Running WSS 2.0, IE 7, Office 2003 AND Groove 2007 - recently IE 7 crashes everytime I try to open an Office document. PDF documents open just fine. The error was:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Googled and tried several suggestions that did not correct the problem, including remove the Office Tools - Windows SharePoint Services Support (under the advanced add/remove for Office2003).

This worked from Microsoft MVP post - Outlook by the Sound (Paul Hollis) Guess it was due to having installed Groove 2007. Even after deleting the owssupp.dll - Groove 2007 continued to work

The problem happens when you have, or had, two versions of office installed. You have to go into your program files directory and delete the version of owssupp.dll you're not using (for example if you upgraded to office 2007 and then downgraded back to office 2003 you delete owssupp.dll in the office12 directory). IE 7's manage addons you can see two versions of the owssupp dll registered so IE gets confused and you have to forcefully remove the version you're not using anymore.

Some additional information from Microsoft (KB 833714) can be found here

This also fixed my problem. I actually renamed the file from the Office 12 directory and it now loads.

THANK for sharing the fix.

I guess I spoke too soon... It did prevent the CRASH and now I can OPEN in read-only, but when I try to EDIT the doc I get the message about needing a compatible program to edit. I am on Office2007. I tried re-installing the Sharepoint tools and even deleting the ows file and repairing but that did not work...

I've been working on a different problem in Word 2007 - the mouse was not working within a Word document. (I updated to Word 2007 considerably later than when I installed Groove 2007). I too was having problems with being able to Edit a Word document within Sharepoint. When I corrected the problems with AddIns, I was able to Edit within Sharepoint. Hope it helps!
See my posts on July 30 & 31.

ditto on the problem...
Can read now, but can't edit.
Robin, will you clarify what you mean by "corrected the problems with AddIns"?
Thanks!

There are two issues going on this entry.
I have done two "fixes" to correct some problems I was experiencing in SharePoint.

1. IE was crashing when opening an Office document from a SharePoint Document library. That was fixed when I followed the steps in this blog entry (program files directory and delete the version of owssupp.dll - see the original entry)

2. Once I installed the remaining Office 2007 products, I was unable to get the mouse to respond WITHIN the Word document (see my posts on 7/30 and 7/31). This was corrected working with Word Addins (mine happened to be LaserFiche - and I used the LaserFiche hotfix). I didn't realize at the time, it was also impacting my SharePoint Document Library office documents (hence the separate blog entry). When I corrected this problem with Word, my "new" problems within Sharepoint were corrected also.

What are you experiencing and what have you tried?

This was very useful - thank you. I am using Office 2003 mainly, but have some bits of 2007 (SharePoint Designer) loaded. I have OWSSUPP.dll files in office11 and office12 directories, but fixed the problem by disabling an add-on within IE7. There are two add-ons listed (although I can find others that also refer to the same dll file), and the one that I disabled was called Sharepoint Open Documents. The one I needed to leave enabled was called Stssync Handler.
This gives me the expected office 2003 behaviour when I open a word document. I guess if you are using Word 2007 you may need to do something different.

Nice find, I ran into this problem today and was stoked to find some guidance on this post. I moved the OWSSUPP.dll to a temporary directory, IE was slow loading the doc, tinkered with addons to make sure the Office12 one was disabled (love how it does not give you the path of the dll /vomit). Anyhow seems to be ok now, I can open a shared document from the intranet, and save it back (plus check in/check out). Thanks guys for the info.

I know this is a lame suggestion but....this works fine in Firefox. My IE crashes every time but Firefox opens the document like a charm.

I have the 2003 suite, but Designer 2007. I had the problem where IE would crash when I tried to open documents. I also noticed that my datasheet views, unlike people who did not have Designer 2007, and just had the 2003 suite, was an Access data view. Disabling the SharePoint Open Documents add-on worked to fixed the crashing problem. I did notice, however, that the datasheet views are now regular datasheet views, the behavior expected when one does not have the 2007 apps.

Running Office 2003 and Designer 2007, but IE 6. Can't find the addon (Sharepoint Open Documents) you all refer to. Am I missing something?

We are running into a similar problem. I have office 2003 loaded on my xp pro workstation but I do not have any of the office 2007 components installed (even designer). I do have the patch that allows me to open docx files.

The solutions mentioned above did not help me.

I do see a bunch of occurrences of owssupp.dll in my IE add-ons control panel, but disabling them did not help.

A co-worker has uninstalled office 2003 and installed as a fresh install office 2007 ultimate, and is experiencing the same problems.

Is there any solution to this?

I am using Micrsoft Office 2007 Professional and access our SharePoint Site.

When we try to open any document the IE crashes. I do not have Office Groove[Should be a part of Office Ultimate].

So can any help in solving this problem.

Thanks

Though I run Office XP, my laptop came with Office 2007 pre-loaded (but never activated by me). I changed the name of the OWSSUPP.DLL to OWSUPP.OLD as suggested by janet and the problem was immediately fixed. No need to do the regsvr32 recommended by MSFT; no need to change the Office XP installed components; no need to change IE7 add ons.

I use both Sharepoint Designer & Expression web with Office 2003 ... the above office hot fix did the trick and fixed some other issues to boot.

The fix of renaming the OWSSUPP.dll file in the office 12 folder worked a treat. This dll was installed, not as part of office 2007 but as part of project 2007. After renaming the one in the office 12 folder, we were still able to use project and visio 2007. Many thanks

Hi guys, thanks so much for your expertise here. Deleting the OWSSUPP.dll file in the Office12 folder also worked for me.

Thanks! Worked like a charm.

Have Office 2003 and Project 2007, and Sharepoint 2.0 on SBS 2003. After installing an update to Project 2007 via WSUS, could not open companyweb documents.

Renaming owssupp.dll to owssupp.old in program files/microsoft office/office 12/ did the trick.

Can now access companyweb files again.

The Microsoft hotfix worked fine for me. I'm using Project 2007 but also Office 2003.

I am using a fresh install on Office 2007 but I was using Front Page 2003 and Visio 2003.

Once I uninstalled those, I was able to open Office docs in SharePoint!

Thanks SO much!

Hello,
I had Office 2003 + Visio 2007 and I could not edit documents from Sharepoint. Renaming DLLs did not help but the fix from MS did! It's working perfectly now :-)
Cheers,
Michel

I have IE7 and I was having the same issue. Your solution has helped me to edit documents on the sharepoint. However On the Same window I am able to open the Office file on only first tab. If I open the sharepoint on the second tab and any office file again I am getting the same error and then abruptly closes the entire window.

Please help.

I had the same issue but found the Built-in Office Diagnostics fixed the problem for me.
