For the past few days we've been getting the following error on our machines at home:

Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.

A quick search lead me to this post by Paul Wu regarding the Windows Defender error. It turns out that Windows Defender is out of Beta and a new version is available. Simply follow the instructions on Paul's post and install the new version of Windows Defender and you're golden.

I agree with Paul, this was a terrible error message. The whole point of Windows Defender is to make it easy for home users to protect their machines without having to bog down in administrative tasks. Most home users could not care less what a service is, let alone how to figure out why this particular service is now failing.

Anyway, it's easy enough to fix, once you know what the issue is.

Thanks Paul!

Margaret/Kannan,

If you read the entire post above, the instructions to fix this issue are right there. Basically, click on the link to install the new version, follow the instructions and it will fix your problem.

Good luck.

Does this problem affect internet access? I can get Outlook emails but my Firefox browser is acting wacky. My Google searches time-out. Is there any connection here?

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 2/1/2007 7:38 AM Peter
Hi Jason,

This issue should not affect your internet access. Defender is only really a spyware scanner. Unless in the time that it has been failing you somehow managed to pick up some spyware which is now causing your system to act funny. I guess that's possible.

The first step you should take is to follw the links in the post above and install the newest version of Defender. Once that's done, run a complete scan and see if it picks anything up. If not then you'd have to drill down to the problem further, but that should at least eliminate the spyware angle.

BTW, you should always have a firewall running (XP Service Pack 2 has one by default) and scan for viruses every once in a while.

Good luck!

If coincidentally am without internet access, how do I follow the instructions on Paul's post and install the new version of Windows Defender? I don't know if the Windows Defender error is blocking my internet access, but I suddenly have no internet access.

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 2/4/2007 12:02 PM clyde
I am sending this from my computer. It's my wife's computer that is experiencing the Windows Defender error and is without internet access.

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 2/4/2007 2:13 PM Peter
Hi Clyde,

That was the first thing I thought. If you're without internet access, how are you seeing my blog?

Anyways, what you can probably do is follow the "install the new version of Windows Defender" link above using your wife's computer. You will need to validate that Windows is genuine by clicking on the "Continue" button. Once that is done, click on the "Download" button and save the .msi file somewhere on your wife's computer.

Transfer this file to the computer which is having the issue and run it there. It should install the updated version on that machine.

I don't know if this will fix yuor connection problem however, but it's worth a shot...

The big problem with Windows 2000 and defender is the program will not uninstall. The only way I was able to stop the annoying "0x800106ba error" was to delete c:\program files\window defender\msascui.exe but the program is still there and I don't want to mess up registry so there it will stay until I upgrade.

Paul's original post is up there in the link called "Windows Defender error". He basically points you to the information in the page I link to about installing the newest version of Defender.

Hope that helps,
Peter

I am getting that annoying "Windows Defender error" that a problem caused it to stop. When I restart, I still get that messge. How do I start this service manuually?

Thank you,

Cinsy

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 5/9/2007 1:18 AM Peter
Hi Cindy,

The best way to resolve this issue is to click on the "newest version of Windows Defender" link in the original post and update to the newest version. This way the service is still running (which is what you want to happen) but you don't get any more error messages.

I'm not sure about the services since I no longer have Defender on my machine, I am now running Windows Live OneCare, which is really good except for one nagging problem I will be blogging about soon.

If you REALLY just want try to find the the service to run manually, try the following:
Note: You need administrator rights on the machine to do this.
1. Click on Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services.
2. Scroll down the list and look for Windows Defender.

If it is in the list it will probably have the Startup Type set to Automatic. In order to change it:
1. Right click on the service and select properties from the pop up menu.
2. Change the startup type to Manual.

Next time you reboot, the service will only start up if you go into services and start it.

Just to recap, I don't recommend you do the above, it's better to just upgrade to the newest version of Defender.

I can't bypass Windows Defender Service when I boot up my computer. It is completely frozen. How do I bypass Windows Defender or open in a safe mode to use Windows?

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 5/24/2007 10:32 PM Peter
Hi Rachel,

Most computer systems allow you to boot in safe mode if you hit F8 (or sometimes another Function Key) when you first boot up. Give this a try. Once you log in, you can install the newer version of Windows Defender, which I link to above.

That should take care of the issue and allow you to log in as normal.

0x800106ba. what does this mean & what do I do to fix it? I re started my computer & it still comes up

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 8/20/2007 11:48 AM Peter
Hi Loretta,

It means that you have an old version of Windows Defender installed on your machine and need to upgrade to a newer one (it's free).

Please read the post at the top of the page and click on the link that says "install the new version of Windows Defender".

Follow the steps to install the new version and you should be OK.

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 8/25/2007 2:43 PM Wendy
I've followed the steps that were recommended, however, my computer keeps rebooting (3-4 times) AND I still get the error message.

What else should I do?

# re: Windows Defender Service Failing 9/3/2007 3:07 PM Mike
I already have vista and the latest WD installer tells me it won't reinstall, and of course I can't since it is integrated into Vista so I guess I'm screwed, unless I want to wipe my OS. I would rather wipe my ass... Freakin M$

When I try to install Norton 360 which requires to remove Windows Defender, my beta version of Windows defender can't be removed. The message says "the action is only valid for products that are currently installed". I checked all areas, but I could not manually, entirely remove that beta version even I reinstall new Defender, then uninstall it successfully, but the beta version is still there.

Hello again...
looks like i found the solution for this issue...

CAUSE
This issue may occur if one or more files on the system are not correctly registered.

SOLUTION: remove windows defender then do the following:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll in the Open box, and then click OK two times.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Mssip32.dll in the Open box, and then click OK two times.
3. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Initpki.dll in the Open box, and then click OK two times.

and then reinstall windows defender again..
Cheers!

I have the same annoying problem and for some reason it is not letting my Warcraft game to start. It says "check if cd is in the cd-rom and click retry" but it won't initiate the game. I will try this solution and let you guys know if it worked.
