia, take a look at DevSTA Challenge 2008... it hasn't started yet, but it looks cool, and great prizes! From SilverlightCream.com: Silverlight and text-align:justify. Anna takes a pretty good shot at getting text justified on a page... her results are very nice, but wow... what a bunch of work! Serving Silverlight applications on client PCs without a web server using...

CRM 3.0 to 4.0 upgrade error
While performing an upgrade from Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 to 4.0, the upgrade installer halted early on with the following error message: Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.ShutdownCrmServerAction failed Turns out that at some point the IIS Admin service was shutdown and disabled.  Not sure how this occured since I had been running CRM 3.0 just prior to the install. So if you get unlucky enough to get this message, open up your services and Enable/Restart your IIS admin service.  The setup continued...

    100 Pushup Challenge? Hardly
So there's some manly competition going around the Geek community.  Evidently Chris Williams challenged Darcy Lussier to do the 100 Pushup Challenge.  What kind of junk is this challenge?  Over the past couple of months, I've been working on both pushups, situps and squats, with NO BREAKS.  I'm up to about 35 of each.  But isn't having all of these breaks between sets of 10 and 15 pretty wussy?  Ok ok, so each of them outweigh me by 100 pounds, and can toss me around like a rag doll, but pahleeze,...

Photosynth = Flickr killer? wait for improvements
Ever since I read about the official release of Photosynth, I couldnt wait to get home and get my hands on photosynth.  I have looked at the beta site 6 months ago and have been wanting to see it live, hence the urge. Got to my home, picked up the digital camera, powered it on, storage full message.  Aargs...  Pam(my wife) has filled the 1 GB memory card with pictures.  She was getting out, so I had to clean up the memory card, backing up all the image to my computer and finally picked up the camera...

    Ever tried Ruby on Rails?
I'm taking this step. This technology has been on my radar for quite a while. Now I'm taking the plunge. I've bought this book that looks really promising on the subject. RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails. I'm halfway chapter 6 right now, and I'M LOVING IT. I have decided to make the most out of this experience, so I'm going to build this application along with the book. I've set up my little SVN on Google where I will keep my evolution up to date. Chapter...

What happened to my pretty optimized code?
Here is a great tool that changed the way I thought about .NET development... wait for it... Lutz Roeder's Reflector (link). Which uh apparently is now owned by redgate software, makers of SQL Refactor (very nice tool).  All right how many people 'know' their language well enough to debate the merits whether it is VB.NET or C#?  Are you thinking the differences between the 2 are too great to start a gentlemens discussion?  Or simply feel your blood boil?  Either way, I am not concerned about pluses...

    1/24 + 1/24 = 2 hours PL what?
I am really, really new to PL/SQL having spent time on DB2/400 and MSSQL most of my career. I needed to manipulate time in Oracle and tried to apply existing knowledge with mixed results. Craziness like having to select from table 'dual' instead of nixing the 'from' keyword like in T-SQL. Weird. This site has helped a lot due its simple examples to help build my confidence. So anyway on to the title of the post... (sorry for the alignment of the code, first time pasting from Toad) I am really...

    Braving Fay
I was surprised to hear that the Jacksonville Code Camp wasn't cancelled. A major tropical storm was coming through the area at the time, but the organizers for the Code Camp weren't going to let that stop them. I decided if they were brave enough to hold a conference during a tropical storm, I should be brave enough to drive into it. Just not in my rag top; we took my wife's car. Friday, my wife and I packed our bags and headed out the door. We were picking Lou Vega up from Charleston, and it was...

What is Software + Services : summary.
Recently I was asked to describe what is understood by Software + Services. To make a big story short, I hereby summarize the key facts about this concept. Not a deep dive article for the hard core developers amongst us, but more a short, kind of elevator-story, summary on the executive level.   Software + Services is the combination of running software at the enterprise (also called on-premises software) and using services (with functionality or for data-storage) that are published on the internet...

Data Dude GDR CTP 16 Available!
Sorry this is a little late.  Two important things about the GDR for Data Dude.  1.  No more design-time databases. 2.  There is now a provider model for databases.  This is how they will support  DB2 when   then GDR is released and how they will also support Oracle in the near future.   From Gert Drapers: The team is happy to announce that we just released CTP16, of the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR release. ... This release adds the following features: VSDBCMD.EXE...

