How Much Storage Do You Need? (Implied Tag from John)

I started to comment on my friend John’s blog and decided that my comment was too long and what John really did was “tag” me (see this blog post for a good example of tagging someone else (Meme Time: Growing Up Geek)) so here goes, my storage addiction for the world to see:

  • 3TB in my Windows Home Server (2.73 usable)
    • 500GB Seagate (came with HP EX470)
    • 750GB Samsung
    • 750GB Seagate
    • 1TB Hitachi Drive
  • 150GB in my desktop machine – it is a Western Digital Raptor, 10000 RPM drive. I wanted speed not size. Size is what the server is for!
  • 120GB in my HTPC. This is a 5400RPM Laptop drive in a sound dampening case. I wanted quiet not speed or size.
  • 120GB in my laptop.

So in all I have a little over 3TB of storage at my disposal in my home. I probably shouldn’t mention the eight (YES 8!) 300GB drives I have sitting in my closet from a defunct project, the other 150GB Raptor that I’m not using, the 400GB drive I am not using. The two 200GB drives in my old HTPC that I’m not using. ARGH! I need to put all this unused storage on CraigsList!

So John… I highly recommend a Windows Home Server! The main HDD in my desktop died Tuesday night. I put a new drive in yesterday morning, inserted the WHS Recovery CD, answered a few wizard questions and boom it rebuilt my desktop HDD for me! Sweet! I just saw a great deal on the HP EX470.. $369 -- here are the details of how to get that deal as posted on Home Server Hacks. Sure you need to add more storage but that is a darned good price!

So there you have it. I am a storage junkie. As a matter of fact I already have a plan for when I start to run low of space on my WHS I will simply hook up an 4TB external drive array to my WHS. Sweetness!

Next I could talk about how much I am addicted to RAM!! I just upgraded my work computer to 12GB from 4GB and let me tell you my home PC is not far behind! The extra RAM makes a world of difference!
