What's Wrong With Gmail?

It's been a long time since I last posted, I have been really bad lately I know. Work, life, changes on the horizon. You know how it is...

Every once in a while for the past two years I have been getting comments about Gmail problems which I wrote about in the past. However, in the past few weeks I have been getting hammered with comments and mail concerning Gmail. It seems like people are having connectivity problems that last for days(!) and it's not only affecting overseas users but lots of people in the U.S. as well.

This is crazy in my opinion. People really do depend on Gmail for all sorts of business and personal communications. I know in the past I've replied to comments with things like "it's a Beta, what do you expect" but to be in Beta for three years and still have these kind of outages? I mean come on people! If this was Microsoft, you'd never hear the end of it. But that's just the thing. Microsoft has been serving up Hotmail (now MSN Hotmail) for years. Sure there have been some issues, but Hotmail has been much more stable as far as my unscientific polls can tell.

I seriously think that Google needs to take a step back and really fix Gmail and stop hiding behind the Beta badge. As for me.. I think I'll be moving everything over to my Hotmail account once and for all...

Hi, every time i try to open my gmail account, it prompts saying that it's an insecure website and gives you 3 options, to either not continue or continue and risk your computer, and other third one that i know doesn't apply to me

so what's going on? i rely on my gmail account for business and personal use, and it's really inconvinient to have this error for the last 5 hours!!

Hi Masha,

I don't think that it's Gmail giving you that message, that's probably coming from Internet Explorer 7. IE does not like something that about the Gmail site and is raising this warning to you in the case that you might be going to a bad or malicious site.

If you're sure that you are going to Gmail's site and are not being redirected somewhere bad, then it's probably safe to ignore the warning. If you're at all suspicious about it then it's better to make sure you're actually going to Gmail, the address should be http://mail.google.com

I'll tell you what's wrong with gmail:

1. They deleted all my messages from my inbox, so i lost everything, virtually. Yes I looked in all folders, ran a search for the missing messages, did everything i could to find them, aside from nailing flyers to trees and posts in my neighborhood.

2. I contacted gmail (through some long roundabout process that takes you back to the same set of questions until you're ready to throw your computer across the room, easier done if you have a laptop) and guess what? They asked me to change my password. Big help.

3. I changed my password, but the account wouldn't accept it and kept reverting back to the old password. Yes, i followed all the steps, I am not a moron.

4. I posted my queries on the gmail help discussion group and couldn't log in to respond because guess what? My account doesn't even exist anymore. It's gone. Poof! No account with that username exists. That means that i no longer have a gmail address, I cannot access my contacts, and people sending me emails at the gmail address are wondering what the hell happened.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Aside from my accumulated bad karma, that is.

Gmail is the only browser I use for all my day to day work I receive from abroad. What happened to it. Now I am totally confused not knowing how to proceed further. It is the outcome of years of browsing and now all are going to the dustbin. It's is quite unfair to discontinue services just like that without prior notice or warning. shit

This worked for me:
- Log off from a google page that works - google.com has a sign off button at the top right.
- Go to gmail.com.
- It will ask you to sign in. Do so.
- Cross your fingers and say "work for me too! work for me too!"

This has been happening for the past 2 days, and has occured randomly over the past two years or so since I joined Gmail. Why is this always happening. I have some very important emails that I need to open. As a result, I've opened a netscape account.

**new version of Gmail available for Firefox2 only thats why you need to download to your computer.

1.download Mozilla Firefox2, go to www.mozilla.org/products

2.download one of the program they provide then all ur problem will be gone. it work for me eventually!!

In the last a couple of weeks, I keep getting this error message when send mail. "Oops... a server error occurred and your email was not sent. (#008)". Also the speed is very slow too. Not sure, they are improve the gmail or just make things worse.

Gmail is AWFUL lately!!! It is my mail email and I have not been able to access the page at all this morning or yesterday morning for several hours!!! WHAT is going on?

Even AOL is loading right away, and the infamous "gmail" will not even direct me to the login page!! Brand new computer, no virus's, perfect internet connection...Im very annoyed!

For the past few days, Gmail has been almost crashing for me. And it is happening on both my work computer and my home computer. New messages do not automatically show up in my inbox and many times now, I've had to close the page and reopen another to send or even open up emails. The page will also not refresh. I keep getting a "still working" message at the top of the page and I eventually get tired of waiting and have to close the page.

Is anyone else experiencing this? What is the problem?

My Gmail was also giving trouble, and is fixed now. I just did a soft reset on my broadband router and now gmail is much more responsive. I guess they must have changed a couple of things in the server that confused my router :-)

Ps. Also clear the following:
1. C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp
2. C:\Documents and Settings\Terry\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
3. C:\WINDOWS\Temp
4. C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
5. Delete all "KB files" (windows updates) - these files waste space and is not needed unless you want to uninstall your updates which is highly unlikely...
6. Also run a reg cleaner if you have one
7. You can check for Spyware if you have anti-spyware removal software.
8. Check for disk errors.
9. Now defrag your O/S drive

This should speed up your PC and sort out problems!!!

I FINALLY have figured out what I need to do--in order to access my gmail account. I didn't wanna leave my firewall off, so I went back and enabled it...And fortunately, I'm not having any issues regarding loading the gmail page anymore! Hope it works for you people too!!

Gmail is down again! For the past few hours I've not been able to get it to respond. (I'm in California, but when I set up my account I was living in France, so I have no idea which server my mail is on.

Funny thing, though -- I can pick up my gmail through my cell phone, and also through iGoogle. The only problem with iGoogle is that I can't do spell check, italicize, change fonts, etc. But it's 20 times better than nothing.

Is anyone else having the same problem?

[With I.E.8] About 3 days ago I switched my browser home page to "about blank". Gmail now opens fast again as well as all functions. Haven't seen a "oops #103" since. Have my fingers crossed though. Maybe Google wants to remain the homepage king but that's just too bad.

Google has a lot to answer for. Everyone who has been having problems with gmail should report to their local consumers affairs office. Really when you think about all the millions of ads they put through your gmail portal then they owe their email clients the respect they deserve. They dont have any support in palce although they say they do but all the support in their Q&A only covers topics that doesnt help with the real problems.

Gmail is malfunctioning in that it constantly changes my fonts from large size Georgia to a small size bold Garamond. It only happens when I'm replying to someone email.
This started to happen after I put quotes in small bold Garamond in my signature. Ever since I changed it back to large sized Georgia fonts - after a few sentences, it automatically reverts to the bold Garamond fonts. DRIVES ME NUTS!
I can't figure out how to reconfigure to stop this auto-switching. Hints anyone?

Two problems
for the past few days its a gamble whether i get the connectivity or not; i would slog the whole nite and the morning will be ok; while i am working, if for some reason i quit, i cant connect;
second; i get a message " your computer is sending automated mesages; please confirm that you are human.
i have to decipher some hieroglaphics( i am 69 and dont have a sharp vision to deal with those) and type in, three times, noless;why are we being tortured like this' feel like migrating to hotmail or yahoomail
oh, one more; gmail organises all your mail in a single thread; if we want to delete just one of those, its impossible; the whole lot gets deleted;
