Dam2Dam Bike Tour Update 2

I rode last night (17.6 miles) - you may notice that the times are a bit slower than normal (okay who am I kidding - you won't notice - but I notice!) because I rode my mountain bike. Why? My friend Brandon rides his mountain bike to work and back and we usually hit the weights every Monday, Wednesday and Friday... so I thought it might be a good idea to ride up and meet him near his work then ride back with him and hit the weights afterwards. It was a good ride other than the frustration of going much slower than I'm used to on the road. It was a good workout though so I can't complain!

I can really use your help. I have set a personal goal to raise $2000 for the Mike Utley Foundation and I don't have much time to meet that goal. Donations are fully tax deductible, of course.

You can donate online with a credit/debit card at: http://www.mikeutley.org/shop/product.esiml?PID=4 - please make sure to put my name Steve Bargelt, in the "Rider's Name" field! If you would prefer to write a check please contact me via the contact form on this site, enter your correct email address and I will respond with details of how to get the check to me.

Dam2Dam Bike Tour Update 1

Sorry for the lack of updates regarding my Dam2Dam training. Please know that I have been riding - just not blogging about it! I rode roughly 55 miles over the weekend! I took Monday off from riding but hit the weights with Brandon. Tuesday was a complete no exercise day. Back at it tonight!

I've been trying to get a semi-automated ride update going and instead of blogging I've been working on this site: http://www.stevebargelt.com/map/index.html - pretty cool stuff. All of the credit goes to Dave Mabe. I saw his article in the latest edition of Make magazine and decided to apply his running logs concept to my bike riding endeavors. All I did was tweak it a bit for my needs. Awesome stuff, Dave, thanks!

My implementation is not perfect (moves too fast, IMHO, I like the way Dave's moves much better, just noticed a couple of typos on the page etc.) but if I wait until it is perfect I'll never get it out there!

On the donation side - thank to all of you who have already stepped up and donated to the cause. I'm up to almost $500 total - still a long way to go but not bad for a week of fundraising! Thanks again to all the folks who have donated - I really appreciate the support.

I'm going to ride ~15 miles tonight - check http://www.stevebargelt.com/map/index.html tomorrow for the update!

HDD Failure in my TB Array Update

I finally the email notification that I've been waiting to receive.

[ORTHANC][1017] [CRITICAL][8/23/2006] [5:23:00 PM] [Controller Group 1] A Rebuild has Started on Array 1.

Yes it took me 9 days to get my main server Orthanc up and functional... mostly my fault. Kind a comedy of errors. See when the drive died I figured that it would be quicker to order a new drive from newegg.com then when it arrived I was going to RMA the dead drive back to Maxtor and keep the replacement as a spare. Well the first thing I did was use a "saved" credit card that was expired. Next fiasco - I ended up re-ordering from newegg.com and I ordered a parallel drive instead of a serial drive. Of course I didn't notice that fact until I had removed the dead drive and completely mounted the new parallel drive. Argh. Yes next chance I get I'm going with a hot-swap case! This was last Friday right before I left for 4 days of camping.

Before we hopped in the motorhome I decided to do the Maxtor RMA and the process was damned painless and 100% automated. Received the drive today, swapped the parallel drive our for the serial drive (did I mention that I really want a hot-swap case?) booted, set the new drive as a spare and boom the array is rebuilding (approximate time to rebuild = 6 hours).

Now I just hope that this was an anomaly - I'd hate to have to start replacing drives. Time to fill up some DVD+Rs with backup content!

SharePoint developer tips and tricks

I've been scooped... and that is a good thing! I've been working on a MOSS 2007 / WSS v3 tips & tricks blog posting for a coupe days now but Andrew Connell's posting blows mine away! Thanks again AC for a great and informative post!

Last week Joel Oleson blogged about the warm-up scripts you'll find on the MOSS 2007 Beta 2 Tech Resource DVD. These scripts essentially force a JIT compilation of all pages in a SharePoint site and run STSADM.EXE to warm up the admin interfaces. These are invaluable, especially to people doing presentations or demons on SharePoint. I immediately modified them for my standard SharePoint virtual machine and made sure they run on startup, as well as added a shortcut to the Quick Launch toolbar so I can quickly fire them off when I switch from slides to demo. For more info on the scripts, check out Joel's post:

It's Not Just Standing Up

The daily stand-up meeting is simple to describe: the whole team meets every day for a quick status update. This short definition does not really tell you the subtle details that distinguish a good stand-up from a bad one.

People who have experienced good stand-ups will generally know what can be done when things aren't working well. This capability is obviously less likely for people with limited experience to reflect on. I've written this paper as an attempt to partly compensate for inexperience by describing the benefits and consequences of common practices for daily stand-ups. These patterns of stand-ups are intended to help direct the experimentation and adjustment of new practitioners as well as provide points of reflection to experienced practitioners.

