A friend of mine keep think the Orcas bits he downloaded corrupted and keep blaming Microsoft for putting the corrupt files because he can’t install it on his machine. I wanted to share. Just in case you have the same problem. For me, I’ll take it as a lesson. The next time I download any pre-release or RTM bits. I will make sure I download the correct one. Here’s my respond:
Are you sure you were downloaded the correct files?
It happened to me last time. It seems that the .rar file I downloaded corrupted. But I have mixed those files with different released. do you get what I mean?
They have released 4 different set of files to be downloaded:

1. VSTS with VPC image

2. VSTS with TFS with VPC image

3. VSTS self-extracting

4. VSTS with TFS self-extracting

What I cam suggest to you is to check your files name. Look at its name convention. The file name is different between each other. I got noticed I've mixed the wrong files when I saw differences in its naming convention. Hope this helps.

Do you have rules and standard in your life? I mean in what
you do daily. There must be rules and standard right? For example, I don't
smoking and I can't because that is my rules for better my health, and better
money savings. My boss just email all of us here at Monster
Technologies Malaysia recommendations and standards for our ajax implemetation. It
reminds me about my all time favorite reference at http://www.ssw.com.au/ssw/Standards/Default.aspx.
They have a long list on Rules to Better...(web, winform, project management
etc.). And the list keep expanding since few months ago. One of my favourite is
on Rules to Better Windows Forms project. Of course it should not be a standard
for our development team. But at least we get some ideas on what we should do
to improve our application. Opps. It is not just about application development stuffs,
it is all about software. From management stuff to marketing to third party
tools. I can just say that it is freaking awesome.

Update on the Orcas March CTP: I still haven't finished to get all the bits
from Microsoft download site.

I just moved to a new house I rent at Serdang (30 minutes drive from KL). and
I'm rely on my 3G connection with my Sony Ericsson K600i phone to connect to
the internet, the speed is around 300kbs I think. And the download speed is
just about 20kbps. I'm looking for any wifi spot with good internet
connection around cyberjaya. I still could not find any good spot. The good one
I know is seems impossible for me to go there because of the tight security
expecially if I want to bring my notebook after office hour or on the weekend.
What would you do this weekend? I have a very tight schedule this weekend. I
love to attend 'kenduri' (wedding ceremony).

Just in case if you're somewhere outside the earth,
Microsoft has released the Orcas March CTP Release, which can be found at :

You better spend some time to look at this release, since they provides huge
improvement on the IDE, namespaces and classes. They provide a long list of
highlight in this release in the download page. And it helps a lot. At least
you know what is being offered in this release.

Have you checked theserverside.com(TSS)
recently. They have published LINQ/C# Learning Guide. Thanks to TSS
folks for providing extensive learning guide towards LINQ. I guess it
the only thing that people know in C# 3.5.
Check this out - http://www.theserverside.net/tt/articles/showarticle.tss?id=CsharpLINQLearningGuide2007
Also, integration between CardSpace and Open ID has gain tramendous attention when announced at RSA Conference.
You can find details information about Open ID at it website http://openid.net/ and CardSpace http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CardSpace
Why I posted full link here? because I hope that I will gain more
attention to my readers and of course for me also. I might refer back
to these later.
Open ID claimed:

"OpenID is an open, decentralized, free framework for user-centric
digital identity."

Without the integration with CardSpace, it is not, and vice versa. And it also state that:

"Nobody should own this. Nobody's planning on making any money from
this. The goal is to release every part of this under the most
liberal licenses possible, so there's no money or licensing or
registering required to play. It benefits the community as a whole if
something like this exists, and we're all a part of the community."

To me it is a good idea. But sometimes, people might ask, can it
be trusted? Since it is owned by nobody, so who will take care of it?
There must be answer for it. Just like public property, if nobody take
care of it. It will not survive for itself.

Orcas - my first look

This post was significantly written targeted for developers with
passionate curiosity. I love passion. That makes what I am. I've read Scott Guthrie's blog
last night and I found that it was really interesting post on Orcas.
Orcas is the code name for the next release of Visual Studio. I think
they will probably release it this year, since as far as I know, most
of Microsoft product iteration release in 2 years. Visual Studio 2005
shipped in November 2005. Perhaps you can guess when is the shipping
date of Orcas. What's in Scott's blog that I found so interesting? its
no other than Orcas review. It's a very high level review for
developers, he did wrote a few killer features that will beat other
IDE, despite there are no other IDE more better than Visual Studio :p.
Here's are some interesting points to share, but I strongly recommed
you to read the original posting at his blog. Satisfaction guarantee.