    Visual Studio Optimizations
There are always a lot of posts about various add-ins, code snippets, macros, and other utilities that are designed to make you, the developer, more productive within Visual Studio as an editing environment. However, there seem to very few posts that talk about how to actually improve the performance of Visual Studio itself. Browsing through some of the questions on Stack Overflow, I came across a thread asking this very question. There were a lot of non-answers, but one that definitively listed...

    TwitterMinder and Flickr->Twitter scripts
If you’re an RSSBus user who is using my Google Calendar –> Twitter or Flickr –> Twitter services, you might notice a minor change to both.  I changed Twitterminder so that tweets resulting from Google Calendar entries are prepended with “GCal: “.  I did the same thing with the Flickr->Twitter script, it will now prepend “Flickr: “. Related: How to call these services from your own applications. Related:  How I converted TwitterMinder into Flickr->Twitter by changing 4 lines of code...

Obama's Logo, and a Possible link to the movie spartan?
So last night, I was watching the movie Spartan with my girlfriend, and during one scene, I thought I saw an Obama reference. But the interesting thing is, Spartan is a 2004 movie, and Obama would not have been famous enough to put into a film back then.  On a second viewing with freeze frame, the similarity as not as pronounced as it was when I saw it flash by the first time, but I think it is still interesting.  Also, the prominence of the word Hope. According to this article, The logo was designed...

    <SL2Tooltip Number="003" animationcount<"?" />
I've resolved an issue that has plagued my home workstation for a while. How long is 'a while'? ... I'm not sure, but I'm thinking since Silverlight 2 Beta 2. I'm not blaming Silverlight... I think it's a synergy of some sort between what I've been doing on my MasterPage with Silverlight, and something associated with my slightly older Dell. All I know is after I stopped the Silverlight Logo from continually animating, the problem with my workstation has gone away... It's been over a week since...

    Developer Summit 2008, Banagalore India
Cool!  My Own Billboard! I had the privilege recently to speak at the May 2008 inaugural Developer Summit in Bangalore India. As part of the event promotion, I found myself suddently plastered on billboards throughout the city!  I guess the tag of "Harley Riding SharePoint Guru" will follow me from now on. I have to admit, it's one of the coolest things ever to have your very own billboard! The event details can be found at http://www.developersummit.com.  The conference organizers, the attendees,...

If It Is Not Broken, Fix It
Whoa!  Why does it need fixing if it is not broken? I'd like to explore the definition of "broken".  Here is a modest list of signs of broken code. A test is failing (I know, painfully obvious) The code doesn't do what the user expects. (Likely, you actually have a broken test or it's missing altogether.) The code is hard to read, hard to enhance and brittle. I think the first two bullets are obvious and the customer will see the value in fixing the code. The final bullet...

I came across this posting on Ed Eliot's blog and had NO idea this existed but it made my life a lot easier.  Full credit goes to him on this - the below is cut and pasted directly from his blog so I know where to find it in the future.  The URL for this post on his blog is: http://www.ejeliot.com/blog/63 .box { background: #00f; /* all browsers including Mac IE */ *background: #f00; /* IE 7 and below */ _background: #f60; /* IE 6 and below */ padding: 7px; color: #fff;} I think it...

Stages of Grief and SharePoint Development
Stages of Grief and SharePoint Development I have been teaching SharePoint 2007 (WSS and MOSS) Development courses for over a year now!  Both the excellent Ted Pattison materials and the (getting better) Microsoft Official Cirriculum courses surrounding SharePoint. The development model for SharePoint customizations using Visual Studio is....  How can we say?  "non optimal".  We are coding web pages inside of a class library project.  That's right.  Just sit back and think about that for a minute...

Hot To Properly Schedule a Job on Windows
I needed to automate creation of a job last night on a Windows computer. I was able to find examples of such a script, but realized that they lack a very important part - the ability to schedule a job taking into consideration the Time Zone the computer is in. This is important as the VBScript needs the time zone offset to schedule the script accurately. For people residing in different time zones the offset value will be different and this is also a factor for scheduling a job on computers in different...
