In my blog-browsing on Friday, I noticed a graphic on Tim Heuer's site about Alltop ... I'd never seen that before, so thought I'd see what it was about.
Turns out it's a site that Guy Kowasaki has a hand in that aggregates other people's feeds on many subjects, not the least of which is RIA, which is where I found Tim's blog... oh, and mine :)
I counted 51 blogs on the RIA list, so that's some pretty good company to be keeping. I'm not sure how I got there, but hey... I'll take it, and thanks...
I’ve finished reading a fantastic book by Christine Comaford-Lynch called Rules for Renegades. I cannot recommend it highly enough, especially if you’re a) Currently self employed, whether recently or have been for a while b) Frustrated in your current employment and are struggling to find peace c) Consider yourself happily employed in your current environment So basically I’m recommending it to anyone, because the book is not your typical Donald Trump style “kill them all and plunder their...
It’s pretty clear that Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is here to stay. In fact, use of WPF is becoming more popular and frequent, particularly now that Silverlight 2.0 is on the horizon. The problem is that there has been very little guidance available to help you decide when to use the various UI technologies available. There is however, some unofficial help in the form of this blog post and this white paper. Here is the comparison matrix from Michael’s blog post: WPF...
Jason Allor, the developer behind the Microsoft StyleCop tool has an excellent blog post about the historical evolution of C# code style. The post came about largely in response to some criticisms about the code style enforced by StyleCop and how it doesn’t match C/C++ style or that it differs in some areas with the Framework Design Guidelines. As Jason points out, most of the differences are historical and are there because the of two reasons: The original development team for the CLR consisted...
Alex Golesh on Streaming Media, Michael Washington importing content, Joel Neubeck with Closed Captioning, Antoni Dol with 10 SL2 Gotchas Resolved, Michael Sync on Balder 3D Engine and SL2B2, Mike Taulty building a Photo Control, Andy Beaulieu on Polygon Physics, Expression Blog animating between states, Shawn Wildermuth animating brushes, Tim Heuer on startup parameters, Frank LaVigne with updates to Community Megaphone Map, and Jesse Liberty on new videos.
This falls into the "No good deed...
So I got behind on Battlestar Galactica. Then I decided since I am going to Toronto on business I will treat myself to a Zune and I will buy Season 4 of BSG from Zune Marketplace. This will give me something to do on the planes and in the airports. That was a big success. I was all caught-up and stuff except for the final episode which I watched yesterday.
Wow.
I can't speak negatively enough about the ending.
The pace for the season was strange. The Lee Adama story was strange and, given...
There are still a large number of developers that have both Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 installed on the same machine and probably an even larger number of development teams that use a mixture of VS 2008 and 2005. DJ Park, one of the PM's on the Visual Studio team has a great blog post that explains the possibilities and limitations of using solutions and projects between both versions of Visual Studio. To quickly summarize: Solutions created in Visual Studio 2008 cannot be opened in Visual...
I just came across a post by Michael S. Scherotter about his Outlook macro to create an Outlook appointment from an email message. This is a feature that Outlook really should have, and this macro fills that gap very nicely. I cleaned up the code a bit and made some improvements to Michael’s original version: The appointment type is now set to “Meeting” by default so it shows the participants. The Importance and Sensitivity are now set based on the corresponding property in the email. The...
This actually came out a while ago, but if you like the Consolas font that ships with Vista and Office 2007 you can change the Command Prompt (CMD.EXE) settings to allow you to use Consolas. If you don’t have Consolas installed, you can download from the Microsoft Download Center. In order to add Consolas to the list of fonts available for the Command Prompt, you need to run the following command (run this in an elevated command prompt in Vista): reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows...

Just received a tip the other day on how to get a MacBook to see the USB drives of Samsung and Creative Zen mp3 players as well as other players listed here.
http://libmtp.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=compatibility
The magic software you need is XNJB http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb it's a unix app to access external usb devices.
I don't yet have a MacBook (hint hint, any donations are welcome =)) but thought I'd post this tip for others who might find it useful...
A guy I have known for over 4 years now is going places.
I met Shannon at a contract I was working for a previous employer and quickly noticed that we both had many of the same interests and skills. Since then we have kept in contact and always seem to be pushing each other to one up the other in things like certifications, new technologies, or even interesting client engagements. Recently he came to work with me at Qortex as a Senior Solutions Developer and Microsoft Certified Trainer. Needless...
This isn't quite a Silverlight thing, but it came to 'light while debugging a problem that ultimately began with Silverlight.
Many of us are using WebServices with Silverlight, and what starts out small has a tendency to grow up on us... and that's what happened to my OutlookBar code.
Read the article to see how to resolve the "Maximum Length Exceeded" error.
Stay in the 'Light!

The final episodes of the Avatar were shown in a two-hour block on Nick tonight.
Let me tell you; if you are an Avatar fan, you won't be disappointed. This was simply one of the best series in TV history, and the ending perfectly capped it off. Sheri and I have been watching it since pretty much the beginning, and we've watched the series flow. There are times when we are watching the series and one of us would say "Hey, remember when....". We've loved the show, and thought the series end episodes...
On weekends, I tend to go off tangent, and this weekend is no exception. I started to read some of the works of Levi-Strauss, the structural anthropologist, and it occurred to me that many of the positive changes from Agile Development are not merely the result of greater business focus. Agile also develops culture in a field that is generally devoid of culture.
This can be a stabilizing factor for companies by
- Reducing turnover by empowering team members.
- Creating rituals, taboos, and...
EnterpriseArchitecture.co.uk is my new blog for taking deeper dives into the practice of Enterprise Architecture. Don't worry I will still be posting on GWB but this is an effort to reach out to a new audience who are also Enterprise Architects, this will also be a place for them to get involved and interact as this space will not just be my blog but will grow into complete reference resource. Once I have work it out, I will be starting a forum and letting other bloggers co-habit this cool URL with...

As with most spatial operation, every ESRI - ArcGIS / Mapobjects developer or end user in the GIS world prefer a spatial selection by drawing a rectangle or a polygon. Off-course its easy with desktop application, Try that with a javascript, its different challenge.
I have started working on a Virtual Earth with MOSS project recently and I must say Iam definetly impressed compared to Google earth / Google Maps. I will post another article shortly after this on comparing the two products and my...
I started doing these a few years ago for Tech·Ed (2008 and 2007) and received a lot of good feedback so I decided to continue the series for PDC as well. Session Types This year PDC is offering a slightly different mix of session types with what they are calling “UnSessions”. The bottom line is that UnSessions are everything that isn’t an official breakout session. If you’re still a bit confused, keep reading to see the differences. There may be some other session types once the schedule has been...
It has been a long time since my last post, but I have good reason. I have been terribly busy trying to complete a really cool project for one of my clients. I will post more about it in a later entry, but to say the least it has been quite an adventure.
Anyway that is not the point to this blog. I thought I would put a little ditty together about a course that I am going to be teaching at AmeriTeach here in Denver coming up in September. It is the 50064 Advanced SharePoint Developer course.

Twitter is an interesting phenomenon. I first started using it in April at the MVP Summit. Since then, as anyone who is following me has seen, my use has been intermittent at best. The biggest reason is that I haven’t found a Twitter client that I liked that allowed me to use Twitter in a way that was not only natural (at least for me) but from within tools that I was already using and in front of me. The other day I decided to download OutTwit and have found it to fit almost all of my needs. There...
