Geekette's Blogette Trying to keep up with technology

With the recent massive toy recall, I wondered how I was supposed to keep up with the ever growing list.  It's not so hard to remember Thomas Train toys right now, but what about 6 months from now?  What about all the other toys that have been recalled and not been in the headlines?  What about items other than toys that were probably only seen in fine print on the inside pages of a newspaper I never read?

I stumbled across the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s database located here.  I browsed through the database a few minutes.  There are A LOT of items there!  I clicked the link for Household products.  15 minutes later, the list was still downloading!!!  Did you know the following have been recalled?

  • Sweaters (fire hazard)
  • Glassware (Laceration hazard)
  • DVD Remote Controls (Burn hazard)
  • Film cameras (overheating)
  • Eyelash curlers (breaking handles cause eye injuries)

So far my favorite is under Specialty Products.  The recall of :

  • Safety Kit (The products have a flashlight that relies on a powerful magnet and copper coil for manual recharging. The magnet adversely affects the polarity of the compass rendering it unreliable. The magnet could be powerful enough to disrupt a heart patient's Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD). The product's packaging lacks appropriate warning information.)

How am I supposed to stay safe?

  • Perhaps I need to create a database of all the products I own and then do a search against the Consumer Product Safety Commission's database as a scheduled maintenance item.