Dam2Dam Thumbs up! Bike Tour 2006

Okay I did it. I registered for a 100 mile ride on September 30th. Yes THIS year... 2006.

http://www.mikeutley.org/biketour.html I have about 38 days to get ready to ride 100 miles. I don't know what I was thinking - but at least I don't have much time to worry! I'm going on my first training ride today. This bike tour is to benefit the Mike Utley foundation. If you don't remember Mike Utley here is a brief reminder:

"It was November 17, 1991 the Detroit Lions had scored in a crucial game against the Los Angeles Rams. Mike Utley felt he was invincible at 6' 6" and 315 pounds. He was at the top of his game, a champion, and thrilled to be doing what he loved, playing football. Mike Utley was attempting to throw a block during a pass play when he went down, Mike knew immediately that something was wrong. An eerie silence descended over the stadium as Mike lay there motionless. When they wheeled him off the field Mike gave the crowd a Thumbs Up! to let them know that he would return. Mike Utley #60 was paralyzed.

Mike's courageous Thumbs Up! gesture has come to symbolize his fighting spirit. In his own fight to walk again Mike has focused all of his energies towards others suffering from spinal cord injuries. The Mike Utley Foundation was founded in January 1992 and is committed to providing financial support for rehabilitation, education and research for spinal cord related injuries."

Now here comes the sales pitch!

I will try my best to keep daily updates pumping out to my blog with information on how my training is progressing and how my fund raising efforts are coming along.

Did You Know?

  • There are approximately two million people worldwide living with spinal cord injury; 11,000 new injuries are reported every year in the US with a new injury occurring every 48 minutes.
  • Lifetime costs incurred by SCI individuals average $900,000 and can reach as high as $2.7 million depending on the level of injury.
  • Vehicular accidents cause 50.4% of these spinal cord injuries. one-quarter 11.2% are the result of violence and 23.8% are the result of falls. Sports injuries account for 9.0% of these injuries. the remaining 5.6% of spinal cord injuries result from work related or other accidents.
  • More than half (55%) of the SCI population was injured between the ages of 16 and 30. 80% of SCI individuals are male and approximately half (47%) are married at time of injury. 10 years after spinal cord injury, 58.1% are unemployed.
  • The nation currently invests less than 1% of the costs of spinal cord injury into research that has the potential to restore function and substantially reduce the costs. Current annual costs of injuries: $9.7 billion; current research investments: less than $100 million from all sources- Federal, industry, foundation, and private donations.

HDD Failure in my 2TB Array!

I hate Mondays. This past Monday was no exception. I did the usual morning routine then logged onto email before stating the day. Here is the body of four messages that I did not want to receive:

[ORTHANC][1047] [WARNING][8/13/2006] [2:16:38 AM] [Controller Group 1] Medium error on controller 0 channel 3.
[ORTHANC][1050] [WARNING][8/13/2006] [2:16:48 AM] [Controller Group 1] BBR second attempt failed, controller 0 channel 3.
[ORTHANC][1013] [CRITICAL][8/13/2006] [2:16:59 AM] [Controller Group 1] Drive failed on controller 0 channel 3.
[ORTHANC][1015] [CRITICAL][8/13/2006] [2:17:04 AM] [Controller Group 1] Array 1 has gone critical.

Wow a whole 26 seconds between Medium error and my array going critical. That sucks. Orthanc is my terabyte server that has 8 300Gb drives in RAID 5. My whole digital life is on that array! Thankfully my data is safe as long as another drive does not fail. Not wanting to take any chances I shut the box down and promptly ordered a new drive (w/ next-day air) through NewEgg.com. Simple enough... except that I used an expired card that was stored with NewEgg to pay for the drive so after clearing that up I won't be receiving the new drive until tomorrow. I'll post more about the swap-out process and eventually the Maxtor RMA process once I get to that point.

Update: What's On My Dev Workstation

It has been roughly 16 months since I originally posted my "What's On My Development Workstation" blog entry and the follow-up article. I thought it was time for an update. http://geekswithblogs.net/sbargelt/articles/39665.aspx

As you can see I've simplified my life somewhat. I only use one development machine now (my laptop) and I no longer maintain a .Net 1.1 / Visual Studio 2003 environment. I do all of my development in a virtual machine.

One thing that is not captured in this table is my server environment. Currently I'm hosting five virtual servers on Orthanc using Microsoft Virtual Server R2 64bit. Team Foundation Server, MOSS, DB (SQL 2000 and 2005), SCC (Perforce and Cruise Control.Net), media server (has various media serving software packages installed).

Via <charliedigital />

So this afternoon, I received an email from Kevin Downs (as I'm on his mailing list), the developer of NDoc with the following: I have decided to discontinue work on NDoc 2.0 and no longer participate in any open-source development work.

Blog by Joel Fjordén a.k.a. Will o Wisp - Code Style Enforcer

Code Style Enforcer is a DXCore plug-in for Visual Studio that checks the code against a configurable code standard and best practices. It is developed for C#, but some of the rules will also work for VB .NET, though not tested. The code standard is currently configurable with the following rules:
• Name rules, where it is possible to have different rules for different members, i.e. fields, constants, variables, methods, properties and so on.
• Visibility rules, where you can specify the visibility that is valid for different members. It is also possible to specify that the visibility has to be specified explicitly.
• Implementation rules, where it is possible to specify that interface implementations are to be made explicitly or implicitly.
