Buying from Dell

So I need a laptop for my new company (and before you ask, I really do NEED a laptop), and having purchased stuff from Dell before, I've been very happy.

I jump online and configure the system that I'll need and place the order, knowing that I probably should have called in to order.  Why should I have called in?

I've found that if you talk to a sales person at Dell, you can usually get stuff for cheaper than ordering from their website.

Luckily for me, I used a debit card that the order failed because of my daily spending limits.  Rather than try and get my bank to allow it, I called up a sales rep, gave him the order number, and he configured a new system to match and was $91 cheaper than the web order!  He also canceled the old order and made sure I'd get the laptop by the 28th.

I wonder why they have this phenomenon.  Is it just an update lag on their website?  Whatever it is, I'm happy that I had to call.

I've been told that you get it shipped much faster if you order over the phone instead of online... It boggles the mind why that would be the case.

Yeah, I've experienced the same thing. I've had them tell me that it would be up to 10 days, and then had it arrive 2 days later. They especially seem to exhibit this behavior in their 4th fiscal quarter (which they're in now).

Does this apply only to businesses, or can the random person off the street order by phone and get a discount?

Hmm--good question. I've only ordered for business, so I don't know.