Multi Targeting - with
Orcas, developer can write application targeted at multiple platform,
it can be for .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0 and .NET 3.5. He did not mention about
.NET 1.1 and I'm still using .NET 1.1 for my work. and I guess, there
are a lot of people outside there using .NET 1.1 for their daily job.
Like what Scott Hanselman wrote in his blog, technologies changing reapidly than business. I'm not business people. But I do care of it.

Rich HTML/CSS WYSIWYG Designer -
It not just and drop features when he mention about designer. Scott put
a figures of CSS toolbox with their properties and show how easy it is
to format your text or page. Is that really easy?

ASP.NET AJAX and JavaScript
- Intellisense in JavaScript? everybody want it. At first, I thought it
was already there in Visaul Studio 2005 or maybe something we can do or
hack to provide intellisense in JavaScript. It must be hard to write
JavaScript in "notepad". I mean, those script with Object Oriented
Programming principles in mind, classes, methods, enumeration.

Improved Data Support - Everybody talks about LINQ nowaday.
Orcas is the tool. Object relational mapping will be better than ever
with the release of Orcas. Did other third party ORM provider has
provide this capabilities? I don't know. The last time I'm using ORM
framework, I use code generator to write the mapping file. Developers
with hands-on experience with ORM tools like NHibernate or iBatis must
like this feature.

Scott also did mention about Orcas February CTP release. I think they postponed
it until March. Can't wait to get your hands dirty with those beta
stuff huh? Maybe I should focus on other thing first. There's two
things in my mind now, ASP.NET AJAX and .NET 3.0 which I have not
dicover intensively.
Quoted from Scott's blog:

"We are then looking to ship a first Beta
later this spring. I'll be doing many more posts over the next few
months that talk about some of the new features in much more detail."

I like to quote, and the great post
diserve to be quoted. when is the spring? here at malaysia we don't
have spring. Well his blog will be in my top list since he want to
disclose more about Orcas. Should I donwload the next release CTP or
wait until the Beta? I couldn't decide yet. I'll wait for it. I guess
that's all for now.
Well developers, stop writing testimony for your friends on friendster
or myspace. It's time to get your hands 'dirty'. It is Monday, work,
work, work.
Weird error after installing ClickOnce application

I have found this when I tried to install my ClickOnce app on my clean Windows XP VPC.

EventType clr20r3, P1 tpclite.exe, P2 1.0.2446.22540, P3 450639e5, P4 tpclite, P5 1.0.2446.22540, P6 450639e5, P7 d0, P8 e9, P9 system.invalidoperationexception, P10 NIL.

The scary and weird error I ever seen in ClickOnce app. The error occur because of the third party dlls that I forgot to install into GAC. The solution is to create another Bootstraper package and make it as a prequisite.

Tech-Ed SEA 2006 at Kuala Lumpur, I'll be there

Next week I'll be at Tech-Ed 2006 SEA here in Kuala Lumpur from 5-8 September. This is the first time I'm at tech.ed since I missed it in 2004, and it being organized in Singapore last year. As the preparation for the event, I have split up my activities there to attending session and instructor leds lab. There will be series of track conducted by Clemens Vasters and Steve Swartz that i think will be attract most of the people there. Details of the series can be found at

Ed Quek's blog. I remember last time at MSDN Briefing event when Ed give a presentation about smart client development in Visual Studio 2005. He was going too fast, and I think most of the people there cannot follow his pace. Most of the people here are not native English speaker. While Scott Hanselman has a good tip when presenting to non-native English audience and I think that factors has made him as the top rated speaker at Tech-Ed 2003.

Clemens' team has released .NET Framework 3.0 with the WCF bits. I'm sure they are working very hard, and I hope he can spend some time at Tech-Ed here.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=19E21845-F5E3-4387-95FF-66788825C1AF&displaylang=en

They have published Smart Client Software Factory (SCSF). Is the World spinning too fast?

While working in the office on Saturday (suppose I'm going to gym or sleep at this time), I'm being prompted with email from GotDotNet - Smart Client Software Factory (SCSF). They just release the June SCSF. I'm downloading it from http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnpag2/html/scsflp.asp right now. Prior to this released I've downloaded their weekly drop but didn't have the opportunity to explore the weekly drop. I think I'm overloaded, until I don't know which one I should explore, and which are not necessary. Luckily I'm still in my pace, I'm still completed my work on schedule although I need to come to the office on Saturday. I have missed MEDC 2006 last week and still not sure if I can go to Tech-Ed 2006 SEA here in Kuala Lumpur. I'm subscribing to lots of great blogs and it is my daily routine to read it to feed my empty brain. I have unlimited space on my brain and I just need the right tools to feed it ;). I just been adopted to the new team developing smart client application for our loyal client. It such a great experience and advantages to work with the new team and with the same client. They are very passionate about the software we developing for them and make us a bit stressful. It still in the early stage.
