Mythical Man Month hits Apple

It's not just Microsoft that has delays.  If this had been Microsoft telling people that they'd decided to pull developers off to work on the IPhone, you'd have heard about how evil MS is and how they are never going to release and how typical this is, blah, blah, blah.

You'd also hear about how they had released a vaporware product with the IPhone and how they should be sued for publishing a product before it was ready.

So, my question is, how much of the IPhone presentation was smoke and mirrors?  How close will the final product come to working like Job's demonstrated?  Why do they need more developers?  Shouldn't they already be done and worrying about distribution with only a month left to go?

I'm betting the Mythical Man Month will hit them and the IPhone will be late.  Sounds like Leopard is pretty buggy too . . . better wait for service pack 1.

You're right about this. There is a double standard. Apple drops the ball and no one blasts them about it. Of course, neither company should be dropping the ball at all.

Oh alright....I waste some of my time by acknowledging this post. I'll just spout a couple of random thoughts....

It is interesting that while putting resources on the iPhone would be a legitimate justification for a delay in Leopard, most analysts actually believe that there is more to it than that. Several have speculated that the real reason is that Apple is finishing up some yet-to-be-announced secret features that will be released in Leopard. Hmm... now isn't it interesting that Apple has a reputation for actually releasing MORE than customers expect. Contrasting this with the Windows Vista release is almost comical -- Vista was years late, halfway rewritten part way through the project, and kept having features removed to the point where what actually shipped was far less than originally advertised. WinFS anyone? The thought of putting resources on the iPhone is also interesting in that they are working on something that is actually *new* and innovative. Perhaps this problem bit Vista too and we just don't hear about it....maybe key resources were pulled off to work on the revolutionary copycat product called Zune. What happened to that engineering marvel anyway? Of course it would just be embarrassing to admit that because both products turned out to be far less than the market expected.

So whine away if you will about something that is really a silly comparison. I find it interesting that you bother to spend your time trying to incite debate over something that you supposedly care nothing about. If you somehow feel better about your closed-minded view by blathering on about things you know so little about, may I make one more suggestion -- at least try to hide your ignorance by getting your terminology right! We're a bit more optimistic that operating system updates aren't actually just an attempt to "service" the hundreds of items that couldn't be finished in time for a decade long release so the "service pack" phrase is pretty foreign from over here.

I don't think the post was mentioned Vista specifically or made a direct comparison between Vista and 'Leapord'. The post stated that Apple does have delays in releasing products but get a pass from the tech media that Microsoft does not get.
