I had to travel recently and the "security" person at the strip search line in the airport literally said, "Papers, Please." What? Please tell me you didn't just say that! I can't travel in the United States without proper papers?
I also read this article today and wasn't very happy. Why aren't we up in arms about a proposal to search every bit of text that goes over the Internet and monitor it for what the government deems harmful?
Do we as an American people realize how much freedom we've given up to the government? The founding fathers never intended for the federal government to have this much control over our lives. In fact, much of the constitution is there to PROTECT us from the government. Many people don't realize that all rights not explicitly given to the government by the constitution and the bill of rights are explicitly denied to the government. Most people think that the constitution and bill of rights are there to define what rights we as the people have, but that's backwards, and I think that's a primary reason why we have allowed the government so much power.
My hope for this country is waning. Every day we become more like the very controlling regimes of old, and the current crop of candidates will do nothing to change that, only make it worse. I just can't escape the thought that we're all really hosed.
