Fun & Games–Microsoft’s new AoE Online
As most of you know, Microsoft gives MVP awardees access to some great benefits. I’ll admit, this is the first time I’ve used it to have access to something fun and non-work related. While I only had the opportunity to play it twice (it’s just hard to find the time to play games), the new Age of Empires Online game is quite interesting. I was able to play it during it’s Alpha stage, and it’s now hit the closed Beta stage, which we’ve been encouraged to invite people to apply for. http://www.ageofempiresonli... ......

Microsoft LightSwitch
http://www.microsoft.com/vi... Finally, I can blog about this interesting piece of technology from Microsoft. For beginner to intermediate developers (1-4 years), this piece of technology will WOW you. I’ll admit, how can you not be impressed by pointing to a database, saying “alakazam”, click a couple of buttons, and blammo, you have your own application! But after having been around the block a few times, I’m actually a little critical of this tool (which is rare). We’ve ......

Microsoft’s new technical computing initiative
I made a mental note from earlier in the year. Microsoft literally buys computers by the truckload. From what I understand, it’s a typical practice amongst large software vendors. You plug a few wires in, you test it, and you instantly have mega tera tera flops (don’t hold me to that number). Microsoft has been trying to plug away at their cloud services (named Azure). Which, for the layman, means Microsoft runs your software on their computers, and as demand increases you can allocate more computing ......

How ReSharper saved the day
The Back Story: As a Microsoft MVP awardee, one of the many benefits is free software, books, and various products. Some of the producers/manufacturers ask for reviews in exchange, others just ask for a brief mention (nothing is ever really free). But considering that some of the products are essential to my everyday computing, I never mind mentioning their names and evangelizing their products. One of these tools just happened to save me a countless number of hours. With the release of Microsoft’s ......

While it’s still a full month away, I’m getting super excited about my upcoming trips. May and June are chock full of events, two of which I’ll have full announcements for within the week. In mid May I’ll be driving to Dallas to take my 2nd trip to Korea (the bulgogi part). Seeing a bunch of old friends from my first trip as well as taking a week for some deeper personal things. Steve Ballmer’s recent CEO letter – Do More with Less
The following is Steve Ballmer’s recent letter to CEOs titled ‘The New Efficiency’. In all the talk about the economy, one term that comes up more and more frequently is something called "the new normal." I like this phrase because it speaks to the fact that economic reality has undergone a fundamental shift over the course of the past 12 months. So what is the nature of this shift? After years of economic expansion fueled by unrealistic rates of consumption and unsustainable levels of private debt, ......

Congratulations & Thanks to Scott Spradlin
Scott Spradlin, one of most influential people I know in the world of Microsoft programming, has gone way too long without being recognized. I remember having talked with Scott on many occasions about user groups and Ineta. Microsoft no longer marketing Windows Live OneCare
Just received an e-mail that as of Nov 23, 2008 (below), Microsoft will no longer be marketing Windows Live OneCare. It’s unknown what that means, other than them closing the affiliate program (where marketers get paid if you install it). It is unreasonable that they will discontinue the product, since they have just launched Small Business Server 2008 and Windows Live OneCare Server. I’m wondering if the marketing department that was contracted, was fired. Windows Live OneCare to Close November ......

Nashville devLink Recap
One of the most interesting things about being a software developer is to see the entire undercurrent and subculture of the industry. It really makes it more visible at the local geek gatherings, regional and national conferences. August 22-23 For those that don't know, devLink in Nashville is one of the best (if not THE best) community driven conferences out there. I'm super excited to have been invited by John Kellar to host a couple of the Open Spaces sessions. If you haven't gotten a chance to know John, he's a super guy and is helping to put on other conferences as well. So while devLink may be sold out this year, be sure to sign up early next year! Microsoft congregates it's ads under one flag "Microsoft Advertising"
Exactly two months ago Microsoft sent me an email introducing it's new branding called "Microsoft Advertising" (note that the page is presently erroring out). Personally I think the new branding is a step forward, as I never cared for "AdCenter". But the really interesting parts of the e-mail was the brief mention to a host of products I've never heard about. As with their ongoing issues, let us see if Microsoft can get the execution right. Atlas is their rich media advertising. I'm guessing this ......

NBC Olympics site goes live with Silverlight 2 streaming
Over the past year, Microsoft has broadly touted their partnership with NBC and the video feeds they will provide for the Olympics. So on July 4th, I sat back and while watching their TV broadcast and went over to their website http://www.nbcolympics.com. Growing your software business, stuck in a rut
The following is a response to the forum question posted here. It was this time last year at TechEd that Cory Smith introduced me to the Visual Basic product team. He first introduced me to Ed Hickey, who is the VB MVP Lead at Microsoft. Microsoft adCenter needs a workshop?
While I love Microsoft's developer products, adCenter (Microsoft's search advertising / pay per click) makes me want to hide in shame. See the email I received below. I completely understand the desire of AdCenter to educate the masses, but do you really need a Workshop to get your customers to understand your product? Much less, require them to PAY to attend? SQL Server Reporting Services Licensing Info
After presenting at the Tulsa SQL Server SIG I received the following question: According to all the blogs if you install SSRS on a web server it still burns up another SQL server license even if you don’t install SQL. Our production SQL server costs like $30,000 for the enterprise version because it’s on an 8 core box. The SharePoint server where I am trying to install SSRS also has 8 cores. Microsoft kills off adCenter Affiliate program (paid referrals to their advertising engine)
I received an e-mail (copied below) about Microsoft ending the paid referrals to new subscribers of adCenter. I find this extremely perplexing because of Google's dominance in this area, plus Microsoft's bid for Yahoo!. Watch Bill Gates keynote at CES 2008 in Silverlight
I'm impressed by the fact that they used Silverlight to highlight Bill Gates keynote and Microsoft at CES. Note that the intro is a bit long before they actually let him speak. If you'll notice at the bottom, they included all of the tags for their products they are highlighting. The only logo I questioned was Microsoft Office. How in the world is Office linked to entertainment? I think my favorite bit was about Microsoft Bob http://www.microsoft.com/ces/ Technorati Tags: Microsoft,Bill Gates,CES ......

Free Partner Training - Windows Server 2008 for Developers
As I've mentioned countless number of times, one of the best benefits of the Partner Program is training. In this case it's free training. Two days full of instructor led training for free, however right now it's only in 3 cities. Topics covered: IIS 7 PowerShell and MMC 3.0 Software Licensing and Protection Services (SLP Services) - one of the more interesting topics rarely heard about WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) or WWF (Windows Workflow Foundation) Dates are as follows: (whomever in ......

Microsoft Changes Satisfaction Index in Partner Program
Just received information that details the changes of the Microsoft Satisfaction Index. The MSDN Flash e-Newsletter has been updated with a reorganization of the way it is laid out. Intuit tells you to Join the Entrepreneurial Revolution
While doing my normal routine and checking out Facebook this morning, I happened to come across the What Kind of Entrepreneur Are You? Quiz. Of course I had to take it, even though I was somewhat worried it would tell me "You have no entrepreneurial skills, get out now!" Fortunately, I received the attached picture telling me I was a "Natural Born CEO". Well the whole purpose of this posting was to tell you about Intuit's new initiative for startup companies. You can download their free Simple Start ......
