An interesting story from EW where they found some guy who has apparently living in a hole and who had never seen any of the Star Wars movies. Ever. Anyway, he sits down and watches the Star Wars saga for the first time. The interesting thing is that he watches the movies in the order in which George Lucas says they should be watched, that is, chronologically.

I've thought about this before, and I believe that this is the wrong way to watch the movies. In my opinion they should be viewed in the order which they were made, that is Episodes IV-VI first, and then Episodes I-III. Watching the movies in chronological order (EP I-VI) holds no surprises at all. No "I'm you're father", no Yoda or sister surprise, nothing. even the Emperor comes off a bit lame in Return of the Jedi after you've seen him fight with a lightsaber and him Dooku and throw around force lightning in Episodes II and III.

So, in the future when I introduce my younglings (nothing to report yet... this is not hint-dropping) to Star Wars, I'll be popping in the holographic memory cube (for sure that's what's going to be hot in the future right?) for A New Hope and we'll work our way from there....

P.S. Since we're in the subject of Star Wars, here's neat Photoshop contest from the always amazing Worth1000, it's Star Wars characters based on celebrities.

Hi Peter, I agree on a personal level (no amount of Episodes 1-3 can take away the magic that is/was 4-6), and also as a dad.

"A New Hope" is a real family movie and is just fun - I watched it with my eldest son when he was 4.5. The story is easy to follow and simple, and I-III are all rated PG.

As a contrast, I tried to watch "Phantom Menace" with him months later (after going through the original trilogy) and I kept having to explain what a blockade was and who were the good guys and bad guys. The only bit he was truly excited about was Darth Maul :-)

I'm not ready to follow up with "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" because they're M-rated. I'll stick with the first trilogy for now.

And you're right - on a story level, there's a feeling that we just get to see some cool lead-up to Anakin becoming Darth Vader, and the fall of the galaxy into the Empire in 1-3 (probably this has been over-analyzed elsewhere).

Cheers,

Thomas
