The BUILD Conference
What a week it has been! The BUILD Conference just concluded http://www.buildwindows.com... and there were tons of announcements. This is one of the reasons I am passionate about this company. Even when I was outside Microsoft, the momentum and the focus they have on Developer audience simply amazes me and they continue to do it, years later. Windows Developer Preview BUILD is a developer conference which premiered the first Windows Developer Preview bits. Clearly, the developers ......

Pick that favourite colour using the colour picker in IE 9 Developer Toolbar
One of the tough tasks in web development and in particular CSS styling, is to find the RGB and hexadecimal value of uncommon colours. As a web developer working in CSS, I longed to give that nice blue/green tinge colour for my UI and always struggled with the hexadecimal value. Particularly in finding the same for colours I find in other sites. Thanks to the IE9 Developer Toolbar which has this nice colour picker, one can find the hexadecimal code (and the RGB equivalent) from any web page. To demonstrate, ......

Internet Explorer 9 Beta is out
IE9 Beta is out and available for download from http://www.beautyoftheweb.com The sheer beauty of the above site is felt only after you download IE9 Beta and check it on the same. IE9 has been available as platform preview 1-4 over the last 6 months with a set of packaged demos. But with this release, there is a public installable Beta that works very similar to your IE8. In fact, it replaces the default IE8 browser shipped with Windows 7. For now, all I would like to say is that the experience has ......

Testing for FireFox, Chrome User Agents, using the IE9 Developer Toolbar
IE9 Toolbar’s Browser Mode allows us to test for different versions of IE. This feature has been there right from IE8 Developer Toolbar. But, I always thought that the testing was just limited to the different versions of IE i.e. IE7, IE8 and IE9. One of the advantages of having a technical boss is that, he points to the right set of information when needed. @harishV pointed out that you can test even for other browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari from within the IE9 Developer Toolbar. For the ......

Formatting minified jQuery, JavaScript using the Internet Explorer 9 Developer Toolbar
Much has been talked about the F12 developer toolbar in IE and the support it provides for web developers. Starting IE8, the Developer Toolbar is a menu item that helps you view the page source, scripts, profiling and many other details of the rendered page. It even allows script debugging from within and that makes it a truly powerful web developer tool bar. With IE9, the developer toolbar got even better with the Networking Tab that allows you to inspect the traffic/time taken and drill down into ......

Playing HTML5 Video with fall back for IE8/IE7 and earlier versions of other browsers using Silverlight
One of the popular HTML5 tags is the video tag. The ability to play videos without depending on a plugin is something that excites web developers to a great extent and no wonder you end up seeing video demos in all HTML5 conferences. Now, coming to HTML5 Video, the tag itself is simply <video id=”ID” src=”FILENAME.mp4/ogv/webm” > in the simplest form. This also means that the video needs to be H.256 encoded MP4 format or some of the other formats as mentioned above. For a detailed specification ......

ASP.NET Session State shared between IE Tabs and IE8
One of the common problems reported with tabbed browsing in Internet Explorer is that the session state is shared between the tabs. Sample scenario below:- 1. User A opens an IE instance and logs into a website where a session is created. 2. User A opens another tab and tries to access the same website. Without logging in, the user is already inside the session. 3. In this case, its clear that the session is shared between the tabs. Problems with this behavior User retrieves a particular record in ......
