Microsoft SAT 2004 Karachi, Notes from the Day

Microsoft Software Architect Tour Karachi went away quite well. Although the event started a little later then 9:30 but the 150 seated auditorium was jam packed as we entered to take to our seats, Gurkan Sulk, Vaqar Khasmani, Haseeb (the Winqual Guys) represented Microsoft from MEA, Pakistan and USA while I from INETA Pakistan and Khurram from Kalsoft were the local speakers there.

I also met Jawad Rehman the Microsoft’s country manager for Pakistan and Dr. Wahab (former IBA chief) and had very interesting conversations on history, Pakistan and their polices and outlooks before the event started and in the lunch break.

The day was long and I got a headache in the end but I am was really pleased to be offered sponsorship of a venue by the kind MAJU people and the general reaction of the 150+ attendees to bring in the developer community revolution in Pakistan. My speech was in fact accepted quite well by all the senior architects and members. In the end 15 lucky people got Microsoft goody bags and all the speakers got bouquets of flowers and table clocks from MAJU as a token of appreciation for being there and all participants got the SAT 2004 trapper keeper with printouts of all the slides.

There was a lot of still photography and also a video recording of the event. I will get some pictures up as soon as I get my hands on them.

The Lahore and Islamabad events to happen on the 3rd and 4th of April are completely booked and Microsoft is planning to fly in speakers from Belgium. While INETA Pakistan is using the services of our User Group Leaders Misbah and Yawar to make there speeches.

Dear Ali:

Thank you for taking out time and adding your comments, but I believe in what I am doing. I am not a very good student but not a bad one either, you know this my second turn at User Groups, the one I had before was with Cold Fusion one backed by Allaire in 1999 and guess what I was offered jobs, good paying ones just to excel in Cold Fusion and this not a brag but I saw people with BCS degree being turned away for me then. Education is most important and with it is all the knowledge and experience you can hold on to but this is the life we have chosen. Right now I am focused on technology and in a few years I will move on the hierarchy but I need people who share my interest and that’s what's in for. Just as you took the time to find my blog.

I agree with you that the content at the seminar was not what you would expect at architect level, I believe you can find better stuff at lots of places like the Architecture center and the Building Block and tons of other books but I want to change all that I want you to talk about all your problems on this forum not merely the ones concerned with .NET. Tell me you needed a blog to express and share what you have learned

You see the topic you have defined above are important but have more to do with management then with development.

Lastly I would like to add that was at your blog like a few weeks back and found it very informative. I really appreciate how you are communicating your message across, I wish I could have met you at the event we could have had a discussion.

Rai, I was at the event too and I find this Ali Shah person as a complete loser in life, don't take his comments to your heart.

I think I know these kind of people. The ones who are selfish isolated and filled with vested interests.

Keep up the good work.

Dear Rai, Thanks for taking this in a positive spirit. It's easy to use harsh words and call others by names but it's difficult to be a man enough to understand other's view-point. I would just discuss a few things:

First of all, you are an asset. So is everyone else...even the kids who run in the streets and have never seen the premises of a school. But there are very few people who go an extra mile. It's good for Pakistan to have people like you - who have some extra quanta of energy. But where you use that energy is important.

On the other hand, there are things that glitter but aren't gold. INETA isn't like ACM and IEEE. The former is related to a product and the later are related to computers and engineering. How does a user group for Samsung M55 mobile-set sound? Would you compare such a UG to a community for Mobile and handheld devices? Certainly not. The former is a fad that even the inventor might disown within a few years.

In this world, there is "content" and there is "presentation." Some people run after presentation and forget the content all-together. And there are others who create content without making it presentable. The beauty lies in a balance. "Content" is the king...there is no doubt about it. What has damaged Pakistan IT more than anything else is "hype in this industry." As Agent Smith says, "..Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception..."

Just consider all this as an opinion of somebody with a little bit of more experience, to which you may or may not agree. I understand, at your age, having a job offer is one of the most accomplished things. But I believe you have more potential than that!

And no, I don't think that I should take over the chair from you :) I know Arslan too...I have talked to him a couple of times. He used to be in Clickmarks and is now in Korea for higher studies. He has a very impressive profile.

Lastly, I know you would be interested in disucssing it further but my current commitments don't let me devote enough time to such activities. Wishing you the best...

<Ali/>

Rai, whether you agree with someone or not, but these words must be highlighted and taken care of. You wouldn't find many men telling you this:
INETA isn't like ACM and IEEE. The former is related to a product and the later are related to computers and engineering. How does a user group for Samsung M55 mobile-set sound? Would you compare such a UG to a community for Mobile and handheld devices? Certainly not. The former is a fad that even the inventor might disown within a few years. Muhammad Ali Shah.
And I would hopefully pray for Hamza Yousaf as well :)

Ejaz you see INETA is all about .NET and Microsoft, I have taken the initiative to get that part of the computer industry to the people and form UG's on this specific focus. I think if every one does his little part its going to add up to the whole lot. Besides I did mention that we are like IEEE and ACM but with a focused area of interest in my post...

I think there are only three forces in the software world right now Microsoft, Open Source and Independent Vendors... Going with one would be a very good choice for the future. I have choosen Microsoft.

# re: Microsoft SAT 2004 Karachi, Notes from the Day

Well, I have no problem at all admitting your passions for .NET or any such technology after our last phone talk. It's your passion and passion knows hardly any reason. So, even if we can't afford such big software applications backed by MS based products, even if more than half of web servers being exploited for one or another reason are based on MS products or even if Microsoft is no longer interested to back its over-ambitious Web Services and hopefully .NET would transform into something new soon and this should end here too. I know this person Muhammad Ali not but I do acknowledge his observations and strongly agree too. And it's just fine with anyone who wants to focus on Tools or Technology. Even though, tools too keep evolving in the form of updates and versions, the ever increasing A.I and adaptive systems being ubiquitous, the role of Tools and those using them is changing like never before. And I think dot com bubble burst gave us great lessons (though, it hardly affected us as much as it did to west). Innovation can't alone be the arena of Techies anymore. Even if Sergey Brinn and Larry Page have no formal management degrees, they had to study and take endless lectures from fellow friends and finally call in Eric Schmidt. So, someone's got to take care of technology too just like tools. And no one is asking you to stop your endeavours, which should be commendable. Let's hope your efforts bring some benefit to this country too.
As for ACM and IEEE, I can't personally say anything. You can probably say that your UG and their organizations are same because you might have seen ACM's professional chapter's proceedings and record being held with SZABIST. Good luck for your future presentations, studies and career.
